Making unsolicited, blanket statements about what others are doing wrong, without even specifying who you are referring to, is is never a good idea OP....
While I think there are a lot of people on MFP who could be eating more calories and losing weight, but making comments that 1300 or 1500 is "nothing a day" is a bit of a stretch. For petite, sedentary women, 1300-1500 is an appropriate net, or maybe even gross goal, if someone isn't exercising much.
I'm 5'2 and my maintenance cals are 2200, but I'm a bit of an anomaly because I'm very active.4 -
What is with voicing what works for yourself that drives the fitness world crazy. Do what you want I'm not here to stop you from eating 1300 calories a day. I simply said it is disturbing to me. Because 1500 or 1300 calories is nothing a day. Just my opinion. Everyone gets so offended so easy. I to need help to lose and always look for what might have worked with others. You do you. Just throwing my 2 cents and experience in.
Thanks for giving a range. I delete people who are eating 300-800/day unless they are medically supervised. But that's my personal issues. I actually stopped looking in diaries because it's none of my business.
I can lose on 1600/day, but I need to workout a lot. Perhaps realize that us older shorter women can't meet your high standards and keep your eyes on your own plate.7 -

I lost 60lbs on a VLCD - I was on top of the world. I met a guy and we fell in love and went out for eats/drinks just about every night. It took a while for me to gain all the weight plus some back but I did eventually. Now I am losing the weight in what people consider 'the healthy way' and while I am super impatient, I still feel like I am going to be able to keep the weight off easier this time. Who knows what my future holds but I believe I will have better habits and relationship with my body overall to maintain my new weight when I reach it.4

Given that you are a 200lb man and the majority of individuals who would be eating this way are not 200lb men the reason for your post escapes me. It would be the equivalent of a petite female creating a post with a tittle something like "Anyone who eats over 3000 calories a day is a big fat disgusting slob" and then trying to justify it later.
If you can not relate with a perspective because you are not in the 'group' of people who can relate to that perspective then posting about it is really not constructive.

For me, 1500 Gross/NET is losing less than 1lb per week (400 deficit)....and I have 50lbs to lose. 2. Agree. OP, I am still not understanding the point of your post. You seem to think most of us aren't eating enough. What calorie goal would you give a 5'4" woman who lifts 3x a week and runs a few miles 2x a week? Hint: It's nowhere near 3000 calories a day.2 -

I'm a 5'3 female and i maintain on 1,600 on non-workout days and 1,800 on workout days.
In addition, i have hypothyroidism.
If i want to lose a pound a week i have to eat just under 1,100 calories. I'm just sayin' you can't make blanket statements as a big man. You haven't the slightest clue how much it sucks to HAVE to eat so little to maintain body weight.5 -

My calorie goal to maintain is 1,460 if I am sedentary for the day. I typically eat more because I move around a bit -- but if I wasn't, 1,500 calories wouldn't be "nothing" for me. It would be slightly above what I need.0 -

im 5'2 with barely anything to lose. I AM sedentary most days i am in school (getting doctorate) as in 3k steps. my BMR is only 1350 and on those days my tdee is like 1500 l. Eating 1200 calories only gives me a 300 deficit which is nothing. Ps my calories and diet is non of your business or concern.. worry bout yo self.3

I think next time it would probably be easier just to ask about it then if you want to understand it, because there weren't any questions at all about it in your op, just that it disturbs you, and then some advice on why not to do it. I would maybe even ask the people who's diaries you went into why that is the diet they chose.

Unless you know how many calories a person burns you can't reliably know how many calories they should be eating. I moan about how little 1200 calories is all the time, but I can't deny that my body doesn't lose weight if I eat more. Better to accept it than continue on the overweight train.

1200 calories a day is FAR from a "low calorie" diet, and is for many people, a normal daily diet.1 -

if he is qualified to help people with their diets then they doesn't need to ask why some "eat so little". pretty simple concept for those who have low bmr's and tdee's. One does not offer help with semi insults and expect positive results. I am one of those who has to eat 1200 calories on my sedentary days and it sucks, but thats my body. I have a masters degree in nutrition and know what I'm doing. Not everyone who eats so little is suffering from an eating disorder.4 -
Well a couple thoughts. Some people just don't finish their diaries. But, also I agree with you. This is something I have really struggled with. Even though my head knows that I need to eat more, it's just hard to do it sometimes. I just bumped my calories up recently and if it weren't for the support here I don't think I could have done it. I think my food/calorie issues have held me back from reaching my goals and I think you are totally right. I had my son hide the scale from me and I'm not going to be looking at it for a while. I need to get my mind off the numbers on the scale and focused on my goals and eating what my body needs.

You are trying to understand why not everyone can eat 3000 calories like you and still be in a deficit??
Umm, because some of us are smaller, older, less active and female gender.

I believe I recently read somewhere that "starvation mode" has been proven to be a myth. I'll try and look back where I read that.0 -
So, @jester13, do you now understand that you were wrong and that for many people, 1300-1500 calories a day is not at all "very low calories" and might indeed be their maintenance amount? We're not all young, active 200-lb males and so our needs can be very, very different to yours.
If I ate 3000 calories a day I'd gain like 2 pounds a week, that's well over my maintenance even if I'm running 10k a day. Smaller people need less food, it's not really that complicated.3 -
