My favorite sign from last Saturday's race.
This was Eric from my Running Group. The PaneraPounders that were not running had an aid station setup at mile 13.2.
And my favorite costume character at mile ~25.

skippygirlsmom wrote: »@stoshew71 the 10K comment someone made was because I posted your 10K split time Saturday before Skip and I left the house. We were trying to get the 13.1 mile marker before you, but since they couldn't decide where I was allowed to park we literally missed you by 1 minute but that probably meant you ran passed us while the cop was trying to find me a place to park ha ha. You should have called me to take a gong picture! They said last year the floor was too crazy with people who didn't "belong" so they really cut down on the people there, no shirt, no badge no access. You ran great, it was so much fun to put medals and hats on our friends as they finished. I was amazed at how different everyone is as they finish. Some people finish all chatty and having fun, others fall to the ground as they cross, some are nasty (only 1 or 2), some of the older folks made me nervous, the first place guy was actually wobbly and so was the first place female. Then there is Josh just having a great time.
....I've met so many wonderful and supportive people here and in real life like @stoshew71 and his wife. The running community here is a best.
Ahhh, OK! That makes sense now. LOL Tell my legs and butt that i only ran a 10K. lol OMGosh. Walking down the stairs. Anyway...
Sorry I missed you guys out on the course. But glad to meet you guys at the finish. The picture with Skip after i got my medal is priceless.
Yeah, I am not really too chatty after a full. lol Josh is funny. Jennifer said that right at the finish of the Huntsville Half last year there was a reporter. Like literally, he just crossed the finish line (after setting the Alabama State record for his age division). The reporter was like, "I will give you a few minutes to catch your breath." and Josh was like, "Neh! I am good!". lol
Last year I was one of those finishers that were making the volunteers nervous on the finisher's floor cause I was in super pain and my heart was racing big time and had a really hard time walking.
I am just glad you didn't have that big hump at the finish like last year. Like literally you would turn the corner into the arena and there was a lady there saying, "watch your step". You go, "huh?" and boom you are falling over. I have no idea how my face was not on the floor last year. lol
I agree on the people you meet in the Huntsville running community. Awesome people. And of course you Allan and Skip were awesome to meet. We met Mary from on here at the Turkey Trot.0 -
One more favorite meme about racing finisher's medals...

@Stoshew71 - Love the marathon report! I had a similar experience of not being able to keep up with my chosen pacer late in the Buffalo marathon; but it was cooler and less humid in Buffalo, so I managed to come close to my target finish time there.
@karef - Popular question. I started running in August 2011 at the age of 55. I was in the process of taking off some excess weight, hopefully for the last time, and about 5 pounds from what I thought was an aggressive goal. (I am now maintaining 13 pounds below that initial goal.) I was out for a 5 mile walk, and felt like running. Ran 200 paces, walked a bit, ran 200 paces, walked a bit. Got home, and found an online 5K training program. Went out to run 3 minutes and walk 1, and found I could only run 1 minutes. Built myself a 2 week remedial program to get to where I could start the 5K program; but I stuck with it. Learned to run, ran myself into injuries on two attempts to get to a half marathon, got some training, ran the half, got a stress fracture, got better, learned to avoid injury. (I hope. It's been 16 months since I came back from the couch the last time.) Ran my first marathon in Buffalo last May at age 59, and it was good enough to punch my ticket to Boston 2016.
I will tell anyone who asks that Boston is my #2 running priority for 2016. #1 is remaining uninjured. If I blow priority #1, all the the other goals will tend to fall apart.

12/13- 10.05 easy
12/14- 6.07 easy
Total- 97.70
Goal- none stated
Today's notes: Monday is normally a rest day, but there were a couple things going on. It was 63° and sunny at noon on a work at home day, and supposed to rain later. Wednesday I have a conference call at 4 PM that is likely to give me a bad jump out of work (in the office that day) and derail my normal Wednesday evening run. I have mandatory Christmas luncheons for work Wednesday and Thursday. It just seemed wisest to run today and plan for Wednesday to be a rest day this week. That way, I can either keep my planned rest day on Friday or have it available for a makeup day if work derails running plans on Tuesday or Thursday.
Upcoming races:
Dec. 19, 2015 Reindeer Run 5K (Rochester, NY)
Jan. 1, 2016 Resolution Run 7.5 mile (Mendon, NY)
Jan. 9, 2016 Winter Warrior Half Marathon (Rochester, NY)
April 18, 2016 Boston Marathon (Hopkinton, MA)0 -
Everyone's stories about how they started running are so inspirational!! The community here is so welcoming and supportive! Fantastic community!0

@stoshew71 the picture I posted of Josh and Skip on FB was right after he got his medal. He was all smiling and talking to her and then he did a TV interview and his arms were going and he was laughing and telling stories... I was like this is a man that just ran 26.2 miles in well under 3 hours for the SECOND time in a week. Good night he's a machine.0

