Hi guys I'm just posting to see what you runners think. . I live in a built up area so my runs are mainly through the neighbourhood with only a few small trails. Unfortunately now the morning is getting darker I have to leave the house about 7.15 am for my run. I have a problem now. .....We have recently received a large number of immigrant families. .no problem with that ..but there are large groups of about 8 or 9 young men who hang about constantly just causing problems for people where I live. I have to pass where they are all stood and now feel really uncomfortable and I have to admit a little unnerved. Our police and neighbourhood watch are unable to do anything about them and we as residents have been advised that there will be more moved into the area. I do not have any problems with them just feel unable to go running as I now am concerned each time I come round a corner. I cannot find a running partner who can run at the same time as me because of commitments etc. I just wondered what your thoughts are. I really hate the gym and treadmills. Do you think I have cause for concern. My husband is very worried about the situation. ..I haven't gone today

What kind of problems are they causing within the community? Is it just verbal harassment, a general vibe, or actual physical harm to property/persons? If its either of the first two, I'd say that you are probably fine. It's good to be cautious, but whenever I run by some shady looking folks, I remind myself that other people, by and large, don't actually want to cause trouble or hurt me. Maybe you can just run by on the opposite side of the street?

Was supposed to run 8m today, ran only 4 for. If I run the other 4 this evening would it be cheating myself into thinking that I can run 8m straight? I'm training for a Half marathon early next year. Last Saturday I ran 6m straight.

    Total 42.01

I laughed out loud while running yesterday: I realized that I was doing the "quarter butt pinch", I also have recently been pulled into the soprano section after singing alto for 40+ years. High notes are "iffy" and a fellow soprano told me to kegel (men can google it....) to help me reach the higher notes (it works!!!!). Between "butt contractions" and kegeling....my husband is a happy man!

Ticker is my goal for 2015 and accumulation to date:

Had to pick up the hubby at the airport last night and had dinner after, so had to run a little earlier and only had limited time. So I got 3 miles on the treadmill. But boy did it make me hungry! I guess it's a good thing I usually run later, as it seems to keep me from being too hungry at least until the next day, and I usually don't feel like eating a lot in the morning anyway. But I enjoyed a yummy Thai dinner.

    9/3 4 miles
    9/4 3 miles
    9/6 4 miles
    9/8 5 miles
    9/10 5 miles
    9/13 4 miles
    9/15 5 miles
9/18 3 miles for a total of 33 miles out of 40 miles goal for the month.

I'm off to Nashville next week and may not get much running in. I'll have to try and get a few more this weekend, and maybe try to get a couple in a morning or so while traveling as I'll spend the evenings hanging out with friends of mine that live in the area.

Question to everybody: do you know of/watched a video on good form of running that you liked? I would love to see some to work on my own form. I know there are a lot on the internet, but since I trust so many of you strong runners I thought to ask!

    Everybody is doing awesome.

@dawniemate This is how I deal with these things. Two things I follow, (1) respect my instincts and (2) safety first. Of course there are numerous psychosocial questions about why we feel a certain way or another in certain circumstances and under certain conditions. Those are worthy questions to ask and reflect on. But those are very different from what we need to do while running. Good luck.

    9/1 rest day -- elliptical
9/2 4.2 miles -- wasn't that easy for some reason, but done!
    9/3 rest day -- elliptical
9/4 3.17 miles -- that was probably the most difficult run since I've started seven weeks ago. The humidity was so defeating and soul crushing!
    9/5 rest day--too hot/humid, elliptical
    9/6 rest day--too hot/humid, elliptical
    9/7 3.32--running again!
9/8 rest day -- no workout
    9/9 3.52
9/10 2 -- decided to run two days in a row for first time
9/11 3.18 -- another day of running (three days in a row)
9/13 3:11 -- took a day off bc of heel pain (did elliptical though) -- fasted 5K: pace 9:51/mile.
    9/14 4.51
    9/15 4.12
    9/16 rest day
    9/17 4.75
    9/18 rest day (elliptical)
    9/19 4.35

Parkrun this morning. really wasn't feeling it. My calves were super tight, even though I did an hour yoga yesterday, and foam rolling this morning. Ran pretty slow, but it was a nice easy going run. Nice to finish and not be close to death at the end.

