My diary is open and I was on a 1250 calorie diary in March 2014 through summer 2014, at least. I think that's an example of how you can have a balanced diet with adequate veg and protein, even when including some ice cream and so on.
I eat more calories now (and don't always log), so it's easier.0 -
Soooo... We can't talk about good and bad weather any longer? Yikes! I think it's bad that the words good and bad cannot be used here without inciting a moralistic argument.
Read up the thread and you'll see bad weather isn't as helpful as saying "the weather here today is rainy and I don't care for it," because while you might say that is bad weather, Shirley Manson would say your bad weather is the only time she's happy.

I fully understand it can be done. But given the fact that so many people are struggling with weight issues and not a clear understanding of what to eat, (referring to my comment on people with low calorie diets, but ice cream, chips, etc and not a fruit or vegetable for weeks) and looking at the general population it doesn't seem to be happening in practice for most.

I think most people struggling aren't mindful about calories. I think once you are you naturally gravitate to lower cal more filling foods.0 -

Actually I was lying around sick one day and saw several that looked like they were fully documenting their diet, not being dramatic (unless you count fries or chips).
Since around 90% of Americans don't get the recommended amount of fruits or veggies, the idea that some don't eat any is not dramatic.

I think that's real, and worrying, but I really don't think the solution is saying "no added sugar or sat fat!" or whatever, but instead encouraging people to eat adequate veg and an overall healthful diet.
One reason I'm cynical about "clean eating" on MFP is so many have posted "can I clean eat and not eat veg" or claimed it was only "clean eating" or "keto" that caused them to eat veg. People should know, as a matter of common sense, that a healthy diet requires veg (excepting those with specific medical conditions like certain forms of Crohns).
Since I've always eaten lots of veg the claim that it requires a special diet to do or one won't seems odd to me.0 -

A bachelor attorney friend of mine claimed this was the case for him. He never had food at home; and was practically 100 percent takeout....My stepson's dad and step mother have gone a week at a time not serving any veggies....I do agree that it's probably really rare.

Pretty challenging to find even takeout that doesn't have any veggies included in it, unless it's specifically ordered that way. A lot of people really don't understand just how many different foods qualify as vegetables.0 -

My friend is a pepperoni only pizza guy. I suppose some consider the sauce a veggie. I am not sure the condiments on fast food burgers is enough to qualify...I have to say that when I ate with my friend in restaurants he really did order zero veggie items. But I suppose it is fair to say that some plant food slipped through.

It may be tedious to those who have found their way to the proven CICO lifestyle, however some are still learning what foods work for them.
I have learned that my hunger soars when I indulge in certain foods. Are they bad foods? Of course not. But I learned a lot from people here how to manage my diet so I can maintain CICO.

I think also that people tend to make assumptions about other people without knowing anything about them. How does one person know if another has eaten at a deficit or restricted calories? Everyone has been through something difficult, here.0 -

I used to get takeout too much when I was gaining weight. I mostly got Indian food, including vegetarian choices such as the vegetable jalfrazie. The problem was not a lack of veg. It was that the veg came with too much high cal extras (especially ghee, but also naan, as I do love it).0