December Goal – 100km
Got a 5km run in tonight and 1.5km walk to cool down (on top of the 2.6k walk this morning)
Legs are feeling great!! Taking around 2km for my legs to warm up though feel great once I move past it. Might sound a bit much, but I have ordered some melanoma awareness tees that I can run in.. they have slogans on the tshirts to remind people to check their skin. It might sound strange I don't know.. but I thought if it helps remind one person now and then to get their skin checked then it's worth it?
Saw a mother and son running and he stopped to walk for a bit. He asked his mum how he was doing and she yelled "You're doing so well. Your stamina is amazing.. You just need to slow down!" He started running again and looked so happy that his mum had given him such great feedback. I love seeing parents out with their kids exercising!
Got me thinking - I really wish I had started exercising more as a kid.. Not just running, but any sport, really.
Here's a question for you all : On the running subject - How old were you when you started running? Did you run as a kid and then stop for a few years? Or did you just start up one day and keep going? Maybe someone inspired you?
I ran a 10k as the "celebration" of having lost 100lb when I was 26. I then had some surgery and laziness kicked in with most of my weight regained. Between then and now I have had a few attempts at weight loss and those that include running are most successful in lbs lost and sustained. I hated exercise as a kid and don't enjoy it now but feel satisfied after doing it. Running is way more satisfying as feels like an achievement "I did 5km" feels so much better than I did 40 minutes elliptical training! This group has inspired me to up km's and keep pushing. Did a 5k earlier this year will go for 10k maybe in May. If anyone wants to add me please do - hold me to account lol.

@lporter229 I've found 2 things to work. 1) peroxide solution. 2) followed by warm olive oil
repeat as needed.
WebMD describes it in opposite order and I suppose that more sense anyways.
My husband has to go to the doctor to get them cleared out. He has tried to find someone who does candling but a lot people won't.0 -

Upcoming races:
5/1/2016: New Jersey Marathon
6/12/2016: Run & Ride HM at Cedar Point (maybe)
I am doing the Run & Ride 5k on Saturday and hopefully the 10k on Sunday at Cedar Point.
Oh nice!! I am still waiting for my dad and brother to commit. If they decide to run it, they'll drive from Iowa and I'll come from New Jersey, but they're still making their summer plans (understandably, since it's not even 2016 yet...).
& @Stoshew71 Great race recap! Those are some enviably solid splits. And the warmer weather probably wasn't an ally for you. You will definitely BQ at your next attempt; RCM was a spectacular effort and amazing training cycle for you.0 -

Yes. I believe so....
I added Kara Goucher today, eeee! LOL! I'm such a running nerd. Forget the traditional celebrities!0 -
@Stoshew71 - you did great! Love the report!
@skippygirlsmom - the Daytona HM starts at the speedway, then you run to the beach but are only on it a little bit and then back to the speedway. A friend of mine has done it a few times and says it's her favorite because it's completely flat (not that we really have hills in Orlando anyway). And it's a good time of year for Florida! But the way weather is this year, anything could happen!
@MobyCarp - Excited to cheer you on in April! Amazing running story. I agree with your training plan - don't get injured!

@kareF excellent question and i enjoyed looking at the different ways that people got into running. I never ran before i was 53. Started when i was diagnosed with diabetes i loved it, but ended up quitting in four months (I had a knee injury and had no experience with running or connection with runners to understand the ins and outs of it).
I started again in July of this year (now five months). I love running. A few minor things happened, but now I know much more about running and how to deal with pain/injury. Joining this group was without a doubt a savior to me. I had many, many questions and everybody in this group was absolutely approachable, helpful, and expansive. I don't think I would have made it without the group. I also appreciate how watching other people's runs make me want to do more, not to imitate or to compete, but more remind me of how enjoyable running is.
I don't think i will stop this time around. i already feel i need it so much every once in a while when i don't run for a couple of days.0 -
12/1 - 0 blah day
12/2 - 6.24 (2.66 lunch run + 3.58 dreadmill walk) Felt like an upside down turtle trying to make it thru quicksand. Felt super slow, sluggish, just awful. Later on the t-mill actually felt pretty good.
12/3 - 2.83 Work lunch run...felt good. Not great. Seems like if I take more than 2 days off I lose something, like endurance or lung capacity, something.
12/4 - 2.88 Lunch walk. It was gorgeous outside!
12/5 - 5.25 Walked to neighborhood Walmart for greek yogurt and coffee creamer. Then drove back to get everything I forgot lol
12/6 - Rest day. Letting the knee calm down.
12/7 - Not feeling it.
12/8 - Getting lazy.
12/9 - 3.26 Lunch run. Beautiful day!
12/10 - 3.29 Lunch run...gorgeous day!
12/11 - 2.92 Fast walk at lunch. I dressed for the weather report. Shoulda known better! It was another drop dead GORGEOUS day. Tomorrow volunteering at Santa Stampede and will try to run the route when it's all over
12/12 - Volunteered at Santa Stampede. Mad respect for the ones running while it snows and accumulates on their lashes and nose hairs! I called it a rest day and stayed inside & cuddled with my cat.
12/13 - 5.48 Day was too beautiful to let it go to waste. I did an exceptionally slow run for a solid 4.5 miles, but it was basically an accident. Was really only heading out for a walk but then I let myself do what my body wanted. The only reason I stopped is because I hadn't brought hydration with me and didn't want to have another bad "after run" experience.
12/14 - 2.87 Treadmill. I didn't get my lunch break so I couldn't go out and love the sunshine and warm temps. We're supposed to get a lot of snow tomorrow. If I can tolerate the cold, I'll be running at lunch!
@Stoshew71 Loved the recap!
@kareF I just answered your question with a long response and my computer ate it. I was 51. I lurked on here for quite awhile before asking any questions or removing my cloak of invisibility. I clicked every link posted by @Stoshew71 and @skippygirlsmom , and lots of others. I read every post. Watched every video with Jack Daniels. Then lots of the others that would come at the end of one of his. I learned to SLOW DOWN. Stop watching the clock. Get the right shoes. Listen to my body. Take rest days. Actual rest days. Get out of my own head. Get out of my own way. All because of this group. I agree with @MobyCarp ...my number one goal is to remain injury free. This group has helped me do that. And I'm grateful!