9-1: 3.08 km...everything was going fine for the first 2k. First run after a very well-fed and drank vacation (seriously, a rib-eye the size of my forearm for the last dinner). 2.5k, I notice how tight my right leg feels. I loosen up my shoe and that does nothing. I started walking, and tried to pick back up but I was in so much pain I had to call my mom for rescue. Ugh.
9-4: 4.24 km...Wanted to take it slow today so as not to agitate anything (foam-rolled the sheet outta my leg the other day). Very hot, not a fun run at all. Slow paced, so slow it was on par with my c25k week 7 overall pacing which INCLUDES the 10 minute warmup/cooldown. Boo.
9-6: 5.45 km. My longest run yet! Pacing was much better than it has been in the last 2 weeks. First race is 2 weeks from today, looking good!
    9-10: 2.12...treadmill running. I don't know how I'm gonna stay motivated if I'm stuck on a treadmill.
9-11: 3.83 km. Treadmill running. Blech. On the plus side I completed my first week of student teaching!
    9-13: 5.52 km...new 5k best of 38:02!
    9-17: 2.53 km
    9-18: 2.37 km

13/09 - Rest day. No motivation to run having only gotten home from A&E at 3.30am
14/09 - 1.5 km to finish off my gym session. Getting a new gym plan next week so may not be able to manage much running at the end of each session, for the first couple of weeks anyway.
15/09 - BAM! Just met and exceeded my monthly target with a 5.28 km lunchtime run

I must be going mental. I will eat near anything now... Last week was fruit I suspected was edible, today was an unopened little bottle of G2 (purple-my fav) just laying in the grass near a larger parking lot that the softball players use. My husband said I drank someone's p. It was unopened... And I'm still alive. Anyone notice this odd behaviour after taking up running?

@ohhim - very cool that you can do that. Enjoy your cruise.

@elise4270 I have to say no. I might eat the plum, but I wouldn't the G2, then again if it was a milky way bar I'd eat it. LOL

XC meet rest day. My girl continues to have a good runs. 22:07 today, her new coach is really proud of her and is setting at sub 21 for her by the end of the season. He talked with her for a long time after the meet in what he wants to see from her, including running 2 days a week with me in the morning. He said the extra "slow" runs would be good for her...I think I might be insulted ha ha!

6.8 km run on the River Bank. Tomorrow could be a challenging day.
Group Run in the Morning and then a 10 km run in the afternoon - the 35th Anniversary Terry Fox Run.
" Working Together to Outrun Cancer".
A smart person would skip the group run. A person who has had family members affected by Cancer and who has become a running addict will end up doing both of them.

    9/1 - 0 - 0 - 140 km goal
    9/3 - 6 km - 6 - 134 km to go
    9/4 - 6 km - 12 - 128 km to go
    9/7 - 7.4 km - 19.4 - 120.6 km to go
    9/12 - 11.4 km - 30.8 - 109.2 km to go
    9/13 - 6.5 km - 37.3 - 102.7 km to go
    9/14 - 6.8 km - 44.1 - 95.9 km to go
    9/16 - 8.2 km - 52.3 - 87.7 km to go
    9/18 - 10 km - 62.3 - 77.7 km to go
    9/19 - 6.8 km - 69.1 - 70.9 km to go

10 days to get 71 km to meet my goal. Going to be a tight squeeze.
And I am not talking about Quarters and Glutes.

@skippygirlsmom You crack me up with your great pictures of the Shoes under the Covers, The Porta Potty and the Crazy Expression on the Dogs face. Nailed it on all of them. I like how Skips Coach as you as her " Training Pacer". More quality time with your girl!!!!!
    @Stoshew71 oh-you-ran-a-marathon-how-heavy-was-the-sled. LOL
Thanks for posting the clips for the guy with cerebral palsy as it definitely puts a different prospective on things
@unrelentingminx Way to go on exceeding your monthly goal :)
    @dennie24 Great stuff girl.
@HonuNui I Howled while reading your post about "doing the quarter butt pinch" Mental Picture of You and @JoRocka Dancing on the Trails as you run.
@CrimsonWhite If you run into Duane Steele or Carolyn Dawn Johnson in Nashville next week say hello for me. Carolyn is my cousin and my other cousin Russell used to be the Drummer for Duane in Rock n Horse before he moved to Nashville. Occasionally I was dragged along as a roadie when they were short. No glamour all grunt work.
@AlexPaige The way you described Treadmill running [ Blech ] is exactly how I feel about it. Not looking forward to the Dog Days of winter with limited daylight.

