2390 to lose 2lbs/week seems WAY too high...imo

Options
So 2390 is what mfp set for me, but I've decided to keep it around 1200. Yesterday I was right on track, about to have another 300 to round out my 1200 cal day and BAM, friends, booze, and pizza showed up at my door... I dont regret it, but looking back (I dont know how I manage to drink and log, but I somehow do) it says that I STILL could have eaten 400+ more and lost 2lbs per week at that rate...Do you guys really feel MFP is accurate here?? yfnnys0s8xmg.png

I eat what MFP tells me and I am losing the expected 1lb per week I set as my realistic and sustainable goal. I eat a portion of my exercise calories too. Because science.

You undereat for a make, let alone a male your size even with losing weight, you've been told this numerous times but you'll still ignore it because you know better.

1200 is VERY low for a male, especially one of your size. 1500 is the minimum for a male, period. It's not sustainable and it's not healthy. If you think 2400 calories is too high, why don't you aim for 2000 instead? Test that out, for 3-4 weeks and see what your average weight loss is. It's a numbers game and you have to find the # that works for you and isn't hard...

I do believe though that MFP knows more about this than you do.

Just doing what two professionals told me is fine for me..if you doubt that's ok too..but 2400 cals to lose two pounds just seems insane to me.

My daily goal is 1700 cals to lose 1.5lbs a week.. I always feel as though it's too high, also 4 days a week I can burn an extra 5 or 600 cals, so then I get to eat 2300 calories or something.. it does seem crazy.

What you've said is, your doctors have told you to keep doing what you're doing. You have never clarified whether you have disclosed to them that what you are doing is undereating for extended and therefore dangerous periods of time.

I bring this up because I don't want other people to come here, read this and think that 1200 calories per day for a male of any size is a good idea.

Yes, MFP is accurate here. It's math. It's simple math. If you want to choose not to follow it, that's your call.

When I started, I think MFP recommended something like 2450 for me to lose 2 pounds a week. I ate that, reducing it as the recommendations changed as I lost weight. I didn't eat back exercise calories.

Just curious - what professionals? Were these nutritionists, dietitians, or general health care providers.

1200 is extremely low - too low for a 27 year old male. You need to protect your existing muscle mass, so ensure you eat enough protein as you lose. Keep some lean meat on hand or other good sources of protein around.

I drink a log - just becomes a habit: log beer into Untappd, log beer into MFP, drink, repeat...

I'm a professional... 1200 is not OK unless you are being actively supervised and guided by a weight specialist (aka physician or dietitian). Eat more food.

Um, you asked our opinion. Some of us gave you one. It just happened to be not yours.

If 2400 to lose 2lbs a week seems insane, imagine what you were eating to get the point of having to lose the weight. That's what's always boggled my mind. I lost 50lbs using the CICO philosophy years ago, eating 1500 calories to lose. It's hard for me to fathom I was eating that much more while I was heavy. MFP works if you listen to it.

My advice is to try what it says for a month...what do you have to lose? A month? Big deal.

You have a very high TDEE, so yeah, you can get away with eating quite a bit to lose weight. I'm assuming that you ate way more than that before deciding to lose weight...

I have to comment on your entries though, 'chicken breast, baked and seasoned' doesn't seem accurate at all. Use USDA entries or make your own for homemade stuff.

And it is obvious from the diary you posted that you aren't following a medically directed VLCD (very low calorie diet).

Seriously, follow MFPs guidelines, track your weight for one month, then look at the last 2 weeks of the month to get a sense of your rate of loss. At that point if you aren't losing the 2 lbs/week you can make adjustments.

OP simply strikes me as another attention seeking eating way too little know it all on MFP.
I truly hope not too many people try to emulate him.

Lol how is this attention? Words typed in to this fairly obscure forum hardly seem like attention. If I could start a conversation without a name being attached I would, but I'm certainly not going to make multiple accounts..(is anonymous posting a thing, btw?)
But I am trying to get a conversation going, I know a lot of people here are MFP die hards, but I like to play devils advocate as its important for a healthy debate.

It's noteworthy how you avoided answering what types of "professionals" told you to do what you're doing and if they are fully aware of your plan. Self placement on a VLCD plan is dangerous and promoting such behavior is a violation of MFP guidelines.

What do you want us to debate? MFP has set you healthy weight loss goals based on your stats, but you choose not to follow it.

It seems insane because you are making things up and have no clue what you are talking about. A tiny bit of research, science, and math would tell you that 2400 calories is probably right.

    I'm 5'11" and was 220lb and was losing 2lb/week at ~1800 calories.

1200 calories is what is insane...
