    1. The books were written like bad fanfiction because they WERE bad fanfiction. It was a painful read.
    2. The storyline is an embarrassment on the BDSM community and it's sad that some people are going to think that's what actually happens in these type of relationships. Not the case.
    3. The actors playing Anastasia and Christian aren't nearly as attractive as they were made out to be in the book, so there's that.
    4. If that girl bit her lip or talked about her inner goddess one more time, I probably would've gouged my eyes.
    5. I disliked every single character in the book, especially Anastasia. She was just plain annoying and childish. Nothing sexy about that.
    6. I won't be spending my hard-earned cash to watch this in theaters. I may watch it for free on Netflix in a few months, but I'm not expecting much. I can get hotter erotica for free online.

On the other hand, all of these people (especially here in the south) protesting this film because of the "sexual abuse" and "immoral content" just piss me off. Get over it, people. There are much more damaging things out there. Fifty Shades isn't going to scar anyone for life.

Yes, I agree. I like this kind of reasonable response.

I totally agree with jjblogs...and my 2 cents is...Anne Rice's Beauty books are a thousand times better written and sexier!

I heard a woman say Magic Mike was way better than Fifty Shades of Grey. That speaks volumes...

Not really a fan, though I haven't read the book. I'm really cringey with lovey dovey stuff though (I still block my eyes when people kiss on TV :s ).

My wife won't watch the movie. She read the first book and thought it was like watching a train wreck. She said many parts of it made her angry. But I do recall some parts made her frisky! To each his own.

Yep. Go with Anne Rice Beauty books. Lots of variety there. FYI she writes that series under the name A. N. Roquelaure.
  • I'd rather watch 9½ Weeks with Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke.
  • I read the books and by the 2nd one I was saying to myself "ok, I get it, you like each other. A LOT!" I sadly read the 3rd one that had a glimpse of a plot about 10 pages before it ended. I read the movie spoiler online for it and asked a friend who saw it and it doesn't sound like something I'd be interested in.

No, he takes it out. Why is everyone so put off by this? Weird.

I have not, and will not, see the movie. The book is a horrible misrepresentation of the BDSM community and merely glorifies an abusive relationship. I will not put my hard earned money into supporting such a thing.

    And then there is this....

I'm not knocking anybody wanting to have sex while on their periods. Do it if you must. But having the guy actually take the tampon out for you? Is that supposed to be sexy? To me, and to a lot of others it seems, that crosses a line. My man doesn't wipe my *kitten* when I poop either.

Certainly, the marketplace series by Laura Antoniou is a far, far better fictional account of BDSM than 50 Shades.

    This, this, this, this, this.

I'm so pleased to have had her sign all my books when she was in town. ^_^

Read the books, though poorly written, still enjoyed the story line.
The movie was pretty good, followed the book, showed more than what I thought they would.
It's not mean to be a porn, so if you go to watch it for that purpose you will be disappointed.

Kind of dumb. Sex book, barely even BDSM. If most of the women who read the book knew about actual, hardcore BDSM, they would not be interested in it whatsoever.

I read it back in the day as a fan fiction and almost died when I found out that's what it was. Now you can get rich for writing a Twilight smut piece. What a world.

Well, the film is probably never going to win any Oscars.....but as long as it doesn't promote inequality, non consent or abuse I think it's probably fine....can;t say I'll watch it at the cinema though, maybe if it comes on TV!

It does, in fact, promote non consent and abuse. It is an inaccurate portrayal of a CONSENSUAL BDSM relationship. Don't see it.

This is pretty much the best review of the film I've seen sofar.

    http://www.vox.com/2015/2/14/8038261/50-shades-of-grey-movie-review

"What began as a tale of a young woman falling in love with an older gentleman with kinky tastes has morphed and twisted in the hands of director Sam Taylor-Johnson into a story that involves a young, weather-manipulating woman who falls in love with a teleporting incubus whose greatest weakness is the banal pleasure of contract law."

The books, as I'm sure the movie will to an even lesser extent, have little to nothing to do with the BDSM Lifestyle. It's poorly-written, rough/kinky-sex, candy-sugary-romance and juvenile interactions between characters that aren't realistic. I do understand the 'hollywoodification' and use of formula to entertain readers and to fill seats in theaters but this is just awful.

If you are really interested in the lifestyle, and I can assure you it IS a lifestyle that is complete and fulfilling, then there are far better books on the subject, even fiction that runs circles around this drivel, and many places on line and in real life to educate yourself and find out what you've been missing.

    I approve this message. :)

I have this trilogy, but am struggling to make it through the first book due to the amount of degradation thus far.

^ This. The Sleeping Beauty books were repulsive, content wise, to me, but the quality of the writing was good at least.

Ok, I ran across a blogger that was reviewing the book one chapter at a time. This person is heavily into BDSM, and knowing what I know of it, he's pretty accurate in a lot of his descriptions. The thing that got me was yeah, it started out making fun of it. But halfway through, he commented that it was getting harder and harder to make jokes about it because he found it sad. Apparently, E.L. James got a LOT of things wrong about the location and other odds and ends that probably could've been avoided with a simple Google search. But he said the one thing that she gets consistently right is the description of an abusive relationship. And reading the quotes he pulled out, while I'm sure some are out of context, it's scary to read with that in mind. I'm not saying it's going to influence people all over the place. But calling what looks to me like an abusive relationship normal is very sad and little scary.

And even if you don't believe that or don't see it or don't think it's a big deal, what snippets I've see are just bad writing in general. Even the sex scenes. The Harlequin Romance novels have better writing for the sex scenes!!! Seriously, if you want to read porn, there's lots better out there. Some of it even free!

Now, I'm sure the movie is different. It would have to be, really, otherwise it wouldn't be showable to the general public. But that doesn't make it better. You can put glitter on crap, and it's still crap.

They mean that if women knew about actual hardcore BDSM, they wouldn't be interested in the books.
