What it Looks Like to Weigh Yourself Everyday

I've done a statistical analysis of my own weight loss.
The red dotted line is the average of my weight measurements where they were the most consistent (points 5 to 15)
The two red solid lines are 2 standards deviations either side of the average. Essentially, these depict the spread of expected variation from measurement to measurement. If successive measurements are within these bounds then there is no need to panic and take any action. The measurement was expected.
If any measurement falls outside these bounds ( as mine do - the ones shown in red), then a special circumstance has most certainly made that happen. In my case, a run up to Christmas; drinking heavily and eating cheese!
I hasten to add: these data were obtained by weighing myself on a weekly basis. The interval of weighing does not matter. This statistical approach will still work if you weigh yourself daily.0 -
Very interesting. When I look at that chart, I see a pattern: A period of relatively stable/flat weight, followed by a small spike followed by a BIG drop.
This is similar to the pattern I have seen with my weight loss as well.... more or less flat, significant drop, more or less flat, significant drop, over and over...0 -
I wrote this on my wall a few days ago, and on my facebookpage.
"Weigh ins.. A friend wanted me to discuss this. So I will. What is the best time to weigh in? Once a week, or daily? I believe a daily weigh in is best, every morning. You will see your weight go up and down. You will see how your body reacts to certain types of foods(high sodium/carbs). You will also notice a gain of a few lbs is no big deal, it's natural, it will be gone soon. You will also notice patterns of times you weigh less. For me I would weigh less mid week, heavier earlier in the week. Before I decided to weigh in daily I would weigh myself every monday(worst possible day for me to weigh in). If you weigh yourself one day a week, you might be weighing yourself on your worst possible day... Once you weigh in daily, the only thing that matters is new lows, your lowest number of the week, record that, ignore the rest. Remember It takes 3,500 calories to gain 1lbs of fat. If you have a TDEE of 2,000 calories, to gain 1lbs in 1 day you would have to eat 5,500 calories. If you didn't do it... it's not fat, stop stressing."
What if your gaining consistently even when exercising and eating right? I haven't lost weight in months and have actually gained. I eat pretty healthy. Can't figure out what's going on! I do get that it takes 3500 calories to gain a pound. But I have no idea what I'm doing wrong!0 -
And I weigh every morning0

I weigh myself almost everyday but I only record it when it goes down lol. But I think now I'm going to start recording no matter what again, just because I want the best data.0

I totally agree! I just don't log on here everyday0

I am actually serious. We can retain water sometimes or have more "in the pipeline" than usual, but you can't really get a false low reading if you are using the same reliable scale every time. It is your body weight. You do need to have seen it recently to be able to continue to claim it and then hopefully see it spike lower (while losing) before long. During maintenance I will call the lowest I have seen in the last week my weight.0 -
I weigh every time I get up and record it. Keeps me accountable to what I've eaten the day before so I can record what makes me fluctuate. It's very normal for me to have a different weigh-in each time. I'm only on my first week back in a while, but I lost a lot on Weight Watchers before. I prefer this because of the freedom and the fact that it's free. I noticed that I always lose a lot the first week and that it bottoms out a bit after that, then goes back down.0

I can identify with everything you said. I weigh every day too for the same reasons you do. I cannot chance it that maybe I am gaining and don't even know it for an entire week !!!
I love this site. I have dropped 7.2 lbs so far, just getting started but I know that this is my place to stay until I see 128 on my scale.
That will take me 18 months, but it's encouraging to me that every single week I will be closer to that goal.
I absolutely love my new scale, it shows every .2 that we lose instead of going by half pound segments. And it was inexpensive, found it at Target for under $50.00
Have a good day!0
