Any good shakes or smoothies to keep you going through your workouts or after?

If there were diet pills or drinks that worked there wouldn't be an "obesity crisis".0

For sure, not looking for a quick fix....... just something with nutritional value that helps people keep energy and workout.... smoothies, shakes, teas, idk0

Calories matter. Everything else is window dressing or a waste of your time and/or money.
Get your calories in versus calories out right and you will hit your goals.
SlimFast: From the people who have used it on here it seems to be difficult to sustain over a long period of time and even when used in short bursts people report weight gain when replacing the shakes with meals.
Green Tea: Similar to coffee and black tea - the stimulation effects are minimal and certainly make little to zero difference for weight loss. If you like them, go ahead and drink them, but do not fall for the false assumption that they improve or drive weight loss.0 -
I have a job where I can't leave my desk. I drink FitMiss shakes from Amazon with some PB2 powder and bring a salad and that gets me through.1

I have found a very nutritional one that my dr, trainer and obgyn were impressed with, I don't want to name drop so I will pm you.2

The one you sell right?Gerbsxyng412 wrote: »Yes tried it... not a very good product . If you are interested in a MLM just do research on what is the top 5 and talk to your dr. I eat better and still use health and wellness products and yes most folks say MLM is a scam, I an involved with a health and wellness company. I will not preach about it on here. I used to take 12 supplements/vitamins for my hair, skin, immune system, acne and now I take just 1 kind that covers it all plus some.7 -
Unless you are doing multi-hour endurance cardio then what you eat/drink during or after a workout has an insignificant impact on your workout compared to your overall diet.
Focus on your nutrition as a whole and avoid an excessive deficit to maintain energy and performance.1 -
I have an Atkins after I exercise on the drive home. It is about 4 hours since I ate lunch and I have a 45 minute drive so it's an easy snack.1

I'd like to point out that this thread was originally called "Magic Pills and Potions?" and was originally a question specifically about SlimFast and that type of shake and Green Teas and the like. OP changed the title and content of the first post after several replies had been posted.
Based on the new question I agree with @sijomial that pre-and post work-out shakes are not necessary - except in the most extreme of exercisers (and even then the effects are minimal) - if the rest of the diet is spot on.
Quoted for emphasis...Focus on your nutrition as a whole and avoid an excessive deficit to maintain energy and performance.

Honestly - people if you have nothing positive or supportive to say don't bother replying - OP only asked for advise ! I'm doing slim fast - but I'm dieting too! My friend is using protein shakes and gym work outs - USN from Holland and barrat uk it was recommended by her trainer x3

Enny is that PhD woman shakes?0

I use ideal shake and meal replacement bars. They taste good and fill me up. I have a shake in the am before my workout because with getting the kids off to school I don't have time to prepare myself a healthy meal. Then I have a bar during the day between lunch and dinner when I'm on the run.1

Yes, OP asked for advice on an open internet forum. You cannot dictate who can and cannot reply to a question. Nor can you dictate what kind of reply people should give.
I tried shakes before/after workouts. I also tried them as a meal replacement. They did not work for me. They did not give me a boost or any extra umph! I was also hungry 30 minutes later! I also found that I was not willing to give up that many calories for a shake. I would rather enjoy food. Plus, I was getting adequate protein through my diet. I am currently trying to lose weight but keep as much of my lean muscle mass as possible.
I do take BCAA's during my workouts.
My husband will have a protein shake after his workout. He is a scrawny man and is trying to gain muscle. He needs a lot of protein a day and it is hard for him to get that amount of protein through his diet. He needs to supplement.

Our peeps at the hospital use Unjury. I use a vegan organic and I can't remember the name but It is from walmart. it doesn't mix well requires a blender but the specs are great it is sweet and using the vanilla I put in frozen strawberries. I tried eas chocolate and couldn't get past the protein texture.
*its called Orgain the one I use0 -
For energy and a fun taste, I use water flavoring with caffeine. Personally, I like to push hard and the slight sweetness is a great pick-me-up that makes me smiles as I squat and look forward to the next sip IsoNatural or a Quest bar afterwards if no real food is available. I've also heard good things about a supplement named "Spark".0

I'm guessing that this comment was aimed at @sijomial and me. But I will point out again that the comments about SlimFast were because the OP specifically asked about SlimFast in her original post. Once several of the replies were in she then changed the title of the thread and the content of her first post.
Further comments about "smoothies and shakes" and whether they are required were given in relationship to the edited question:Any good shakes or smoothies to keep you going through your workouts or after?
The comments by @sijomial and I are IMHO valid for that question and can be summarised as
"If your diet is on-point you don't need smoothies or shakes".
If you like them, sure go for it, but they are not needed if your food is providing you with sufficient energy in your preferred macro split.
Whilst the OP only asked for recommendations (in her edited version of the first post - she did ask about the validity of weight loss products such as SlimFast and Green Tea it in the original) it is valid and useful to her,, and anyone else reading this post, to see that smoothies and shakes are not a requirement for gym goers.

