I Love Tacos but...

They are so darn high in calories even the soft shell chicken ones, and the worst part is I get mine out of a taco truck and don't know the nutrition info... How do you deal with food when there is no way to figure out calories? Also please Friend me if your looking for friends! I am!

Make them yourself
I've never eaten a taco so what's in it? Bet you could adapt to a lower calorie version0 -
I love tacos too. I work them in when I can. Can you break the truck ones down into components? You'll still be guesstimating but it might get you closer to their actual impact.0

That looks quite delicious actually

Although I would have thought the shell would immediately disintegrate on first bite ...so I'd go for a wrap or tortilla0 -

Used to ...not for a few years...and now I barely recognise any of the characters
I grew up in Manchester, where it's based ...there are terraced streets like that (not where I lived but probably 20 minutes away)0 -

All this time, I never knew tacos had to be high in calories.
Easy on the cheese, easy on the sour cream. Lettuce, tomato, jalapeños, salsa, etc. have almost no calories.
If you're really hungry, maybe consider one large one rather than two smaller ones if that saves calories on the tortillas.0 -
I could eat tacos all day! I do rough guesstimates when there isn't info readily available. I'll look for entries that "sound" about right and use them.0

They don't really need to be high calorie at all. Save some on the shell/wrap if you can. Like, eat most of the filling with a fork and only eat half the tortilla. Or get a bowl without the tortilla, and have a side of chips to dip a few in the filling. Easy on the sour cream, avocado, cheese. Have as much lettuce, onions, salsa and meat as you like. Maybe make them at home a couple times to see how much 2 oz of shredded meat really looks.0

Agree, make your own.0

Make your own.
Watch the toppings. Meat and vegetables and a tortilla aren't so bad. It is the cheese, guacamole and sour cream that pile on the calories.
Have a taco salad if the shell or tortilla is too many calories for you. Still tasty.
Find a similar item from another restaurant if you are looking for nutrition information.0 -
They aren't terrible, I use ground turkey and use hard shells
2oz ground turkey 60 cal
1 ortega hard shell 60 cal
lettuce 10 cal
14 grams cheese 55 cal
Jalepeno 10 cal
30 grams light sour cream 40 cal
32 grams Ortega taco sauce 20 cal
Ortega Taco Seasoning 15 cal
270 per taco

Use plain greek yogurt instead of sour cream. It's amazing!0

Also: street tacos are usually the best, just one or two steamed corn tortillas, your choice of meat, and finely minced minced onion & cilantro. Out west they never come with cheese and a drizzle of cream is only on request. They end up being a terrific protein & the carb is whole grain. Plus raw onion & cilantro have lots of fresh nutrients. I like hard shell tacos too. I just work them in when the mood strikes. A life without tacos now & again seems grim.0

Also: rock your homemade taco world by subbing chorizo for ground meats or learn to make a crockpot version of carnitas or shredded beef.0

I sometimes make a taco salad type of thing where I take one hard shell and break it up, add the meat, cheese, veggies and salsa all to a bowl and eat that. I can sit and eat about 6 tacos, but this way I can still eat a big bowl full, but only have one or two shells. The hard ones are only about 60 calories each, so it's not all that bad. I don't do sour cream, so that never goes on my tacos anyway.0

I really want tacos now. I agree, making your own so that you control what goes into them is the way to go.0

i eat tacos all of the time living here in New Mexico...i don't find them to be particularly high calorie.0

I buy regular corn tortillas, 50 calories each. I heat it up in a pan, almost toasting it which gives it a nice firm texture without being crunchy. Then I load them up with avocado, lettuce, tomato, green onions, a sprinkling of cheese and hot sauce. So healthy, easy and delicious.0

That's it! I'm having tacos tonight! I might even have 2 or 3!0

If it's got a hard shell it isn't a taco.
You can have something great without cream cheese, that awful yellow cheese or guacamole.
Tortilla, carne asada, salsa verde, coriander. Done.0 -
