What it Looks Like to Weigh Yourself Everyday

I used to only weigh myself every week.. because I was too scared to look and see that my hard work wasn't paying off! Now I weigh myself every day and it keeps me motivated to keep on top of things. But I don't record the changes until I see the same weight for about 3 days0

I've weighed daily for years - just part of my morning routine.
As I follow an IF routine (5:2) my weight fluctuations can be quite extreme, 5lbs in a day or 8lbs in a week.
Knowing my weight doesn't have any emotional attachment or baggage for me, it's just data.
(Hmmm - wonder if I look at it that way as I work in IT?)
I just record my weight on MFP when there's a consistent drift up or down over time but don't bother with fractions of a pound.
Like the previous posts from runners I also weigh just before and just after a long cycle ride to make sure my hydration is about right.0 -
I weigh daily also, I find it less frustrating because I understand the fluctuations.
I check in whenever I hit a new "low weight" as long as the pattern is that it's going down. I realise this might be caused by variations, but it tends to stablise at that weight pretty quickly anyways.
I've been frustrated the last couple of weeks though. Every single day I'm weighing the exact same weight. Not up or down a couple of hundred grams, the exact same. For 2 weeks. I feel like I should definitely have lost, or even fluctuated as is normal, but nope, no change.0 -
I weigh daily but only record on a Monday.0

And you must realize that if you begin building muscle, your numbers may go up... and don't let that discourage you! I think it really depends on your personality! You just have to do what works for you, as an individual! Everyone is different...and I don't really think there is a cut and dry right or wrong way to this!!!
If you are eating at a deficit, you most likely are not building muscles, unless you are new to heavy weight training.
and muscle and fat weigh the same....so its not "muscle" that is making the scale go up ....0 -
Every other time I've tried to lose weight in the past I've weighed myself once a week maximum. If that turned out to be a number I didn't like I would get depressed, binge incessantly and my weight would climb even higher. This time is the longest I've ever kept on track with a "diet" for lack of a better word since changing my lifestyle about 3 months ago with clean eating and exercise. This is also the only time I've weighed myself every single morning. At the beginning I thought doing this might make me even more depressed to see how much I truly fluctuate day to day but it definitely has given me even more motivation! I don't treat the scale as the enemy anymore and don't see it as my only measure of loss. If I weigh more from one day to the next it never angers or upsets me and not once has bingeing even crossed my mind. So I obsess less now than I did when I was weighing in once a week which in my mind seemed impossible
Go you! I completely agree0 -
oooooh! i thought it was bad to weigh yourself every day? i have to hide my scales so i'm not tempted until the end of the week or i wont see the results i want. This is making me rethink since so many are getting better results doing it daily
I think it depends on your personality and what works for you. Maybe give it a try? But this is definitely the best thing for me. You learn a lot about your body and the numbers do not bother me as much since I know there will be a new weigh in tomorrow instead of having to wait another week or more.0 -
I weigh myself everyday(before and after my workout because it is fun to see how much more the scale goes down). I only record every Monday in my log book but I check in with MFP only when I lose weight.0

Hi, so glad I am not the only one who weighs daily. I find it very helpful in keeping me motivated. Although I sort of understand the fluctuations what I can't really get my head round is that one day I appear to be on the downward path and the very next day I will have gained 3 lb. I seem to weigh lowest in mid week and more at weekends - although I don't eat any extra food at weekends.
If the weight has gone up I am usually more careful the following days about drinking enough water and not eating salty foods.0 -
what it looks like.......:grumble: frustrated. Once a week fo me.0
-
I only weigh once per week. If the weight is the same or - yikes - higher, I will be very healthy that day and then maybe weigh myself the next morning, just to see if the other weigh in was a fluctuation/having a bit more food in my stomach.
I think I'd be extremely frustrated weighing every day, as the progress is so little and some days there would be no progress at all.0 -
I have been weighing myself every 3 days. This gives me the opportunity to take a pound off, but I only record it once a week. Good luck reaching your goals.0

I weighed once a week when I lost 120 lbs 10 years ago. Right now, I'm relosing 25+lbs of it but without the scale. I didn't really want to know how much I regained so I'm going by how my clothes fit. I estimate I have 10 lbs left to lose. However, once I reach what I consider my goal, I'm going to weigh daily:) I allowed myself to regain when I stopped weighing daily because the number was climbing. Never going back this time around.0

Good luck in reaching your goal0

I weigh myself once a week, Works perfectly and everything is (hopefully) accurate and (hopefully, lol) stable!!0

I weigh daily and record bi-monthly.0

Very interesting. When I look at that chart, I see a pattern: A period of relatively stable/flat weight, followed by a small spike followed by a BIG drop. That correlates with what other people have reported who are very consistent with their weight loss approach and who don't change their approach even if they don't see results on the scale right away. It takes our body time to adjust, and it likes to make progress in spurts followed by an adjustment period of flat-line.
This is encouraging to me. I see a lot of people doing the right thing but when they don't get results, they give up too soon. Or when they get the spike up (right before the big drop) they give up then. This is a good reminder to me to STICK WITH THE PROGRAM AND NOT GIVE UP JUST SHY OF THE FINISH LINE!!0 -
I weigh every morning and record every friday.
^This. I do this. I will even weigh myself when I get up in the middle of the night to pee. I'm a bit obsessive.0 -
Well, yesterday before my weight workout, I was 165. This morning, I'm 168, so I'm guessing that those 3 lbs are due to water retention for muscle repair. No way in hell did I eat 10,500 calories. lol0

Oh wow thanks Betty! You seem to be right! That is very encouraging.0 -
I just recently learned how to make the image show up in my actual message instead of having to follow the link. I'll try it out. This is the graph that I posted in my original message of the thread:
Hmm.. I cannot seem to get it to work. I just see a broken image. Sorry -- I tried!0 -
I weigh everyday and have been since I have joined MFP. Have gotten used to the fluctuations but
don't like it but know it is going to happen.
If I weigh once a week i tend to get slack and then the pounds start to creep up.
Good Luck with your weight loss journey.0 -

Some people can weigh themselves everyday without driving themselves bonkers. I'm not one of those people. I weigh myself once a week for the sake of my sanity.0

I weigh myself every day, just like I journal and exercise every day. I use it as a tool to track my patterns and stay out of denial. My scale measures weight, % body fat, and % water. I find those last two numbers in relation to the first very helpful. My weight may stay the same, but if my PBF is going down I know I'm on the right track.0

I weigh myself every day and I'm not really bothered with the fluctuations.
There was a week when I lost weight, but gained it back in water weight on the last day of the week. If I had only weight myself on that last day, it would seem as though I hadn't lost anything. But I did. It was probably water weight. So ever since, I really like to keep track of every weight fluctuation. Daily.0 -
Potentially, there is a scientific and mathematical approach that could be applied to your data, which could distinguish between normal weight variation and 'special causes' (unexpected weight gain or loss).
I've applied this methodology to many manufacturing processes in the past. And it's a proven method in finger-printing normal variations in any process and avoiding panic.
Personally, I think a study of this with respect to weight loss would be interesting. After all, weight loss is a process. It should work.
If you could send me your data somehow, I'll have a look for you. It would be rather interesting to see if it is of any use.0 -
