Don't say "Diet" Just say "I'm eating correctly"

    I agree that I don't like the word diet because of the negative connotations associated with it. For me it says that you have failed to maintain a healthy weight and therefore must be on a diet. Similarly with exercise I grew up in a culture that didn't exercise regularly for health, but seemed it was only needed for those who were not a healthy weight - I know this sounds crazy, but for a long time having to exercise for me felt like I was admitting failure. Granted I had failed, but it was painful to admit it. I had to learn that regular exercise is for everyone!

    To add to the conversation, I would suggest not using the phrase "cheat meal" because it implies you're doing something wrong. I've retrained myself to call them treat meals :smile: Thought this might be up your alley!

    @Merkavar Can't we just agree that all these terms like diet, clean, correctly when it comes to food are all very subjective and personal and are more opinion than fact....

    For those of us trying to lose weight, we are eating (or should be) eating less calories than we burn daily.

    I suppose if you get an irritated response with "I'm eating correctly," you could try "This is the way I eat all the time. It works for me." Your listeners are free to imagine that something else works better for them, and you've headed the conversation away from the idea that you're on some special, temporary regimen that they should try to get you to discuss and define and compare to whatever fad has caught their attention this week. There's so much "good food/bad food" lore floating around that some people are going to bristle whenever they hear the word "correct," or even start to argue with you about what foods are most correct, and especially whether you're implying that what they eat is incorrect, which I assume is the last thing you want.

    For those of us trying to lose weight, we are eating (or should be) eating less calories than we burn daily.

    From the dictionary (pay attention to the second definition):

    diet |ˈdī-it|
    noun
    the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats : a vegetarian diet | a specialist in diet.
    • a special course of food to which one restricts oneself, either to lose weight or for medical reasons : I'm going on a diet.

    Saying, "A diet is just the food you eat!" when someone asks you if you are "on a diet" is... well... just kind of being annoying.

    Your first sentence is incorrect.

    That is one meaning of the word diet, but it is not the only meaning. "Diet" also refers to a specific method of eating, whether for weight loss or other reason. And one meaning of the word in any dictionary will be eating for the purpose of weight loss.

    OP has difficulty accepting disagreement. Sometimes too much caffeine (for THAT person) can cause emotional instability.

    It still is your daily food intake.
    if it is weight loss, low carb, or only drinking juice or any other way of eating.

    But we all know what i mean, and you can go into a discussion what it exactly means or not. The point is that the OP has a problem with the word "diet" so i tried to make clear that, i who are not trying to lose weight at all also use the word diet as in eating a balanced diet...>>>>daily intake of calories.

    It's so hard to hear that word "diet". My body shuts down. I have had so many doctors tell me, there is no magic pill, no magic diet that is going to work... everything says, with a moderate meal and exercise. The key for me is this. I have stopped all artificial stuff going into my body. I drink water and juice from 100% pure fruit. I have stopped cooking with oils and frying stuff. I bake or grill chicken and use natural seasonings like, onion, celery, tomato, and other stuff. That protein is small about (the correct portion of meat). I load my plate (using the smaller plates at home.. because the big ones are just way to big and think I'm eating more from a small plate..LOL) with veggies that are steamed or grilled. I eat fruits that are from a produce department not out of a can. Yeah, it does take a bit of time to prep food, but I have picked this change for me. Every time I see something I really would love to eat, like donuts or cake with tons of icing on it... yum)... I remember this. This is my body and I want to live!

    I had a heart attack at age 29. Oct 11, 2011 at 7:56 am. Luckily I work in a doctors office and a nurse came by my office and ran me to the clinic - then to the ER across the street. The life I wanted flashed and I thought this could not be happening. At that time I weighted 220 pounds. For me that's 40 pounds heavier than I should be. Got all fixed up, 2012 I lost weight. I ate the correct foods, I walked, I hiked, I did everything I was supposed to. I lost 32 pounds. I felt like I was on top of the world. 2013... I said, go ahead, you can eat some pizza, donuts and a little cake - it wont hurt. I could not control myself. From 2013 to now, I have gain 45 pounds. Feb 20 at 7:32 am of 2015 I was dressed ready for work when I clot broke off and clogged my heart. I was rushed to the hospital by my partner. The pain was worse than I have ever had. After 4 stents later making a total of 6, I have come to realize, I cannot do this on my own.

    I have a partner that is pushing me to get healthy because he does not want to pick out my casket. I was told by my cardiologist, the next one you will have open heart - no questions. So, here I am today - back on my eat healthy, not calling it a diet because it's what us humans are supposed to eat. Yes, once a month I will go to a restaurant and cheat a bit.. But now I've gotten used to the low salt, no butter thing that it makes me sick to eat it.

    We all can do this. We all are capable of becoming the most awesome, beautiful thinner people in this world. And I am so thankful that I have this place to turn to. Because we are not alone in this change. So, I hope that I can reach out to someone and help them as I also get help form someone. Thank you for your attention and again.. sorry this was so long... I tend to get excited talking about my change in life I'm in progress of.

    Wow! You've been through a lot! I can relate to what you said regarding shutting down when you hear the word diet as it infers restriction and behavioral changes, both of which can be difficult. I appreciate you sharing your story as it is definately an eye opener! I usually eat fairly healthy, but have slacked off the last few months and have need a jump start on my motivation - your story has done that - Thank You! I sincerely hope you can stick with your dietary changes, and that if not now, you eventually find enjoyment in them. There are tons of recipes online that are both healthy and delicious - I usually query recipes with specific ingredients to get ideas, and then substitute healthier ingredients for less healthy options that the recipe may call for. I found doing this makes it easier to stick with a healthy eating plan. I usually cook my own meals from whole ingredients which also helps to keep dinners interesting.
