So I was speaking to a friend of mine and she admitted to me that this is how she lost/maintains her weight: she 'eats' forbidden foods and then spits it out, thus avoiding swallowing it.
How gross is that????? Does she have a point?

That's classic eating disorder behaviour. Your friend may wish to speak to someone about it.

    What foods are forbidden?

That is gross. And I wouldn't imagine that can be a healthy way to look at things.

Your friend either has an eating disorder, or is in danger of developing one. That's a ridiculously disordered approach to food.

Splitting foods into "diet foods" and "non-diet foods" is a poor way to look at things.

Today, my meals included two medium rare hamburgers. They were delicious, and high in protein. And they're certainly not stopping me from losing weight, as I've been very successful thus far. I don't need to eat "diet foods", however someone defines that term.

This behaviour is known as "chewing and spitting" and is definitely disordered. She should stop or seek help

That's what professional taste testers do to keep from gaining weight.

PSA: From a microbiology perspective hamburger generally shouldn't be eaten medium rare. Since the meat is ground up you are at a higher chance of developing food borne illness since the meat that can potentially be exposed to pathogens is all ground up together as opposed to a steak where it's only the outside which even a rare or medium rare the exposed part is cooked.

    I think that's entirely different.

Meh. I have foods I eat as much as I want of. And foods I limit. Call em diet foods, or not. Doesn't matter to me.

The only point your friend has is that she has an unhealthy relationship with food and a possible eating disorder. Not to mention she's wasting all that delicious food that someone else could be enjoying AND swallowing.

Taste testers do it because they have to taste the food and don't want to become round balls due to eating a lot. The original poster's (OP) friend does it to enjoy the food without gaining calories. The former is very different from the latter. The OP's friend probably needs to see someone about her problem.

    I agree.
It is also a waste of money and food. Logging what you eat is much more pleasant.

What? I swallow food. I didn't get fat by spitting.

Your friend needs help and certainly shouldn't be giving diet advice to anyone. That has disordered eating written all over it.

I can see your friend becoming bulimic, if she continues with this behaviour. She needs professional help.

It may be gross - but it's also worrying. It's very, very easy to fall into the 'disordered eating' trap and starting out with small 'habits' such as this would set alarm bells off for me. I say this because I used to do exactly the same as your 'friend' and my relationship with food was atrocious. Please ask your friend to seek help.

'She' has no point. 'She' should not do this.

On the TLC show, "My Strange Addiction," there was an episode regarding a woman who did this. She went to restaurants, family functions, wedding, etc, and carried a cup with her everywhere she went that she spit all of her food into.

It was one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen.

It's called "chew and spit" (C&S) and is a favorite amongst some people with EDs. Not all of them do it because some believe that just having the food start dissolving in your mouth might make you ingest a few calories and they wouldn't be able to know how many calories (egads!) so they stay away. And some find it gross, like many of us do.

As mentioned, professional taste testers do it, as do people in wine clubs who enjoy tasting many wines but don't want to get sick/drunk. The wine people even have a name for the thing they spit the stuff into.

I'm sure plenty of dieters have tried it in their more desperate moments. I've heard people who didn't even know girls with EDs did it (or that it had a name) mention it.

It's very gross, IMO. If you want to eat something badly enough to C&S, just eat it. IMO.

It's gross but as long as she's getting enough calories I don't see the problem.

I don't know you well enough to know if you are really talking about swallowing food or a non food item that is commonly discussed in terms of spitting or swallowing ;)

Yuk! Why would you even do that, such a waste of tasty food. She hasn't got a point there's no such thing as forbidden food, unless you are allergic of course.
