I'm a 32 year old male. 5'11 w/ high blood pressure. When I went to the doctor at the beginning of October I weighed 388lbs. My doctor flat out told me that I needed to lose weight, and start exercising. He told me I was young enough that I could get this weight off without having to have surgery, but I needed to start now, not later. It was the wakeup call I needed. He gave me the basic outline of a diet and calorie goal, and I have stuck to that since that day. I take in approx 1200-1250 calories a day.

About 2 weeks in I bought an exercise bike. When I first got on I could barely do 5 minutes without being out of breath. Now I can do 15 minutes on near the highest resistance setting and feel great afterwards, and am averaging under 5 minutes a mile. This morning I did 15 minutes and 3.3 miles. I do around 30 minutes on the bike a day, one session in the morning before work, and one after dinner. I never miss one, no excuses.

The hard work is paying off....when I was last at my doctors my blood pressure was way down from where it had been, and he is hoping that if I keep losing weight I can eventually get off the medication all together.

    Weight 10/06/2015 388 lbs

    Weight 10/15/2015 374 lbs

    Weight 10/23/2015 364 lbs

    Weight 10/29/2015 358 lbs

    Weight 11/02/2015 353 lbs

I still have a long way to go. 350 is my first mini goal, but getting under 300 is the first big goal. It's been hard work, but I actually enjoy working out now and I've learned to control what I eat even if I have a treat every once in a while.

I always worry that eventually the weight is going to slow down coming off... and that will be the toughest but I plan to keep working hard to keep taking it off. I feel so much better than I did even a month and a half ago.

The other big key I think is that I do not drink pop at all anymore. I was drinking pop on a daily basis before. Now it's water and nothing else pretty much. Milk with cereal if I have some that's it.

300 by January seems doable at this point if I keep plugging away as I have been. Thoughts?

Congratulations I was 389 48 year old and 5ft10 I did have surgery and now 294 getting under 300 was awesome keep the faith

You are doing an absolutely amazing job here :-). Did you ever end up upping your calorie intake? I'm also wondering what your daily calorie burn is like? Congratulations on your progress!!

I've upped my calories a bit. I'm still working on trying to eat more honestly. This past weekend I went crazy and ate lots of pizza, steak and cheese hoagies, french fries etc, but I worked out a lot more to balance it out. During the week I burn probably 600ish calories a day give or take(sometimes more). I try to do an hour to hour and 15 minutes a day on the bike during the week. On the weekends I usually do 90 to 100 minutes or so on the bike, sometimes more if I know I'm going out to eat and eating alot more. It's hard to say for sure what I burn cause even though I wear a chest strap HRM I know it's not 100% accurate, and I know my logging isn't always 100%, but thats why I work out as much as I do to not only feel good but to give myself some wiggle room on my numbers... so far it has worked for me.

I know the way I do it will not work for everyone. I work out hard every day of the week. I don't take rest days. I probably eat a bit less than I should, but I feel great. I'm not tired, I have lots of energy etc. My doctor is always in the loop on how im doing and any bloodwork ive taken recently has been great.

I know you were worried about the weight loss slowing, and it will slow, but to be honest it also becomes easier (almost natural) to make better choices and enjoy work outs, just like you are now!

We can all take something from your story so thanks for sharing!

Hey buddy, I was in the same boat early last year. I weighed 437 pounds and had high blood pressure. Since them I lost just under 130 pounds currently weighing 307 pounds. I log my food 6 days a week and weigh all of my food. I'd like more committed people like you on my friends list, friend request sent!

Thanks for the kind words everyone. Accepted friend requests on whoever sent them. I never thought I would make it as far as I have. Starting at almost 390, to be almost in the 250's now is just mind blowing to me. It has gotten easier though. It's a lifestyle change, and I've learned lots about my body and what I can and can't do to be successful. I still eat all the things I used to eat, just in much more moderate amounts, and my physical activity is about 1000x what it used to be. Doing an hour on the bike in the morning is just part of my routine now. Just gotta keep plugging away.

It's nice that you have a doctor checking up on you.

I'm glad to see your thread since I just started to get worried about my 3.25 lbs/week loss rate 4 weeks in. Someone said too fast to be good. You lost 35 lbs in 1 month or 8.75/week.

Ideally you don't want to lose that fast. When I first started I was near 400lbs.. so the first few weeks weight just poured off really quick cause most of it was water weight. I'm losing 3-4lbs a week now which by most standards is still too much. So I don't recommend that necessarily, but I work very closely with my doctor on this stuff etc. Listen to your body is the best thing I can tell you.

254.3 today... I was sick for a few days last week though so didn't eat as much as normal, so I think this will likely balance itself out this coming week once I get my appetite back a bit.

Hey man, just read through these three pages. Amazing work you have done to say the least. I have a couple questions, feel free to answer them if you want, I don't know how much you want to talk about this on here. Have you started thinking about a maintenance weight yet? Have you set a new goal yet seems how you killed the birthday goal? Have you noticed a positive change between you and the Mrs? Are you still only riding the bike for exercise or do you do other stuff as well? I am very interested seeing how you have been losing fast for months now.

Maintenance weight.. not sure. 215 seems like a good goal right now. I think that would officially take me from obese to overweight on the BMI chart. I think 185 or so is healthy for me, but not sure if I want to go that low or not. My main motivation right now is getting off my blood pressure medication.

The relationship with my wife has always been awesome, but we are def more active now in general, and I look forward to the summer now to do more things outside.

I still ride the bike mainly for exercise. I do some light weights a few days a week, but nothing major. I ride the bike in general 60 minutes ish a day, sometimes more if I know I'm going to be eating heavier, or if I just feel motivated to burn more.

Thanks for the information, half of the year the bike is my main source of exercise, going to have to step it up to 60 minutes by the looks of it. Keep going, I look forward to reading about next weeks loss.

249.7 this AM. can't seem to kick this cough/stuffiness. Not eating as much as i normally have been, but also been working out less. Have been trying to slow down the weight loss since I'm closer to goal. Been hoping to stick to 2lbs week max, we shall see how this week goes.

Congratulations on your weight loss success. That’s awesome!

I’m currently on a similar path. I started at over 330lbs, but I’m now at 283. You mentioned earlier in this topic that you were initially on 1200 calories per day and eventually increased. That’s good to hear because I was on a really low calorie diet of around 1200 in an attempt to get below 300lbs quickly. I’ve now increased to around 1500 calories. I’ve been a little hesitant of this increase because I don’t want to slow my progress too much and lose momentum. Seeing your continued success is reassuring that I can continue to lose significant weight weekly, even at a slightly higher calorie intake than my original total.

Good luck with reaching your final goal.
