January to date total – 211.23

Goal - 51 to 62 miles per week, per training plan
expected January total - 245 to 251 miles

Today's notes - Had planned to run 9 miles today and 8 on Wednesday to make the weekly total. It's a cutback week, but the total mileage gets cut back by 6 and the specified workouts get cut back by 8, so I end up running 2 more miles on the free form days. This evening I got very good weather, for January; temps in the mid 30s and falling slowly, with negligible wind. The high had been over 40, so I was pretty sure I'd have clear pavement and sidewalks where I needed them; I wore my road shoes instead of the trail shoes, and that was fine. And I couldn't resist my favorite 10 mile loop from home.

The only down side was my headlamp showed signs of a dying battery before I started, and sure enough it failed totally less than a mile into the run. But this isn't the first time, so I had a handheld as a backup. The handheld light actually lets me see where I'm going better than the headlamp, but it's not as visible to other people as the headlamp is. That may account for the large number of vehicles that turned on their brights as they were approaching me.

The handheld is also clumsier for looking at a watch, so I was running easy mostly by feel. Amazingly enough, I didn't go too awfully fast; I brought the run in at an average pace of 8:00, versus a target range of 8:00 to 8:30. Mile splits ranged from 7:56 to 8:11, so I was fairly consistent even with some hills on the route.

It felt pretty good. Tomorrow I get to go punish myself with speed work on an indoor track, just when the weather is supposed to turn a little yucky.

    Upcoming races:
March 12, 2016 Johnny's Runnin' of the Green 5 mile (Rochester, NY - need to register)
March 26, 2016 Spring Foward Distance Run 15K (Mendon, NY - need to register)
April 18, 2016 Boston Marathon (Hopkinton, MA)

Surpassed my 150 km goal this morning. This is my biggest month since I got this Garmin and started recording my data on Garmin Connect (19 months ago), so I’m pretty stoked about that. It could be my biggest month ever!

10.05 km this morning @ 8:03 min/km; Av HR 130; max HR 148. It was a slow, hard run again today. Very hot and humid. Garmin Connect says 27.2C (feels like 29.4C) and 79% humidity for my run. Nicest thing about my run this morning was knowing it’s Australia Day today and we will be celebrating. I lost about 1.5kg on my run this morning; had better make sure I rehydrate before dehydrating with nice cold beers at our barbie this afternoon.

1 Jan 13.4 km (long run)
    2 Jan Rest
    3 Jan 6.3 km
    4 Jan 5.4 km
    5 Jan Rest
    6 Jan 8.3 km

    12 Jan 8.3 km
    13 Jan 6.15 km
    14 Jan 6.15 km
    15 Jan Rest
16 Jan 10.4 km (cutback week)
    17 Jan Rest

@MMillard77 Well done on meeting your goal for the month! I'm a morning person too in general but not for running. I guess it takes so much time for the muscles to warm up its bound to be harder going.

@michable Well done on your best month for a while! Very jealous of your warm weather though, give me too hot over too cold any day!

    1st Jan - 3.14miles
    2nd Jan - 4.5miles
    5th Jan - 2.75miles
    8th Jan - 3.25miles
    10th Jan - 4.00miles
    12th Jan - 2.12miles
    13th Jan - Yoga & 30mins swim
    14th Jan - 30mins elliptical
    19th Jan - 3.33miles
    21st Jan - 3.3miles
    23rd Jan - 3.14miles
    24th Jan - 5.51miles

    MTD - 35.0/50miles

I should be a few miles short by the end of the week, but I don't want to push it even a little bit to meet goal as I have a 10km race this weekend and don't want to be tired. I'm happy just to fall a bit short this month, it's the closest I've been to goal in about 10 months! Definitely back in good running habits :)

wow what inspiration these posts have given me! I am at 46 miles on the Dreaded Treadmill so far in January. Guess I better bump it up before I hit the road in better weather. Thanks for the git going attitude adjustment!

I, officially, WAY overestimated my running abilities this month. Will I be ready to run my half marathon in less than four weeks? No. Will I finish it, anyway, with quite a bit of walking? Of course I will.
That's the way to do it!

