11/6 3.25 @ 10:53 on the treadmill (really 3.0 at 10:28, plus .25 at a walk) plus strength training.

11/9 5.5 @ 12:30 on the park trail with the doggy--who really enjoyed rolling around in the leaves!
11/10 2.5 @ 11:38 (really 2.25 at 11:07 and a .25 walk) around the neighborhood in the rain.
11/11 6 @ 11:32 on the treadmill (really 5 at 11:00 and 1 at a fast walk/jog) plus strength training
11/12 7 @ 11:45 (this is really like 5 at 10:50 and the rest a little slower), plus 1 at a walk on the treadmill. I am in some pain...yesterday was squats and lunges and this may have been a little aggressive of a run for right after. On the other hand, I did get to watch the entirety of "Bring It On". Where are my pompoms?!
11/13 2 @ 13ish walk/running the dog for my recovery run.
11/14 Rest day

11/24 Travel/head cold day
11/25 5 @ 12:01 on the Perkiomen trail with the Wooly Dog who is afraid of deer. Beautiful, and I'm feeling a lot better today and looking forward to Thanksgiving with the family tomorrow.
11/26 Ate too much pie and did nothing useful but had a lovely time!
11/27 Only ate a *little* too much pie and enjoyed the family's first trip to a Christmas tree farm to pick out and bring home a "real" tree. My kids were enthralled! Again, no running. But a good day anyway--we brought home a beast of a tree--over 9 feet tall!--to fit my aunt's two-story family room ceiling.
11/28 My place holder for tomorrow, when I intend to get out there and run the beautiful Perkiomen trail one more time before we head home to VA. I am going to have to work hard the next three days to reach my 100 miles for the month, let alone my stretch goal of 110.
@kareF I'm sorry about your health woes--praying for complete healing! You also remind me to wear sunscreen when I'm out in the elements. I try to stay in the shade in the summer, but now I'm hunting out the sun for warmth!
@skippygirlsmom congrats to you and skip for your 15K runs--awesome job for both of you!
@_nikkiwolf_ my toes are hurting in sympathy with yours!
@dennie24 you're doing great--I haven't tried running in the snow yet, but I bet you're even faster on less slippery roads. And as one of the resident turtles in this group, I'm going to say that running 5 miles at all is nothing to sneeze at! I'm proud of you!0 -

I also learned that there's nothing such as "the runner's body" (well, maybe for marathoners and such, IDK)
But yesterday, every body was soooooo different: from preschoolers to octogenarians kicking butt. It was fascinating to see all the range of people brought together by the love of fitness.
I like to joke with my husband that when God was handing out *my* runner's body, he said "and this runner will have short legs, wide hips, and flat feet! This is the super-slow, run-for-days model!"
I have a daughter who is teeny-tiny short for her age--if she's 5 feet when she's grown, I'll be thrilled (and surprised). She loves to dance, she loves volleyball, enjoys basketball, does gymnastics, etc. She's not really built for any of it, but she does what she loves and enjoys it and that's all that matters. Even with a "perfect" body, how many people will ever become "elite" at what they do? So we do what we love and don't worry about whether or not we're better than everyone else. All I care about is if *I'm* better than I was yesterday.0 -

10 km run along the Riverbank trails, a mix of bare pavement, snow covered and glare ice. One advantage of running at night is the Ice really glows under the Led lights. Will be a little short of my 140km goal- missed to many days due to Life events and limited daylight so adjusting to running in the dark with a Headlight.

@kareF Sorry to hear about the Melanoma. A friend of mine had a few spots removed over 30 years ago and hasn't had any secondary issues.
@_nikkiwolf_ OUCH on your Toe injury. Not sure which would be better a damaged Toe Nail Growing out or one that lifts off and a new one grows out cleanly. Maybe a little Red Wine will help it heal.
@ACSL3 Great that you could go running with your Dad and help your Grandma with the Thanksgiving cooking.
@Ohhim Hope that you are enjoying your visit North of the border. Keep enjoying the colder weather.
@beachhouse758 A great first Race experience. All those things you learned will come in handy on your next race. Yes you need to think about another race. Asphalt easier on the body than concrete, dirt/bush trails are easier than asphalt and a real joy to run on as long as they don't have to many ugly terrain points. The crowds, if it is a small race with no Pace Setters try to estimate the crowd and get to the 25% mark - that is where 25% of the participants are in front of you - 75% behind you. This way most of the walkers will be behind you.
@skippygirlsmom Congrats on the 15K Challenge. LOL about the bathroom stall - crazy mental picture of the next person running up to the door and face planting.
@dennie24 and @joinn68 Welcome to the group and there is nothing wrong with your pace's. We all start out at a slow pace and then slowly add Distance to our runs. As we run longer Distances our pace/speed slowly increases without really trying( that's my experience anyway)
@Elise4270 "82% of runners get injured." So..... 82% of you should get this $10 book"
I missed the post about "The Book" What is its title/author?
@5BeautifulDays Had to Google the Perkiomen trail since you had mentioned it. We have a few Rails to Trails conversions ( Kettle Valley, Parts of TransCanada trail) that are great. The way you describe your daughter matchs one of my co-workers daughters. She is considered to be the MVP on her Volleyball team, not because she is the best at setting, digging, serving or spiking, but she is the most consistent overall.0 -

