5 miles on the bike. Screwed up and wore baggy shorts. They ride up and my inner thighs chafe. I only make this mistake once each summer. Lol. I was even slower than normal thanks to the annoying shorts issue. 8.3mph. My biking is probably a joke to real cyclists I also ride an $80 girl's Huffy bike. I'd get kicked out if this was a cycling group. Lol.5

Neighbor wanted to run tonight after I got in from the airport, so I joined him for 4 miles of Florida steamroom like running conditions, even when it poured for a half a mile, it returned to icky humidity immediately afterwards. On the plus side, only 18 more miles to hit my goal for the month, and I'm returning north in a week.

5/26 so for those of you who remember Lily the rescue whippet, she is no longer terrified of DH, and happily follows him everywhere, especially to the cookie bin. However, she and Akamai the border collie/Australian shepherd play so hard....that he ruptured his ACL and needed semi-urgent surgery. So, instead of running much, I am dog-nursing. Not too sure I'll scoot past my scootch this month
5/27: 3.15 (on the treadmill with Akamai close by.....)
Total 66.67
Upcoming races:
6/26 SHEPower Virtual 1/2 marathon

Happy weekend everyone. Today I ran with...people. I posted a week ago how some guys started a thing that we should run together every Saturday and today we did. 9 people gathered and we did a 5k. Now 2 of them were really good runners with a 17 min on 5000 m so I decided to do a speed workout to see how it goes since I didn't do one in about 2 months. So basically was a tempo run and it was great. Kinda hot but great.

WhatMeRunning wrote: »@_nikkiwolf_ - I saw your Strava run yesterday with the crazy climb! Your slopes far exceed mine! I had to go 12 miles along the hilliest 12 miles I have yet strung together starting from my house to get my 1400 feet yesterday. The only reason I'm giving you any elevation challenge is just because I'm a bit worried about that hilly 50k I signed up for that supposedly has almost 7000 feet of elevation gain! So I've been doing lots of hills over the last week. I could use the mountains you live by right now for sure!
I'm starting to get used to the slopes around here, but while 10% might be "comfortably hard", 20% are still borderline walking (depending on the length of the slope and the surface), and anything beyond that is a case of "are you *kitten* kidding me?!".
Your planned 50k sounds awesome! If you enjoyed running in that hail storm, you sure have the right attitude for something like that!
@EvgeniZyntx Actually, that "cars hate bikes" thing is not limited to the US, sadly enough. In my little corner of France, a lot of people actually think I am crazy for riding my bike to work, because the number of bike accidents is so high. Not in the nearby cities, but out here in the countryside, a lot of the roads don't have any shoulders to speak of, so you need to ride in the middle of the lane. On the main roads connecting the different villages, people speed like crazy, even (or especially) when it is dark.
And I can't count the number of times I was going round a roundabout and had to frantically break, because a car driver passed me on the inside and then pulled over in front of me to leave the roundabout - when it was absolutely obvious they had to have seen me! I was quite shocked the first few times, now I'm already expecting that every car driver out here will try to kill me. One of my colleages actually got into an accident like that a few month back, where she didn't manage to stop in time and crashed into the car. She flew forward and hit it with her head, and even the helmet couldn't prevent her from smashing a few teeth - not good!
Once you get of to the small curvy mountain roads, you are actually fine, because people drive slower and expect cyclists. They just don't seem to be willing to respect cyclists that are using the main roads. I always ride the long way around on my way to work - takes me 25 minutes instead of 15, but a little extra "crosstraining" can't hurt...
@kristinegift Congrats on the 1001 miles, that's really impressive!!!
@ddmom0811 So cool that you saw Mars! I know what you mean about nauseating strobe lights - I have one which I need to but on my back where I can't see it, otherwise it drives me mad during the run. And as soon as I get home and it starts reflecting off the mirror in the lobby, I snatch it and switch it off, before wiping my feet or digging out my keys. So bright! But that means car drivers should be able to see it even in dark and foggy nights. I'm just hoping they won't be tempted speed up like crazy to get past that annoying blinking light
@lporter229 That's so great that your puppy is learning to run with you! Sounds like you are both having fun3 -
Thanks for commenting on my trail running questions @PoppetsMaster @4leighbee @EvgeniZyntx @instantmartian and everyone I might be forgetting! Sounds like I need to by some smartwool socks or something fancy like that - my "three pairs for 10$" running socks were defenitely not drying very quickly.
@RespectTheKitty Congratulations on finishing C25k, great job!
@DrLauraDVM16 Already past your first goal, well done!
@AdrianChr92 Nice picture! Reading posts like that makes me wonder if I should try to find people to run with too - there's just don't seem to be any groups nearby, and spending an hour driving there and back with the car seems like a lot of trouble...
@Orphia Congrats on the new PB!
Work's been crazy the last couple of days. I'm on-call, and, annoyingly enough, that means people are actually calling me. All the time! I tried to go for a run this morning, planning to do short enough loops near my car that I could manage to be at work in under 30 minutes. After 5 minutes, I got the first call, could solve the problem on the phone, but then I didn't even finish the first loop when I got the next call and had to head over in person *sigh*. Hopefully the rest of the weekend will be more quiet, I might try another loopy run this evening and/or tomorrow to preserve my sanity!0 -
I'm planning for 15 miles today and quite nervous about it. It's still 15 miles if I stop and have a banana mid-way through right?5