By the way, I never "ran" an entire half marathon until I was training for a full marathon. In case that helps in any way.

Do you know if your race will have pace groups? If so, pick one within true reason of what you think is possible. They will help get you there for sure.

ETA - Is 6 miles your longest run? If so, then you CAN do it but shoudl expect some stress, especially after somewhere around the 8-10 mile mark. Plan to incorporate walking breaks at least every mile, and up steep or long hills. If you can do 8 miles nonstop then you are probably ready for a HM, but 10 miles is best in my totally unprofessional and absolutely unqualified opinions (just based on personal experience).

Things are different once you are at the event. You may suffer, but the temptation to make that first HM at whatever the cost is strong and can take you a long, long way.

What is your pace? If you are going to be running over 2:00 then you need to think about nutrition if you are not already doing this...

Wow. You are awesome! Thanks for all the tips!

This is actually the first half marathon I will be completing, but the third I will be training for. In the past, I was running 12-mile "long runs," so I've done the distance before, just not this time around with training. The last two times, I over-trained (I think) and ended up with hip issues. This past Spring, I injured my hip to the point where I could barely walk for weeks. The pain was awful. I did PT for several months, and only got back into running this past Fall. It seriously laid me up for a good five months. This time around, I refuse to run two days straight. I guess I'm just seriously hesitant to overdo it, and I know that not training properly will lead me to possibly overdoing it during the half, itself. This is what I didn't take into account when I signed up for this half kind of on a whim. It's taking me twice as long to get my mileage to where it should be.

For training, my pace for 6 miles is about 11:30 minutes per mile, but that is still me taking things easy. I could push harder if I wanted to, I'm honestly just a little afraid to, at this point.

The reason I signed up for this half on a whim was that I will be in the right place at the right time. I have a 15K scheduled for early April, a 10-miler in May, and another half next September with a few 5Ks thrown in throughout the summer. I did the same 15K last Spring, which is where I believe I aggravated my hip. The following weekend, I ran a very hilly 5K which is what completely did my hip in.

A bit more story than what you most likely want on why I'm doing this half, but I will honestly not be taking this half completely seriously - I never planned on it. One of my best friends, a single mom of a 12-year-old autistic son, has always wanted to go to Disney World. However, she is a single mom, and neither of them have ever been in a plane, before (well, she was once...when we went skydiving!). She knows I (and my boyfriend) fly at least a couple times a year, and that I am relatively familiar with Disney having been there a handful of times in the past. She asked if my boyfriend and I would like to go with them. We planned this trip months and months ago. I let her pick the time of year, and she decided on the last week in February. Months later, I happened to be on the runDisney website looking at their new Star Wars run (I am a nerd...and kind of a runner). While poking through the runDisney website, I realized that we will be arriving to Disney the morning before the Princess Half. Perfect timing in my book. The half was sold out. Oh, well. I went on my merry way. Then, about another month later (we're almost at Thanksgiving at this point) I discovered that I can sign up through a charity, raise money for them, and get into the sold out race. Okay. I looked at the charity and one really stood out to me T.A.P.S. which provides assistance to families and friends of fallen service members. Every member of Team T.A.P.S. runs with the photo of a fallen service member on their back. My brother was stationed in Afghanistan in 2009-2010 where two of his good friends were KIA. I felt like all of this was just too perfect of a coincidence to pass up, so I signed up to run as part of their team.

Since my half will be a runDisney run, I plan on fully taking advantage of the entertainment and character meet and greets along the course. Why not? I'll probably never do one of these, again, and if I do, it's definitely not going to be a regular thing for me. So, I'm not looking to PR, though, technically, I could finish in 3:30 (the slowest completion time allowed) and still PR. I believe they seem to have some sort of entertainment every two miles or so throughout the course (someone can correct me, here). If this is the case, my plan is to take it easy between entertainment spots, and walk through those areas. That should give me good breaks, give me small goals, and keep things interesting.