I thought I'd introduce a side question...
what does a keen runner want for Xmas in the way of running paraphernalia?0 -
Got in another long cooler run today as it was a bit windier & rainier. Like yesterday, I held a pretty solid pace for the run as the cold served as an incentive to keep my heart rate up.
I'm hoping to get in a decent mid-distance run again both tomorrow & Sunday before returning to the warm south. Still, with lots of great cooking from my sister & mom this week, and without my usual long bike rides & swims to accompany my runs, I'll need to closely watch the diet. In theory, if I can shave off another 10lb in the next 7 weeks, and the stars align at Disney, I'll have an outside shot at a Boston Qualifier (requiring roughly a 3:08). Otherwise, I'll stick with my plan of gradually improving and going for a BQ in October once I jump up to the 40-44 age group and pick up an extra 5 minutes of qualifying time.

The gym at my apartment is still closed (will be until Monday ) and the university gym doesn't open til 11 (but I have plans from 12 onward) so again: I ran when I would have rather biked. On Monday, I'm going to do a happy dance when I finally get on that darn stationary bike! Good news from this run is that my quads and shins are no longer sore (yay!) but the bad news is that my hamstring is still a piece of junk. It's not as weak as it was right before the marathon, but not as healed as I hoped it would be after such an easy week. Oh well. Hopefully 1-2 weeks from now it will be 100%!
Upcoming Races:
5/1/16: New Jersey Marathon0 -

Sorry for all the ticket post my phone is acting up! I am going to run 2.5 miles tomorrow and 3.1 Monday hopefully to meet my goal. Next month I'm trying for 50. I had a slow start this month so I think it's doable. I will be at 350 miles total since I started. Looking to hit 500 miles by March!0

I thought I'd introduce a side question...
what does a keen runner want for Xmas in the way of running paraphernalia?
@Orphia A good thing for one's Xmas list would be a good winter running vest. You can find long-sleeve running tops relatively cheap, but a good vest can be $70-100 or more. I'm currently looking for a good one that I can put on my list since I'm super broke, but I also have a couple jackets that work just fine and will get me through a NJ winter (but when I go back to the Midwest.... not so much, lol). But I told my parents that the only thing I really need running-wise for Christmas is a pair of good tights since mine from last year are too big now!
Other good running gifts: gel variety pack for anyone moving up to 13.1 or 26.2 training; socks (!); gift card to where they spend their running money; cold weather accessories that a new runner may not have (gloves, headband, hat, etc.); a race entry!; or for the spendy gifter: a GPS watch
Right now my running Xmas list is: winter tights, a particular LS top that is just really pretty, and a gaiter from Oiselle because the one I got last year was not really comfortable because it was too big for my face. And that makes up the entirety of my Christmas list0 -

"Anatomy for Runners". By Jay Dicharry..@juliet3455
@Orphia That might be a nice thing to add to list!0 -
@patrikc333 How do you dress for rain? Its cold and rainy here. I'm hesitant about what to wear. I have a windbreaker that will repell water, just layer over warm clothes?
Anyone else running in cold wet conditions?0 -

