Some people crave more high calorie things when they constantly taste sweet stuff, even if it's diet. Some people do better when they don't have sweet drinks all the time. I think it just varies.0

I love my diet Pepsi (and the occasional diet Root Beer or diet Dr Pepper) and have been drinking them for 35+ years . . . . I'm not dead yet. I do limit myself to one (two max) per day and still drink water as much as possible. I've been thin with diet drinks and I've been very heavy with diet drinks - it all came down to how much solid food I was eating though.0

There are no sugars in diet drinks, at least not in the zero calorie drinks. Most artificial sweeteners are GRAS, even the ebil saccharine. There's no really good reason not to drink diet sodas, unless you just don't like the taste of them.0

If something works for you - great - if not then find what does. There wouldn't be thousands of diets if one way worked for everyone. If you want to state what worked or didn't work for you fine - but there's certainly a better way to do that than what I am seeing here.
Jessica asked a question, I provided an answer. She asked why she hears that drinking pop will prevent weight loss. Keep in mind everyone is different and there are long term effects to take into consideration. The incidence of metabolic syndrome is a fact - and you can have it and be thin, so be careful not to fall off the diet wagon - the weight gain will be much worse.
For all of you ingesting chemicals and being so defensive - you do whatever you want. But it doesn't take a genius to know that drinking water is better than drinking pop - or soda or whatever you call it where you live - that is made with chemicals!

If some of you really have to have soda/pop, why not try products made with Stevia? At least Stevia is a zero carb, zero calorie sweetener that comes from a natural Peruvian tea leaf. Unlike aspartame, which is genetically modified bacterial waste.

Because 1) natural is not always good for you and 2) stevia tastes like dirt. And . . . Mercola? Seriously?
My paternal grandmother lived till 97 using saccharine every day, several times a day. My mother is in her mid-70s and she uses artificial sweetener. With the exception of my father, who died at 49 and who did not use artificial sweetener (he died of medication side effects), all of my family members within three generations have died at 85+ years of age or are still alive. With genes like that, I'll take my chances.0 -

Also, "Digging themselves an early grave"? Really? Could you be any more dramatic? I doubt that enjoying a diet soda in moderation as part of an otherwise balanced diet will get me to my grave any faster than I'd be going otherwise. I'm more worried about the bourbon that I'm planning to enjoy this weekend.

Every time I begin to worry about chemicals and stuff... I remember that I'm fat as sheeeesh and probably gonna die from a stroke or a heart attack if I don't lose weight.

It does prevent weight loss because of the chemical artificial sweeteners such as sucralose, acesulfame-K (potassium), saccharin and aspartame. They have zero calories, but the chemicals and the sweet taste with zero calories doesn't trick the brain that you are eating sugar and instead stimulates your appetite so you eat more to make up for the calorie deficit the brain is expecting. It causes you to gain more weight and proportionately more fat and in turn slows your metabolism.
I would suggest a few things. You can put lemon or cucumber slices in your water to flavor it. You an also try sparkling mineral water (Perrier has flavored waters) or using plain and mixing with a little bit of 100% cranberry juice with a touch of stevia. The more you can fall in love with regular water - the better your weight loss.

It will not prevent weight loss, as the calories are negligible. If you enjoy it and it helps you meet your goals, definitely keep drinking it.
Just be sure and care for your teeth!
If you have to take care of one of the hardest parts of your body (teeth), I can't even imagine what it's doing to your soft organs inside your body?0 -

You do understand that there's quite a bit of what we sometimes call "chemistry" happening between the teeth and the organs, right? Acids being neutralized, molecules broken down and rearranged and the like.

I know it's not easy - I was a six-pack-a-day soda drinker (at a minimum).
I quit it entirely and have had nothing but water, black tea, and black coffee since September. I lost 30 pounds in the first month without making ANY other change to my diet/exercise routine.

Not sure if you know or care about the differences between psychological and physical addiction.
I myself having an addictive personality can at least relate a little to compulsive behavior and obsessive tendencies when it comes to eating emotionally.
Besides, caffeine is physically addictive. There are withdrawal symptoms that, while never to be compared to illicit drug physical withdrawal symptoms, can be very troublesome and painful for a day or two. May not be much, but it IS physically addictive.0 -

We can always put it to the test, you drink whatever soda you like, how about 4 cans, and I'll eat 2 apples and 2 cups of strawberries a day, we'll do this for 5 months, take a picture of your teeth and see whose look better. But no brushing, we need to see real results. Hope you have a dental plan.0 -
