    Green Day - American Idiot
    Don McLean - American Pie
    Lenny Kravitz - American Woman
Joey Scarbury - Theme From Greatest American Hero (Believe It Or Not)
Grand Funk Railroad - American Band
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - American Girl

I read The Guess Who performed for President Nixon and his wife requested they not sing American Woman.

    Pete Townshend + accordion = [band/song]

I always thought this song was a little out of character for them.

Nothing? Hints? These were his only two hits that I know of.

His first name is the same as an actor Benson.
Hist last name is an Owen Wilson movie character.

Here you guys go. All are part of a theme that = the last performer... Name the songs!

    Glenn Campbell :'(
    Eagles
    Billy Joel
    Lynyrd Skynyrd
    Gladys Knight and the Pips
    =
    Kim Wilde

Trying to make some progress on this one. Like a prior problem, I thought I'd start with acts with fewer known hits. That may not be correct at all, but you have to start someplace. I have lots of the first three.

    Glenn Campbell - ?
    Eagles - ?
    Billy Joel - ?
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
Gladys Knight and the Pips - Midnight Train To Georgia
    =
    Kim Wilde

I had to lookup a Kim Wilde song and recognized it, but can't think of it now.

OK. I may have the "theme" then.

Glen Campbell - Southern Nights / Witchita Lineman / Galveston (but none of those are states)
    Eagles - Hotel California
Billy Joel - New York State of Mind
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama
Gladys Knight and the Pips - Midnight Train To Georgia
    =
    Kim Wilde

Most of those are southern states. She's not from the south. Not sure how I can make that add up to Kim Wilde. Anyone?

oops - i switched mid-clue and mixed up states and cities. Sorry. I was thinking either Galveston/Wichita would work for Glen Campbell.

Kim Wilde = Kids in America (states in America)

Didn't know this would be so hard. So, since you got most, @deckerp, you're up
