Good ride this evening but cut it short after the A/C kicked on in the room and was blowing directly on me. Cold air + sweat soaked top = no bueno.
@funfitfreeme- Still a very good workout, awesome job!
Toast to your mileage so far :)

For those of you who do 100+ miles a week, would a fitness bike be enough bike for that goal or are we getting into needing a road bike. I have a specialized sirrus. The basic one, no disc brakes etc. The tires are 700x32 but are not knobby. I do have some dirt/gravel I need to travel to get to the city bike path loop so was curious if road bikes can do ok with that.

I ride on 28s and can take it on the dirt but it's not ideal. With respect to grip both will have similar characteristics although as it gets narrower there also less traction. Flat resistance is also at play. The handling of the two bike style is where the major differences laid. Being more upright, having a longer wheel base, and a flat bar, your hybrid bike will be more surefooted on loose dirt and gravel compared to a road bike. It's also the case on other surfaces. These characteristic also provides for a more relaxed or more comfortable ride overall. (A slightly different comparison but worth seeing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKMVsMqaErs.)

Where road shines is in it's aerodynamics and efficiency when fitted appropriately. Other than steep climbs, Cd (coefficient of drag) is the major impedance and the major contribution is from your body. Sitting upright and arms wide apart is a huge sail which translate to more work. Your muscle recruitment is also altered by the way you sit on the bike and a flat bar limit your options. Your longer wheel base will also translate to slower cornering (handling) requiring more work to regain your momentum (descending at speeds with a flat bar plus longer wheel base is also not that pleasant).

It all comes down to the type of riding you want to do. If you are interested in cruising 20mph+ and take advantage of others slipstream, a hybrid is not ideal. (In fact, it might even be dangerous to do so and I for one will only tolerate a brief interloper, same goes with aerobars.) A compromise might be a cyclocross bike, but it is a different beast all together. Keep in mind there is only limited number of variants one can do on the basic design but each is tuned to fit a specific niche.

Total distance doesn't really come in to play. Duration on the other hand...

With the Daylight Savings Time change coming up this weekend, my rides are going to start getting dark real quick. As long as I remember to keep my NiteRider headlight charged up, things should be OK. Remembering to pull it off the bike and bring it in and hook it up to the computer is the hard part. If not I get about half way through my ride and the status light changes to red. Then it is always a guessing game. Can I make it home before it totally runs out of charge. Night before last, it ran out about a 1/4 mile from home. Fortunately, the street is well lit.

@kcjchang - I'll give it a look, as I spend too much time running/swimming as well and probably should keep my total weekly stress amounts (between all 3) a bit more even.

@geek23ka - If the gravel is super-loose, I wouldn't do anything smaller than a 700x28 (as I did the C&O canal towpath last year on a 700x32s which worked pretty well). As KCJ above mentioned 100+ miles can be done on nearly any bike, you are just sacrificing a bit on the aerodynamics front (guessing about 2mph at typical speeds), and road bike positions can take some getting used to (but are comfortable after a while). Really a matter of personal preference & a question of what you want to get out of your riding. I regularly ride with a friend with a cross bike, and he fits in fine on both roads and trails.

Was back up north at a wedding all weekend, but I got to install brifters onto my northern commuter Sunday night and did a short few set rides to fine tune/calibrate them. Still, the lack of mileage hurt and I ended up repenting for it on my long ride today. Still, I've also added a few things to my aero bike as I now have a speed/cadence sensor (and can move over the computer easily), I picked up a rear mount solution for a flat repair kit (vs. having to swap over a bag each time), and snagged the ultegra SPD (not SPD-SL) road pedals (A600) as I use SPD cleats on all my shoes.

Oddly enough I was just rewatching some old time trial videos from TDF w. Jan Ullrich and noticed that my leg build is similar to his - likely a holdover from the fact that I started running at 250lb (90lb ago), and my thighs are still pretty meaty (although not quite as massive). As a result, I think I'll worry less about doing 90+ RPM as slower spinning in the 75-80 RPM range may actually be optimal. I've been careful to stay above 80RPM during training rides, but noticed my HR is a bit happier at the same speed over longer periods and my legs don't fatigue too much when mashing in the 70 range.

Interval workout this afternoon, as I confused the heck out of a few other nearby riders on the road, blowing by them during my sprints, then casually being passed, then repeating the cycle. I realized I hadn't been doing as much interval/speed sessions and with a race coming up in 10 days want to make sure my legs are used to cranking out more power at higher heart rates.

Terrible month for me. Limited time with light outside has made it tough.

Only a hair over 90 miles on the bike in October. But that's 90 better than none, and I've enjoyed every one of them.

Still hitting it enough to feel good and set some decent pace on the beat old mountain bike when I can get away from traffic... which isn't easy around here.

Congrats everyone on an awesome October challenge. This was a great group. Thanks to everyone for the support.

I'll be shifting my focus over the next few months to weight training (for toning & strength) and the Stairmaster (for cardio and to train for a Lung Assoc. stair climbing fundraiser/challenge.)

Good luck to you all with the next challenge.

    Final MTD: 318.10 miles

I ended up a hair above 110 miles for the month. Nothing for even me to get excited about.

But major props to all of you riding, and especially those of you out there killing the times and miles on a regular basis!