I will be taking longer than 2:00 to finish this thing, I am positive. I have done some 25K trail events in the past (more hiking/climbing than running for me, but I did run quite a bit), so I am a little familiar with the whole nutrition thing.

I can do 8 miles non-stop. My goal was actually 10 for this training, but as I've said, I way overestimated my abilities given my own little training rules for myself. The most I've ran (race wise) was a 10-miler. The most recent long-ish run was the 15K last Spring which I ran with a 11:41 pace, but my hip got really tight around mile 7 and I walked a good portion of the last 2 or so miles.

I give huge kudos to those who run full marathons! The time commitment for training is unfathomable to me at this point in my life. Maybe one day.

@HonuNui and @shanaber: Walk/run is my plan! I plan on fully enjoying myself more than pushing myself to finish in a certain time. I will be taking my phone, I will be stopping to take photos (it's in Disney World, I think this is perfectly acceptable), I will be taking in the sights while wearing my tiara, and enjoying my 5:30am half. I already know, even if I goof off, it is highly unlikely that I'll finish last. I tend to be a middle-of-the-road runner, pace wise.

Thanks for the encouragement! After an injury last year that laid me up for a lot longer than I expected, I am just glad to be back to running.

OK, Dogs, not running. Runner after work.

@shanaber - Hobbes made the "dog of the day" in my classroom, lol. Those pictures are so beautiful. Don't worry Kody and Macy, you will make it too ! Hope Hobbes is okay with it.
@Stoshew71 - loved that hm running dog story.

@instantmartian - Seems like your plan for the HM is just fine since you aren't planning to race it. Take it easy, and maybe just hang around with the back of the pack? At least that way you have the least risk of pushing too hard and will have more time to see the scenery, chat with others and have a great time.

Today was 4x1200m speedwork intervals with 600m recovery jogs and a 1k warmup and cooldown. Considering I didn't feel too thrilled to do 4 intervals of that length at that effort this morning it turned out fabulous!

    1/1 - 2.25 miles
    1/3 - 4.1 miles
    1/5 - 6.5 miles
    1/7 - 4 miles
    1/9 - 4 miles
    1/12 - 3.25 miles
    1/14 - 4.6 miles
    1/16 - 11.5 miles

    1/1 - 3.5 miles on treadmill
    1/2 - Nada :|
    1/3 - 3.75 miles on treadmill + weights
1/4 - First day back to office / school...had to stay home to get kids moving and ready.
    1/5 - 4 miles on treadmill + 4.65 miles on stationary bike
1/6 - 4.5 miles on indoor track followed by an extended stretching session.
1/7 - Sick / rest day - not sick enough to stay home for the day, but didn't want to push it for a run :/
    1/8 - Another sick / rest day.
    1/9 - 4.1 miles on treadmill
    1/10 - 4 miles on indoor track + weights
    1/11 - 4 miles on treadmill
1/12 - Life got in the way - sick children, work issues, etc. - Ick!
1/13 - Woke up with a head like concrete...stupid sinuses! Hoping to feel better enough to squeeze in a rare late afternoon run today.
1/13 - 3.25 miles outdoors...woo hoo! Early evening run. Had to watch out for refreeze on sidewalks and streets, but enjoyed it.
1/14 - 4.95 miles on treadmill (Trek class). My feet are not thanking me for two runs in under 12 hours. Plus, the person next to me must have eaten a poo sandwich before class...blech!!
1/15 - VJ the greyhound woke me up 3x in the night to go out, two kids and myself coughing all night and one kid with high fever this morning = another morning of no run. UGH! I am getting cranky...so going to miss my goal this month!

    1/17 - ANOTHER sick / rest day...this virus won't quit
    1/18 - 4 miles on indoor track + weights/abs
1/19 - Seems my body / this illness thinks a workout every other day is enough...grrr!
1/20 - 4 miles on treadmill. Hoping to be able to get another run in tomorrow.
1/21 - 4.65 miles on treadmill (Trek class). First back-to-back run days in over a week...woot!
1/22 - ANOTHER sick/rest day - ugh!! I feel like @#$& (thanks for indulging me in a whine)
    1/23 - 4 miles on treadmill
    1/24 - 3.2 miles on indoor track
    1/25 - 4 miles on indoor track + weights
    1/26 - Sick / rest day :'(

@Stoshew71 - I have seen that dog on a number of news outlets...amazing!
@skippygirlsmom - Your list about Skip as a running partner mirrors my daughter...even when she isn't running!

