I found this picture and thought it was awesome, so I had to share!

Every single woman weighs 154, which according to the site is the average weight of an Australian woman.

Well, yeah, weight by itself is meaningless, but when you combine weight with height and body fat percentage, it tells you a lot.

I agree - my point is that comparing your weight to someone else's is a pointless exercise.

And I admit the title of my thread was a bit misleading, but I wanted to make it sound interesting!!

Weight in combination with height means a lot. This would be interesting if they were all the same weight and the same height.

And now you know why they created BMI.

Even if they were all the same height, there are people who are small boned and people who are big boned. I am small boned and should weigh no more than 110; people my height who are big boned should weigh no less than 125.

Sorry but the "big boned" thing is a myth. Frame structure (wider clavicles, wider pelvis', etc.) can differ, but the actual circumference of the bones from people of the same height hardly differ at all.

Exactly. Maybe the same height and weight, but different athletic abilities/specialties. Body of a swimmer vs a weightlifter vs a body building vs a softball player...

Nice edit to avoid trashing mods

And do you both have the same amount of muscle/fat? Or are your wrists only bone?

Sorry, you said "big boned" is a myth. You are correct. The bones from one person to another do not vary in actual circumference, to my knowledge. When I refer to "big boned", I am talking about the wider structure of the bones. It is a common term in the south. And people with wider structure of bones generally will weigh more at their ideal weight than those with slimmer structure of the bones. Can you hear me now?

bone density does vary from person to person. Now if there is enough of a difference to argue it I can't say. Wrist size can be very miss leading when talking purely size. muscle, fat contribute hugely to this. My wrist size has changed drastically since my weight loss journey began.

weight is only one measure you should look at.

    Weight
Clothing size (less and less as they go with vanity sizing)
    BF%
    BMI
    measurements
    medical tests
    How you feel

All of those things are measures when combined give you a better overall picture of your total health/fitness (mental and physical)

Bone size is something I have heard a lot...I was always told I am "big boned" because I wear a size 8 shoe (as a woman) and my shoulders are broad...I never thought I would ever wear a shirt smaller than a large....guess who wears a small...

Big boned is Eric Cartman's attempt to rationalize away his weight issues.

I thnk the big bone thing is really the big frame argument. What stef said weight is only one measure, but if you have the height and age, then its far from meaningless, it just isnt everything, but we already know that.

Yeah, I read that in Cartman's voice. I used to think I was big boned. Turned out I was feeling sorry for myself and attempting to rationalize my being overweight.

My bones are now of normal size.

Yep, didn't realize until I posted! My wrists are only bone, not fat. I can put my fingers around my wrist and my thumb completely covers my middle finger, even though I still have about 35 pounds to lose. Meanwhile, people who aren't overweight at my height weigh nearly as much as I do, but there's a huge gap between their thumb and middle finger when putting them around their wrist, even though their fingers are longer than mine.

Yes, and every mammal has seven cervical vertebrae, from giraffes, to gerbils. One cannot have a wider pelvis or clavicles than another unless the measurements of the bones are disparate. Your point is everyone has the same bone size???

Yeah, my wrists are almost 8" around with absolutely no fat on them. Big boned is most certainly a thing. I wear the same sizes as people who weigh as much as 80 pounds less than I do.

They all may weigh the same, but some clearly look better than others. And some are obviously overweight while others are not.

So meaningless is not a word I would use to describe weight. It is very meaningful, but other factors need to be considered along with it to give it context.