Another hot one. We're in a major heatwave out here. It was 67 when I woke up at 5:15 and nearly 70 (and fairly humid) when I met up with my group at 6 am. We're forecasted for temps above 90F this weekend! I'm going to have to head out pretty early tomorrow if I want to do a double digit run before it starts to really heat up.
Upcoming Races:
6/11: Pacers Princeton Halfway Half (Princeton, NJ)
7/4: a fourth of july race somewhere!
11/20: Philadelphia Marathon

@_nikkiwolf_ There aren't any around here either but two weeks ago a guy approached me while running and he told me he and a friend decided they got bored of running alone so they are trying to start this thing. So I showed up and it was fun.

Notes on today's run: I apologize ahead of time for the length.
Today's assignment was to run 1h45m-2h25m Fast Finish Long Run. Weather was....less than ideal, 55 degrees (that's good) but 91% humidity with a misty rain coming down (not so good). Started off wearing my Brooks LSD jacket, but that didn't last long. For this run, I brought my new Nathan Sports Quickdraw 10oz flask with a NUUN lemon/lime tab in the water, and a Honey Stinger Kiwi Strawberry energy gel.
I ended up running 12.2 miles in a time of 2:03:42, for an average of 10:08/mile.
Mile 1 had some slight uphill but nothing that bad. I ran a pretty easy pace of 10:30.
Miles 2-3 were both net downhills, but the short uphill sections were enough for me to feel it. Averaged 10:19 and 10:14 respectively
Mile 4 was the major uphill of the run, including a 103 foot climb over a 0.3 mile section, this was 1 of 2 places where my HR really went up. I ended up pushing a little too hard and running mile 4 in 10:20, when I should have throttled back some.
Miles 5 and 6 were flat then net down hill, going down the hill I went up during mile 4. pretty easy running, averaged 10:15 in mile 5, then decided to get a little rest and did mile 6 with it's big down hill in 10:21.
I can't remember where, but somewhere between miles 6 and 7, I ate the Honey Stinger I had with, as much for practice as for wanting/needing food.
Miles 7-9 were pretty vanilla, some uphill, some downhill. Ran them in 10:13, 10:12, 10:13.
Miles 10-12.2: This is where my Run became a FFLR. I kicked it into high gear for the last push. I ran mile 10 in 10:02, reaching my previous distance PR. Mile 11 was a very slight (-1foot) net downhill, going through town, and I ran it in 9:43. Mile 12, last full mile, a net uphill, with most of that up coming right at the end. Ended up doing pretty well and ran it in 9:26.
Mile 12.2 VERY EASY downhill for the last 0.2 ran it at 9:24.
The new flask, the NUUN and the Honey Stinger were all great. This was the first time I've every run carrying a water bottle of any sort, and I was very pleased with how it worked. I am really liking the Honey Stingers, and remembering something to drink this time made the one today even better.
Overall this run was a very good confidence builder. I could have run to a full 13.1 today, and been under the 2h15m time limit, but that would have meant running past my truck for a second time, and I didn't really want to do that. Also, I had set out to run 12 miles, and 12.2 surpassed that. All in all, this run felt really good, and it was a very pleasant surprise that I could run 3 miles at 10:00 or less after running for 9 miles.7 -

Ran Parkrun this morning, but we arrived so late we had to run the 0.5miles to the start, and at the end I got halfway round our mini-cool-down walk before I realised I had left my hoodie in the collection so I made it into another mile run to go back. But having banked a little extra mileage is probably going to be helpful, as it means I can knock a couple of miles off somewhere either tomorrow or Tuesday to allow more recovery. My right calf is moaning a bit again; I guess my training has been a bit all-over-the-place this month, so it's no wonder really. I may just go back to all my runs being 11:30-12:00 recovery pace for a week, which tends to see off any niggles without the need to stop. Also need to turf out the compression socks for bedtimes again. I swear by them, whether it's just psychological or not!
Maybe my June goal just needs to be a bit of stability and regularity. Hmm...
Also, I'm going running shoe shopping next week! My current ones are getting towards the 350mile mark and my PT last year recommended I introduce new shoes gradually, as I ended up injured last time I went from well-worn to brand new shoes with no phasing in or out. I cannot wait, even if my bank balance doesn't quite agree
