The world is beyond saving and the human race in particular is doomed. I'm actually a little surprised we're still here. So long as I'm here, I will have steak.

    You are my spirit animal.

Fruits and vegetables get smothered in pesticides. cows don't get injected with pesticides. I am more prone to eating the cows every day. But I do not want to stop you vegans from taking over. Go ahead, don't eat meat. The price of steak will make its way down, because there are not enough people eating it. :-)

I am curious how does it impact the environment less?
Also curious as to who was funding the committee as well.

Either a plant dies or an animal dies - either way I'm eating and either way land is needed.

A lot of agricultural land is used for growing animal feed. It takes more resources all around to produce meat (land, fossil fuels, water) over the resources required for plant-based foods. That's the logic behind it.

I don't think the problem is with eating meat in general but in industrial factory farms.

But I'm still going to eat my meat, especially the local stuff. Living in Nebraska has its steak-related perks!

But vegans fart more, and that totally causes global warming. :p

I think the global warming cause is more methane from cow farts (and there a LOT more cows now than there used to be).

    Argument fail...
    [/quote]

so...by THAT logic, eating cows to extinction would therefore save the earth, wouldn't it?

No, because humans mass produce them at an ungodly rate on purpose...factory farming...

I didn't read all of the responses, but I get what you are saying. My sister has been a vegetarian for more than 20 years... and that's one of her main reasons. Her reasoning is that if we just used plants, veggies, etc. to feed people directly instead of using them to feed animials that will then be used to feed humans there would be more resources to feed people worldwide. It's like the animals (cattle, pigs, chickens, etc.) are the "middle men," so to speak. It takes more resources to raise stock than it would if those resources were applied directly to feeding humans.

Great. So we eat more plants, live longer, produce more children and inflict yet more of the most destructive species the world has ever seen on it. That'll be super awesome for the environment!

Alternatively, we could just eat a balanced diet and breed less.

    I agree. That's my ethos.

Eat less. Have gay sex more.

I have no interest in saving the world (and I have protein goals to make) so am I cool to just keep eating meet with wild abandon?

I read an article how feeding the world's population will be with insects since there are so many them.

I'd be more than okay eating insects if they were readily available frozen for human consumption in the us. Heck, I'd be completely on board with making it my primary source of protein if it were cheaper per pound than chicken breast. At this point insects for human consumption are either a grossly overpriced health food or an overpriced a novelty dipped in candy / chocolate. I'd consider raising them for myself if my living situition was different.

Yup. Won't have any impact on the world in any meaningful way, so enjoy.

Eating more plants and living longer has nothing to do with rate of reproduction in the US. Lifespans are rising but birth rates have been falling for years, hitting record lows in 2013.

Nutrition aside, certain meats are part of various cultures. I'd honestly hate to see traditions fail because eating less meat="better environment". Considering all of the other things currently harming the environment, I think there's other things that could be done.

    Logical Fallacies:
Appeal to Antiquity / Tradition - Traditions don't make something right, logical, or good.
Fallacy of relative privation (or what's the other fallacy called- fallacy of causes? uneven causes? when someone cherry-picked which problem they want to address) - Just because there are other things hurting the environment, does not mean that this thing doesn't or doesn't need to be addressed.

Yet our population continues to increase, year after year. Ultimately it's the total number of people and how they live that impacts sustainability. Looking at just birth rates provides a very incomplete picture.

I don't know if i can deal with this this morning.

..yes, our meat eating habits are a major contributing factor to climate change. That's the big one to worry about, for sure. Forget about all of the other, much more damaging factors, here and around the world. Its American meat consumption..... Let's all stop eating the way our bodies were meant to

    That's what I figured.
