Right??! It's fantasy! My point of saying men should read it is the passion, the fun and caring side to the character. Guess I should spell it out more clearly in the future. Sooo serious people!
I do not want any man who I'm going to be involved with to read these books and take anything away from them except that they're awful. The characters are awful, the writing is awful, there is no real plot. And the sex isn't even that great.

And he is NOT caring. He's selfish, abusive and suffocating.

    Wow! Ok, perfect much?
I'm not even sure what that means in context of this discussion. I'm "perfect" because I don't want to be abused? I guess I'm perfect then.

I assume you have never been involved with a real life Christian Grey. I assue you that you would not like it.

Not to mention how insipid every character in those books is. CG isn't the only problem.

Books such as 50 Shades of Grey should be a must read requirement for all men! Just sayin' ... Woot! Woot! :drinker:
Yes! Let's encourage men to stalk and emotionally abuse women!

    Woo hoo!

Don't take the book word for word so seriously! Grey is a great character. Flawed and beautiful.
    No. No, he is not.

there's a lot of reasons why women may enjoy reading this crap while also not wanting to be treated like that in real life. Some having to do with evolution. Some about fantasy about being irresistibly desirable to the one man you want (and it's not rape if it's someone you consent to being with). And I think it also has a lot to do with eliminating sexual shame in the interaction.... I was raised catholic so it makes perfect sense to me.

that being said, a guy reading these novels and thinking "this is what I should do to get some tail in real life" is probably going to end up in jail or shot.

The problem with that line of thinking is that with these type of men, you don't get one or the other. You get the good with the bad, and you either love it or you hate it.

I'm speaking from real life experience... I haven't read the book.

In the 90s, way before the ShadesOG series, Ann Rice wrote S&M erotica.
I knew men who actually read that and there's another S+M author from
the 70s men are knowing to collect but it is written as SciFi. Depends on how
it's packaged to intrigue men I guess.

Yes, the Beauty series and the Gor series.

I need to say that it is very sad to me that anyone needs these books to have a good sex life. Enjoying reading erotica (which these books barely are, anyway) is fine. I get it. But to NEED it because your so uptight in the bedroom makes me sad. Sex is not something to be ashamed of. Asking for what you want isn't to be ashamed of.

Loosen up, live a little and have some real fun!

There are two kinds in this world...

    Those that do...

And those that read about it...

I have read very little of it. I did write a couple of short stories. I dont think they are very good, but I had fun putting my thoughts on paper.

More like all the other stuff in the world just makes people not in the mood. I mean, paying bills or news about Syria are real mood killers.

Ick. There's nothing wrong with erotica and there's some great stuff out there...but the recently released plethora of insipid, watery pseudo BDSM do not qualify. They're worse for adult women than Twilight is for teenage girls. Awful.

I read trashy books now and then but I try to stick with stuff that's at least got interesting characters and a compelling plot. I guess I really can't judge other people for their choice of garbage entertainment, as at the end of the day it's six of one, half a dozen of the other, but I really do believe that that particular variety of mind-numbing entertainment is on a uniquely terrible level all on its own.
