    Well if it was real, the take home message -- the 500 calorie diet isn't a viable, long-term option for permanent weight loss. So if the OP was truly looking for an answer, it was given. :)

    Yeah I think the more accurate statement would be that the OP did not intend to listen to any advice other than what she wanted to hear, not that the thread wasn't real...

    Sadly, too many come here seeking validation rather than advice and any information contrary to their preconceived world view gets ignored.

    Well if it was real, the take home message -- the 500 calorie diet isn't a viable, long-term option for permanent weight loss.

    Why not? You eat 500 calories for two days a week and maintenance the rest of the time. When you hit your goal weight, you cut out the fasting days and eat at maintenance every day. Why isn't that a viable long-term option? In a way it seems easier as you would get used to eating at maintenance level right from the start.

    MFP set my target at 1200 calories a day when I joined up, and though I have increased my daily target since, I am finding it a challenge to actually increase the amount I am eating. I have lost an average of 0.5 lbs a day since I started about 5 weeks ago.

    Because it isn't applicable to individual needs. It also isn't a viable option, because the only diet that works, is the one you can see yourself doing for the rest of your life.

    OP's not talking about 5:2 fasting. She's talking about eating 500 calories a day for 10 days. There's no eating at maintenance any other day, just a flat 500 calories every. single. day.

    This. OP saw a post in a magazine about how celebrities drop weight fast. She is looking for a quick fix. Whether or not IF is a viable long term option is not relevant to her question - she wants to do this for 10 days and specifically asked "how much weight do you think I could lose if I tried it"...

    I realise that, but plenty of others have already pointed out that she has misunderstood how the fast diet, as practised by Benedict Cumberbatch and others, actually works.

    I kind of derailed the thread with the whole 5:2 thing. Sorry. The OP is talking about eating 500 calories every day for 10 days. The responses have ranged from "no" to "maybe you could do it and not get too sick". Nobody has endorsed it. Thank god. It's not a good idea.

    While I agree that the thread did derail a bit, with debating the merits of 5:2 and whether or not it is a fad or a sustainable way of life, I did google Benedryl Cumberbund and his diet and it seems he is doing 5:2. The OP either misunderstood the article she read, or she got her hands on a piece of journalism misrepresenting or exaggerating the truth (egads - that never happens!).

    However, the OP doesn't seem interested in clarifying if she misunderstood and would like more info on 5:2. Likely off researching other diets on Daily Mail and Facebook.

    Carry on then. Personally, eating that few of calories anytime would drive me bonkers. There are some studies that show intermittent fasting can be somewhat useful, but they are far from being accepted as universal truths. As mentioned before, it really is just a way of allocating calories while the deficit is still the same by weeks end as it would be using a consistent calorie deficit everyday. If it is sustainable for someone, more power to them.

    Not an IF'er. Just commenting on what I observed in the thread.

    OP. If a paper told you Leonardo DiCaprio wanted to marry you, would you believe it? Just like my granny always said: "Paper never refuses ink". Just because a celebrity is said to have done this type of diet doesn't mean they have. Its all a way of getting publicity for the diet. Do you know that celebrity is getting paid big bucks to say whatever they say about the wonderful diet that helped them get in shape? All lies. Research for yourself and don't believe all you read in a newspaper or magazine. They just after selling their product.

    I got suspicious when someone posted that OP had asked a similar question in another thread so did a little Sherlock Holmes of my own. Does that make me Watson?? Seeing as Sherlock Holmes was mentioned it the thread I stole some of his ideas, sorry used not stole. B)

    Before everyone starts jumping to conclusions!

    A magazine that came free with the newspaper a couple of weeks ago has suggested a so called "fast diet" whereby you eat around 500-600 calories every day for 10 days to lose weight which is the diet used by celebrities such as Benedict Cumberbatch and various others.

    Is this safe for 10 days? If so what could you be expected to lose in this time?

    I currently weigh 120 pounds but want to lose 5 more to be at my ideal goal! I am 5ft 3

    Sure, it's pretty safe for 10 days. But, it's also pretty silly, because you'll probably lose the 5 pounds, but after it's done, you'll probably put 10 back on.

    That's frustrating when people ask the same questions over and over, which are ridiculous to begin with, and then don't take the advice given and instead just keep repackaging the same question in hopes to hear something that validates what you want to hear...