In what way is your comment positive or supportive?
OP asked for advice, people gave advice.
You on the other hand addressed a mini rant directed at "people" and told a little anecdote about you and your friend.
Pot / kettle / black.
A tip for you: if you want to debate with, or identify who you are directing your comments to, then quote them or add their profile name. Otherwise it really does come across as a pointless rant.8 -
The only shake I use is whey blended with half a banana, peanut butter, and my morning cup of coffee. I don't like working out if I've eaten recently, but I'd probably get too lightheaded if I did it fasted. So this is what gets me through a hard workout, without vomiting or passing out.
But I don't know exactly what your original question is. My shake is kinda high calorie, not intended to make me lose weight, accelerate metabolism or do any other things that some shakes are (falsely) advertised to do.1 -

I'm new on this forum I don't know how it works yet! Appologies if I said something wrong - I just read the first reply saying there's no such thing as a magic tablet or shake - I didn't read that the original post was changed - I felt sorry for OP as I thought she just wanted to know which shakes were good for working out ! I don't understand why I'm pot kettle black! I just answered to say my friend is using high protein shakes to help with her work outs - I am using slim fast as a calorie controlled diet to loose a few pounds. Sorry to anyone who was offended - I just thought the comment was unfair0 -

That's fine - no worries and certainly no offense taken, it's just the Interwebz after all.
It is very unusual for a post (and title) to be changed.
After a while on here you will realise there's an awful lot of misinformation about supplements (protein shakes in
particular) and their relative importance or correct usage.
A lot of that spread by trainers and people in gyms! Also people see "the big guys" in gyms glugging protein shakes and think it's the protein shake doing the work rather than the workout. If only it was that easy.....

Look at your overall dietary intake.
Very few people really need to supplement for "gym workouts".1 -

If you like gingerbread, Oxygen magazine has a recipe for a delicious Gingerbread cookie shake: 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1/2 scoop chocolate protein powder, 1/2 cup vanilla enriched Rice Dream, 1/2 cup vanilla yogurt, 1/2 tsp ginger, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1 T molasses, and ice cubes. Blend and drink ! Mmmmmm
I also like a Creamsicle, which is a cup of orange juice (I get the Healthy kids kind with extra calcium and vitamins), half a scoop of vanilla protein powder (I’ve been getting spirulina), and a lowfat or Greek vanilla (or plain or coffee) yogurt. Blend and drink.
The Key Lime Protein Shake is blended with the juice of a lime, 2 tsp lime zest, 1 scoop of vanilla whey protein powder, 1 T coconut, a cup of milk, and 1-2 packets of Stevia (optional).
The Chocolate Maple Shake is made by blending a cup of milk, 3 T protein powder, 1 T cocoa powder, and 1 tsp maple syrup
Last but not least, for a change, I blend a cup of orange juice (I get the Healthy kids kind with extra calcium and vitamins), half a scoop of chocolate protein powder (I’ve been getting spirulina), and a lowfat coffee yogurt. Also good!

I use PhD diet whey. Comes in a variety of flavours. But i tend to go for the Belgian choc mixed with water & then sometimes add a banana, strawberries or peanut butter. I use it as a bfast meal replacement if I'm working an early...(who wants bfast at 6am??) And if I do an hr weights session or a hard spin class I'll have it post workout. There's so many protein shakes/drinks to choose from. I tried a few before I found PhD, I won't use anything else. Slim fast & juice plus didn't agree with me. Always search on line for a good price aswell. PhD is twice the price in Tesco compared to Amazon/eBay. Good luck xx0

Remember that what's important is your overall calorie intake. You could be negating your entire workout by downing a shake. Have some caffeine if you need a boost. I like amino energy, but I'm sure the effect (besides the caffeine) is mostly placebo. But, it only has 5 calories and I like the sweetness.
I see far too many people chugging a vitamin water on the treadmill, not realizing they need to RUN a mile or two just to burn that off.2 -
Ha ha I did change the post cuz I thought it was confusing. I named it pills and potions as a joke and then noticed people didn't get it. So I really did just want to know about shakes, drinks, suppliments that help with working out and keeping energy. I never have used any and just did diet and exercise. Dipping my toe to see what people use, what works, if I should try any. @stealthHealth @sijomial @lauraemily84 sorry for confusion! ! Not trying to piss anyone off lol.
Thank you all for advice! !0 -

I posted the first reply, which I can't change now, but it was in response to the OPs original question that specifically asked for suggestions for ”pills and magic potions". Those were the words used. I didn't expect to have the question changed after I answered it. I wasn't trying to be rude or mean. It was an honest response to the original question.0
