Hey everyone. My Names Kristin. I am 24 years old. I am 4'11 and weight 180lbs. Im having trouble losing weight so I went to the Dr to make sure everythings working properly. My heart and kidneys are fine. But my thyroid is enlarged. My primary Dr said I dont need to take medication for it. My T4 is also 14.8 when its suppose to be 13. What should I do? Would a enlarged thyroid make it hard to lose weight? Why am I having all the symptoms of hypothyroid.

If your T4 is elevated, you are hyperthyroid. If you have not already done so, you need to talk to an endocrinologist. Since hyperthyroidism does not cause weight gain, most probably you are eating way more than you should, sorry.

As I said upthread, I lost the weight when I learned to log everything I eat & drink accurately & honestly. Logging works.

I thought I was gaining for no reason, but logging showed me I was eating way too much. (I think Hashimoto's messed up my hunger cues.)

I had hyperthyroidism.. did ALOT of research coz stuff being on medication for life.
Doc said hed give me 3 months to go back for follow up.
Smashed broccoli, cut sodium, iodine (seafood) as much as possible.
Went back and it was all normal. My throid is swollen and has been for last 3yrs i do t know if it will go down.
I know when i have flu or im run down because it gets bigger.

Id say i live a healthy balanced lifestyle..

When youre hyper you have to try maintain your health because if you go too far you will become hypo.
My gran is hypo, on my mums side, shes overweight, has depression and just recently demensia, has been on thyroid medication her whole life, she never exercised or worried about what she put in her mouth. Be if she had a chance to go back and change life she would..
On my dads side his mum, his sister all had thyroid issues... dad and aunty both got cancer.
My dads had his thyroid removed, my aunty has been battling it for 9yrs as it spread.
So you can imagine i was sh!tting myself!
But as long as you exercise, have a balanced healthy diet, Do research and look after youself you shouldnt need drugs.
I also discovered thyroid issues stem from emotional issues as do most diseases / illnesses alot of people have issues they dont deal with, traumatic experiences or even self esteem and confidence issues. Upon finding this out i have been on the path to dealing with it and so far so good, i havent been sick again. ☺

Keep positive, keep consistant, give a f..k about YOU and your body, be awesome.

    All the best. ☺

Sorry but just no. Terrible advice. Go back to your dr, ask for clarifications. No diet will treat am autoimmune disorder, prevent thyroid cancer and avoiding medication for hormonal disorders is pointless and dangerous.

Hashimoto's is an autoimmune disease. Sometimes your thyroid responds to the attack by producing too much T4 rather than not enough.

No. To have symptoms she needs to be seriously hypothyroid, which she is not. If she was obese because of hypothyroidism, she would be seeing crazy high TSH and would be dropping asleep mid-sentence at this point.

The symptoms I do have are hypothyroid. Not hyper. But my numbers say im hyper and my thyroids enlarged. Its weird. I am eating below 1200 cals a day and working out 5 days a week for 30 mins. I should be losing weight at this point. The scale was fluctuating between 185-180 everyday. But the past 3 days it hasnt went up only down. 3 days ago I was at 182. 181 yesterday and this morning im at 180. So im hoping 2morow I see the 179 that was my goal for this month.

Then keep doing exactly what you're doing for a few more weeks and see how it goes. DONT GIVE UP IF THE SCALE GOES UP A LITTLE AGAIN.

You are not eating 1200 calories and maintaining at this weight. Not possible, no matter whan medical condition you suffer from. Hypothyroidism, which you do not have, would not explain this. Perhaps it could be possible to eat this little and stay at this weight if you were in a coma, probably not possible even then. I know it is not what you want to read, but you are not eating what you think you are eating, you are probably eating 2 to 3 times more calories than this. Use a food scale, do not eyeball things, do not use cups, weigh every single thing that passes through your mouth. Do this for a few weeks and you will have your answer.

Not enough information from just T4 results. You need to know TSH, Total T4, Free T4, Total T3, Free T3, and RT3 to make a proper diagnosis.

The weight gain from hypothyroidism is due to increased cellular absorption and accounts for ~10lbs. The rest is CICO.

Welcome back! Keep logging - make it part of your life and log everything. Awareness is the key to this. If the scale isn't moving focus on other positive gains. Don't think in the short term and make small changes that will have an impact over a long period. You're doing this to improve your life, not just lose pounds.

The scales going down now. Im at 179 now. Im eating the same things everyday. Eggs wheat toast and cheese for breakfast. Shredded chicken on wheatbread with a tiny bit of bbq sauce and a small saucer of dinner. Plus exercising 30 mins a day 5 days a week. Im definitely eating under 1200 cals. My counter says I have 900 cals left for dinner and thats the only thing I have left to eat for the day. So even if I was off a bit. Theres no way I can eat a 900 cal dinner.

You met your goal 2 days ahead!

(But don't kid yourself, ok? Be honest. Three slices of pizza can be about 900 calories. You didn't get to 184 lbs by not knowing how to eat 900+ calories at dinner. Be vigilant. Make SURE you're eating under the 900 calories for dinner. Weigh. Track. You got this!)

It's hard but try to take a longer-term view of weight... sometimes women particularly can have what my doctor calls a "whoosh" (she's super technical sometimes) where the scale doesn't move much for a few days or couple weeks then bam you're down (particularly if your sodium consumption is high or you retain water weight for some reason). & home scales aren't always the most super-accurate.

    Keep at it!!!

No. As someone who also has Hashimoto's, you can swing between both hypo- and hyper- thyroid conditions, even if your TSH is normal, as the body's immune system attacks the thyroid. She could also have another autoimmune condition, they tend to go in pairs. Most endos, mine included, will test you for gluten intolerances or celiac disease and other hormone imbalances to see if the Hashimoto's is connected to something else going on in the body.

The endo will clear it all up. Good luck!