@HonuNui - laughed out loud at the "quarter butt pinch" and kegels comment!
@skippygirlsmom - love that you are now Skip' pacer! Just tell her it is hard for you to go that slow too :)

Glad I was able to get a nice long run in this morning with some playtime in the middle for Hobbes with some friends and their pups. So fun watching them run, jump and splash in the water and up and down the river banks! Took Hobbes in the pool with me to get off the dirt and sand from the river. Picked up our elderly friend from the hospital after major surgery yesterday and took her back to the ER in the evening. Hope to get in another short early run tomorrow and the rest of the day looking after our friend.

Had a great run today in heavy rain and saw only three other runners along those 10 miles... on a nice Saturday there'd normally have been twenty or more.

Many thanks for your advice to my problem. I've found a running club that meets once a week which isn't ideal but it's a start. I am hoping once the people get settled into housing they will not congregate in such large groups and I will feel better going out running . Have a great day wherever you are ☺☺

Woke up sort of nervous about this one; I was trying some new roads and I'm always nervous the city has turned off water fountains early. But it ended up being a really great long run. The best 20 miler I've done, hands down! I can count on one hand how many times I walked, and I still managed to beat any previous 20 mile time by about 18 minutes :open_mouth: Before today, I'd never paced below 10:00 for 20 miles, and today I paced 9:14! Plus there was about 950 feet of elevation gain which for me as a born Midwesterner is immense! I can feel the need for more core work though; my lower back was definitely getting sore about mile 18. But I've definitely got my dried fruit + gel combo down; yet again my last few miles were among my fastest and I ended the run on a downhill 7:50 mile. Now it's time to shower, eat ALL THE EGGS, and go to a food + jazz fest this afternoon. Happy Sunday Runday, all!

9/1 - 3.5 miles - way too many pushes on the snooze this morning!
9/2 - rest day walked the doggie instead
    9/3 - 5.1 miles
9/4 - 10 miles last 2 were HOT HUMID and MISERABLE LOL
9/5 - rest day - cross country meet - Skip did great 24th in her division 23:37 no where near a PR but it was so hot and humid you could hardly stand to be out there to watch let alone run. Proud of my girl.
    9/6 - 5.1 miles
9/7 - 5.2 miles of trail running - OMG we had so much fun!!! Skip wanted to practice trail running for her meets and folks gave me some great recommendations of trails to run. We went out this morning and had a blast. The first trail was marked as easy/difficult so it was some easy packed dirt and some gravel with harder roots and rocks to climb. The second was difficult and some parts were about 2' wide and quite a climb (for me LOL). We loved it!
    9/8 - 5.1 miles
    9/9 - 5.5 miles
9/10 - 7.2 miles nice slow pace this morning, just wanted to get the miles in. Still pretty humid (97%) but the temp was 69 so it was nice. Annoying little doggie chased me this morning and nipped at my heels, honestly people it's dark out keep your doggies inside so they don't get run over.
    9/11 - 5.3 miles - cool 64 but humid 100% morning, but nice weather for a run
9/12 - xc meet rest day
9/13 - 2 miles - was going to rest, but did 2 miles at the lake to move my legs
9/14 - 6.2 miles - good night 46 degrees in Alabama in September who would have thought it!
    9/15 - 5.4 miles
    9/16 - rest day
9/17 - 8 miles - started off ugly and then got great and felt good. Negative splits the whole way...that never happens
    9/18 - 5.6 miles
9/19 - 10 miles felt good the whole run (that never happens) every mile under 11 mins most were around 10:34 the last was 9:56 giving me a 10:33 overall pace. I'd have to check but that has to be my best 10 miler. Taking Skip to see US Women's World Cup team play Haiti this afternoon. Can't wait.

    9/6 rest day--too hot/humid, elliptical
    9/7 3.32--running again!
9/8 rest day -- no workout

    30 mile goal

    9/2/ 1.8
    9/4 1.5
    9/6 3.7
    9/8 2
    9/10 2.2
    9/12 2
    9/14 3.5
    9/16 2.0
    9/18 2.1
9/20 2.5 This was my faster run in a while, averaging 10:57 per mile. Running every other day is paying off, and temperature below 80 makes a huge difference as well.

6.7 miles to go--I'll need a bigger challenge for next month.

Many thanks for your advice to my problem. I've found a running club that meets once a week which isn't ideal but it's a start. I am hoping once the people get settled into housing they will not congregate in such large groups and I will feel better going out running . Have a great day wherever you are ☺☺

    Glad to hear!

Thanks! I'm training for the Philadelphia Marathon on November 22. It'll be my 3rd marathon, and I'm hoping to go well under 4 hours :)

    9-20: 5 km

First road race DONE! Goal was to run 37:30...35:55! I'm over the moon!

    34.14/65km