Of course this pup is all over our local FB running site and people are saying how he will run with them for 10 - 15 miles and then go off and run with another group who goes by. What a hoot.

@karllundy they need to meet and see if either gets a word in. LOL

This woman here is my hero...full marathon on a treadmill. Can't even begin to imagine. I had to grab the comment on the corral because it cracked me up.

Look at Hobbs! I love it @ddmom0811

So went to the PT today, I said I want to run Bridgestreet HM in April, he said then sign up. Lots of work to do on my ankles and hips, but he sees no reason why I can't run completely pain free in less than 6 weeks. Did I mention I love him.

I know, right? I truly had no idea how to predict my mileage this January since my focus was going to be running shorter distances as fast as I could maintain to get my pace up. The first couple weeks mileage was low as expected. When I added long runs back into the equation 10 days ago things quickly changed.

@michable Thank you! Not stopping there though :)

Went out on my lunch break, ended up getting lost somewhere in the midst of farms and country roads, and added an extra mile onto what I'd planned to do.

    1/1 - 3.36
    2/1 - 3.08
    5/1 - 3.08
    8/1 - 3.25
    9/1 - 3.08
    10/1 - 4.66
    12/1 - 3.56
    14/1 - 3.65
    19/1 - 2.90
    20/1 - 3.48
    23/1 - 3.65
    26/1 - 4.40

    Total - 42.16/35

@WhatMeRunning Because of the link you shared yesterday, I got all motivated and google-happied myself into some good basic stretches and foam rolling techniques for the ITBand issues I seem to be having. I gotta say, after icing the dickens out of that area for the last two days, stretching, and foam rolling last night...I slept all night for the first time in a week, woke without wanting to grunt or groan from the pain, and actually feel a lot better in that area. Almost feel like I could run without pain, but I'm sure that's just the ibuprofen talking lol.

I have 3 miles I was supposed to do yesterday that I think I'm going to just let go of, and I joined a running group that I'll meet up with tomorrow night for the first time. I'm excited and really nervous at the same time. I'm a lot like @MorningGhost14 and run solo. I'd like to find out if I run solo because I really like to, or if I'm too scared and too self-conscious because I'm rather slow-pokey. I'll know more tomorrow. My biggest challenge will be to show up, introduce myself, and actually run with them!

That's not enough mileage. Everyone knows you don't run exactly 26.2 miles in a real marathon. More like 26.4 or a little more depending how much weaving you do. LOL

Hope you get all your nicks healed up soon. BTW, you guys doing Havok this weekend? Free adult jersey Saturday night. We are talking about it.

@MMillard77 and @michable: Congrats on breaking goal!
@Stoshew71: I love how your ticker says you’ve done “2211.35” miles this month. :D

    (You've seen all this before.....)
    Jan 24: Rest day
Jan 25: Wimped out, just wanted bed after Boy Scouts (my son’s meeting not mine :P )
Jan 26: In the 40s this morning!!! 5.2 miles Not sure if I’ll get to goal this month or not…it’s going to be close. We’ll see how I feel tonight, maybe I can log another 3 or so.

The reason I signed up for this half on a whim was that I will be in the right place at the right time.

That's a great story, and I really appreciate your effort on behalf of your friend! Having just done my first HM (2:29:08), with the longest training run being ~11.5, I can say you're ready, and the fact that you're doing it "just for fun" is an excellent idea.

Have a great trip - we've got your back!

@stoshew71 I'm sure the minute that dang thing hit 26.2 she jumped off ha ha

Are they doing jerseys on Fri or Sat night? Skip has an indoor meet on Friday. We've only been to one game this year. :frowning:
