What nobody tells you about losing weight

Nobody told me how crazy vanity sizing really is. I guess in the back of my mind I knew, but when you're a size 20 it's hard to believe that vanity sizing is a thing. Now, at 5'4" and 143 lbs, I'm a size 4 in bottoms and a s or xs in shirts. That seems crazy to me because I'm just barely in the healthy BMI range. I still have 10 lbs to go, so I'm anticipating being a 2 and an xs, which can be hard to find in some places. I thought clothes shopping would magically become a breeze once I was in a healthy range. I don't think it's ever a breeze for anyone, really.23

There are love handles in that profile pic???
Right at the bottom; just above the pants.1 -

This!
While heavy I knew exactly what store(s) to go to for my clothes and what size I wore at those stores. Now I don't fit in their clothes anymore and need to go to "regular" stores. Having no idea what size I wear now I recently gathered pants in sizes 14, 16 and 18 (I'm 6ft tall). The 14s swam on me - insanely too big (seriously? I kept double checking the label!). Same was true of the 18s. The 16s fit perfectly, but I know that if i go to a different "regular" store, and try on different manufacturers, I may have to find "my size" all over again. Frustrating, and wastes so much time!
And it especially ticks me off because men's clothes aren't sold like this. I know my husband's inseam, waist, neck circumference and arm length. I can go into any men's department, at any store, and buy clothes for him that fit perfectly. Why can't the same be true for women's clothes?
I really hate shopping... (but also recognize that this is a good problem to have )10 -
That hearing people make comments about other people being fat, or just about someone's weight in general, would make you feel self conscious, because you've always been overweight, and that they have no idea it might make you uncomfortable if they don't know you've lost weight. Not that people should make comments, but it is a weird feeling.20

* How much free time one has . When the main hobby ( eating and couch potatoing !) is no longer available, one has to find new things to do not to feel bored and go back to bad habits.
* How pooping is going to be everyday easy and fantastic
* How long it will actually take to understand that one really lost weight
* How difficult it would be when the gym is closed for vacation19 -

I too find it uncomfortable to be witness to these occasional comments and realise that in the past I had probably been spoken about in that way too and that fatism really does occur sometimes.11 -
A couple of months back, a new acquaintance (who hadn't known me at my heaviest) told me a sexist "fat" joke. In front of his own pre-teen daughter, no less. When I objected, he said, "What? It's not like YOU'RE fat?" I was briefly speechless. But only briefly.
I learned two things:
1) It was an expedient way learn exactly what sort of person he is. Didn't need to waste my time on building a friendship. Moving on.
2) My self-esteem is improving. My gut response was to think less of him and call him out in his BS, not to be ashamed myself for being a target.49 -

Yes! I have gotten so much better at reading people. I can gauge how the would have treated me to how they are treating me now. Not necessarily all people treat thin people better, but a lot do. Those that don't usually do it because they assume I've always been this way and I must just have an easy life or be a certain way because of the way I look. Those have treated me better or talked to me more have been. Most women have treated me the same as before.
And, I've always been comfortable calling people out on their bs but now it's different. I find that people respect it more because generally nowadays I'm more friendly, as I feel better about myself.10 -

Well, excuse TF out of those of us who, after often a lifetime of struggling with our weight, have found something that makes sense and works for us. Heaven forbid that success causes us to get excited about it. Are you really so damn miserable in your own lives that you can't simply be happy for you're own success, if not someone else's, that you have to put down the way they are seeking to achieve THEIR goals? For those who choose to regularly and voluntarily bash Keto...you're right, it is NOT for everybody. Not everyone has the discipline and dedication required to see it through. But, all of that aside I still wish you the best in achieving all of your goals REGARDLESS of which path you've chosen to take....even if you can't see fit to be decent enough to wish others the same.
If people doing it, refer to those who choose not to like that, I am not surprised they get bashed in return.23 -

At least it's a good reason to have to buy new clothes. Although the first time you have to shop in normal sizes vs plus sizes can be a bit overwhelming, so many choices!6 -
The confidence thing still amazes me. I'm not sure if it's the result of weight loss, or the result of getting older, or maybe a combination but I am much more confident than the younger, obese person I was.
Just had to go to a meeting at my daughter's college to discuss some results - my daughter needed a minimum grade in her summer exams in order to continue to the next level and didn't get it. At the meeting, her tutor was patronising and really annoying (bearing in mind that she'd already annoyed me by not responding to my daughter's email requesting an appointment). Anyway, I'm trying to say something and this horrible woman starts talking all over what I'm saying. This is so rude, and so irritating. So I told her to be quiet as I hadn't finished my sentence. She shut up. Then she did it again, so I told her AGAIN. She shut up. The former me wouldn't have done that. But you know what, even though she didn't like it, I'm glad that I told her. She needed telling because she clearly has a really bad habit of not being courteous enough to listen to others, which, in my opinion, is a really bad quality in a teacher.30 -

For some reason, people have started making fun of fat people to me, as if I'm now a part of their club. Even people who know I've lost a lot of weight (like my family). Makes me angry and sad.15 -

I've made comments (usually gently) about the extreme dedication required for keto--though dedication is certainly not the only thing one needs for that way of eating. I've never even attempted keto (I think it would turn me into some kind of food-obsessed monster willing to murder for Twinkies), but I have no issue with people that choose to eat that way for health or diet compliance reasons.
However, many people who are attempting to lose weight have fallen off the wagon many (many, many, many) times. When us CICO subscribers see people like that trying keto for the first time, well...I try to steer them toward something more sustainable, to start. And I think that if someone starts keto, they'll probably have to stay on it forever, or risk the pounds coming back fast.
So while I'm not against keto on its own merits, I am against it being used as a fad diet without understanding the consequences (good and bad) involved. This has to do with the dieting community's general ignorance of different lifestyles and ways of eating that aren't their own, I think.
My two cents.

That you will move your favorite ring from finger to finger to finger and finally buy a ring guard when it is loose on your index finger, but not be willing to part with the ring for even a week to have it permanently resized. Its the ring I got after my son was born - I haven't gone a day without wearing it in his 20 years.
That you will get so irritated when you use calories on something and it turns out blech! I decided to have one of those bite size Reese's cups during a meeting - the bowl was sitting on the table in front of me - so I peel it open, and I want savor that chocolate, peanut buttery goodness. It was STALE!! So irritating! Granted its only 45 calories, but those are MY 45 calories darn it!48 -
That your "keep the belly smaller than the boobs" maxim gets significantly harder to maintain when you lose 70 lbs and finish weaning your 4th baby.18

Or when your body decides that your boobs are going to be the first place you lose fat... seriously, not the thighs or belly!13 -
How much TALLER I feel now that I'm thinner (and I'm 6ft tall, lol)14

Making sure your legs stay crossed in a skirt because you no longer have thighs to block a view up your skirt.
When you forget that you're shrinking and decide to wear a shirt you own because it's really cute! But now if you lean over, because it's loose, cleavages everywhere!!!21 -

Yes! And its so disappointing when you save your calories for a special restaurant meal and it turns out to be not as great as you'd hoped. It may still taste good, but if I want to spend my calories on something like that I want it to be amazing!

Thank you for pointing that out ! I have just checked my legs and I should indeed be cautious !!!!!