I just finished the C25K program on Monday and was very doubtful that I could finish the 5k. My goal was to finish it without walking, just running.
I was able to do it!!
The first of your series of running achievements!beachhouse758 wrote: »The combination of the mild weather and running on asphalt (vs. my usual concrete) made a big difference!
Running on concrete is REALLY hard on your feet. I would avoid that as much as possible and try to run on asphalt against the traffic, a local track in your school district or on trails in local parks.beachhouse758 wrote: »I usually don't like crowds, but I really enjoyed the race. It was kind of confusing because I honestly didn't even know when it started, I just started walking from the back of the crowd. And it took me a while to realize that I needed to try to start running and make my way out of the group of walkers. (I felt so lost)
Most races are set up in "groupings" according to your expected pace. Walkers all the way at the back. People running, say, 16:00 mile, then 15:00, then 14:00 etc etc etc. This is to try and help the faster people from having to dodge around the slower ones during the race as much as possible.beachhouse758 wrote: »
Last, I have a question:
I am interested in working on my pace. I was thinking about getting a Garmin. But wonder if it is overkill.
I'm a big believer in "cheap". I don't spend money just to spend money. I did all my interval training for C25K using a kitchen timer and used that for the race as well. After I had stuck with my running for a long enough time, I decided I would get a smart phone and a running app. I bought a $10 reconditioned Android phone from my pay-as-you-go provider and downloaded RunKeeper (free) and that's what I use to track pace.
I now have a Garmin watch purchased used for $40 but haven't used it yet to give an opinion on what it would do in regard to HR monitoring etc.beachhouse758 wrote: »
I have a Polar FT4 HRM, which I love. And, for health reasons, having an accurate HRM is a must for me.
I don't really have a need to GPS since I don't run trails or venture into unfamiliar territory ever.
If you keep running longer and longer distances, eventually you'll find the GPS features of the apps to be helpful. (IMHO)beachhouse758 wrote: »
Should I just aim to use Map my Run to track my pace? Or is there a Garmin product that can serve as my HRM, while tracking my pace and not breaking the bank?
Short answer: Just use Map My Run..especially since you already have an HRM. Honestly, it might be possible to sync the Polar to MapMyRun and add the HR data to what it tracks already. The longer (in terms of days) that you continue to run, the more you will find that your pace naturally quickens.
When I began Run For God (essentially C25K plan with a Christian focus added), I couldn't run a mile. By the end of the course, my pace was probably around 14:00/mile. I now EASILY run 3-3.5 miles, have run up to 12 miles, and my pace on shorter runs is around 10:00/mile. This was all done by continuing the run/walk intervals. I still do that in races...but the "run" portion is longer now.
Thank you for the tips.
Now, If could only remember to turn Map My Run on and off I either forget to turn it on, or leave it on for days -- that's why I was considering other options. But maybe if I try to make it a habit... IDK.
This race just had a general grouping (sign) for 10 + So all the "slower" ones all grouped together, whether you are a 10:30 or a slow walker, so I was at the very, very back. Weird, but it was fun anyway.
The timing isn't all that important to me, as I only entered to celebrate the completion of the C25K program, but at least I know now.
Thank you for your insight.
*****
Yesterday, I ran again. I usually don't do consecutive days. Particularly bc of the concrete. And I felt fantastic while running, but when I got home my shins started to burn.
Live and learn.
And also, I noticed that for the first time ever running, my quads are sore. Yay! I think it is bc I was running faster than normal. Usually, I am out of breath wayyyy before my legs get to feel any of the work.
So I am happy, not bc of the DOMS per say, but because I think my cardiovascular endurance is improving enough that I am able to progress.
**********
On a totally random note, while waiting to pick up my race packet at a running store, I ended up buying a pair of life changing socks, lol:
Balega Hidden Comfort
The price is obscene for socks. But I don't think I ever want to run in anything else.
Brooks Adrenaline + Balega socks = perfection.0 -
I was really hoping that with running today and Monday I would hit my goal for November - and then I woke up with a terrible cold this morning I'll see what I'm up to doing on Monday (traveling tomorrow so that's not an option), but I likely won't hit my goal. Oh well
@Orphia - I'm asking for new shoes and winter gear (tights, gloves)
@Elise4270 - Just bought the book on amazon. I'll get it Monday Thank you for the suggestion0 -

Hoping your hamstring recovers soon! Are there some stretches you can do to help it recover? I don't know much about it, but maybe YouTube some exercises? I've been doing ankle exercises from YouTube to try and help prepare for running again.. So there may be something helpful there for you too0 -

Thank you! I'm just getting back into running after a while off so I do a fair bit of walking with a little running mixed in lol. The challenges and the people at work are what keeps me going so I'm loving it right now. I've just got to figure out how to not go crazy on mileage during this streak since I didn't have a lot of mileage built up to start with. My max was 9 miles a week so I'm thinking of doing 1 mile 6 days and 3 miles on the 7th day and see how that feels.

I'll get it Monday Thank you for the suggestion
No problem. Ive battled chronic pain for 3.5 years before I found any help. Wouldn't want anyone else to have to go through that.0 -
