Aug 13 - 408 km cycling (1485 min) ... no, that's not a typo. My husband and I rode a 400 km randonnee starting at 7 am on Saturday 13 August and finishing 24 hours and 45 minutes later. I have the story almost ready to post to my blog, but essentially ...

We've been training for this for the past two months and chose this particular one because it fit in our schedules and was relatively flat. We started strongly, but at the 200 km point, I broke a tooth (the tooth was in questionable condition to begin with) which made the remaining 200 km a little more challenging than I had hoped. Breathing through my mouth was painful, so I was reduced to breathing through my nose. And eating was painful, so I ran rather low on energy. I was hoping to finish within 24 hours, but I guess an extra 45 minutes wasn't too bad. :)
We rolled into the start location at 7:45 am on Sunday.

    Aug 15 - 0.5 km walking (7 min) ... airport.
Aug 16 - 3 km walking (35 min) ... to the beach and back to stretch things out.

Back from vacation last weekend but couldn't get on the bike for commute until today.
    MTD: approximately 76
Month goal: 100, should be able to hit it next week.

Did almost 40 (39.8) today so my goal was got. Commuting tomorrow and the remainder of the month is gravy. And my butt is sore from today's long (for me) ride. My big accomplishment was washing the bike and lubing the chain before I put the bike away. A big section of today's ride was on gravel and there was a lot of dust on the bottom half of the bike...

@Ohhim Sorry to read about your crash. I hope that by now, everything is healed!

Congratulations to everyone who reached their goals!

I'm getting a pro at changing tires ;-) I wanted to take my trekking bike for a trip to the supermarket on Saturday, and discovered I had a flat rear tire (again!). I bought some Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires a few weeks ago, which are supposed to have great puncture protection; this seemed a good opportunity to finally install them. Then I took the tires I'd just removed to replace the ancient brittle tires on the dust-covered old bike in the cellar; maybe I'll fix the chain of that one as well, clean it a bit and try to sell it.
In the end, I didn't actually ride any of the bikes over the weekend, so the last rides I have to add are

    8/23/2016 18.1km commute
8/25/2016 25.7km because it was too hot to run
    8/26/2016 17.6km commute + BBQ
    ---
246.5km of 200km August goal done

No particular goal this month apart from getting my old Roubaix back on the road - it was crunched by a myopic car driver last year. New forks and wheels on order to make it my "fast bike". Felt I hadn't spent enough money on my hobby this year!
My wife may not agree with my assessment.....

Also doing a little experiment by incorporating leg work back into my strength training, I don't tend to do any weights for my legs during the cycling season but would like to add some size and strength to my legs. Doing it at the start of the week so I get recovery time before my weekend rides.
Weights Monday and Wednesday and straight back to maxing out the leg press and leg curl machines despite not using them for 4 (?) months.

Tuesday - 21.1 virtual miles on eSpinning bike
Thursday - 24.2 virtual miles on eSpinning bike - time trial mode.
Saturday - 45.9 miles fairly fast.
Sunday - 43.4 miles, really hot, humid and windy.

    Week 1 total = 134.6 miles.

Monday - "legs" in the gym. Jumped the weights up significantly.

Tuesday - squeezed in a short evening ride, 28.1 miles. Got a 5th place on a Strava segment, fast but "bumpy" ride.

Wednesday - more "legs" in the gym. Five days on the trot working my legs - feels like more than enough! Who put my quads through a mangle?

Thursday - gentle recovery ride (6.5 virtual miles) on a trainer in the gym to flush some blood through tired muscles.

Friday - Planned to do my first "permanent route" Audax today (solo ride not an organised event) - 204km / 126 mile circular route across the South Downs and Salisbury Plain. Day got off to a bad start - short / poor sleep and a splitting headache. Then loads of things to sort out at home meant a late start driving down to Winchester. Two horrendous traffic jams on the way and instead of a morning start I didn't get on the bike until 2pm. No chance to complete the course in the time before sunset and didn't fancy unlit, unfamiliar country roads after dark. So just had a taster - drop dead gorgeous scenery but not a fast route, constant changes of elevation rather than really big climbs, very hard to get a rhythm. 69 miles at a "touring speed" of 14.4mph, 3,960' of elevation. I will have to go back and do it properly.

Saturday - legs got a rest!

Sunday - local roads, 50 miler. Strength training seems to be having an impact - legs feeling very tired but I'm setting good times on uphill stretches and climbs without feeling like I'm really pushing hard. Got a big PR improvement (+2mph) on one long (8 minute) gentle rise.

    Week 2 total = 153.6
    Monthly total = 288.2
Monday - more legs included in my strength work, paying dividends on the roads but it does add to fatigue.
Tuesday - late ride on a perfect summer's evening, Garmin went to night mode just as I arrived home. 29.8 miles.
Wednesday - more strength work, more leg presses and curls.
Thursday - Rest day! What a strange feeling.
Friday - attempted 200 watt average for an hour on WattbikePro trainer. Just missed target at 196w - too soon after dinner and was in danger of seeing my dinner again.... 22.8 virtual miles.
Saturday - Strength work but just upper body and core work. Legs got a rest.
Sunday - Nice ride out to Surrey countryside, went for a mainly woodland route to try and shelter a little from a strong and blustery wind. 57.9 miles.

    Week 3 total - 110.7
    Monthly total = 398.9 miles

(New forks finally arriving next week but now the workshop is booked up until September! Curses.....)

Slightly extended cycling/exercise week 4 due to the Monday Bank Holiday in England....

Monday - Heavy lifting in a circuit training style including leg presses and leg curls.
Tuesday - Hill intervals on eSpinning bike. 20 virtual miles.
Wednesday - Strength training including legs.
Thursday - a bit of cross training, hour on Cybex ARC trainer (posh elliptical).
Friday - Got the hybrid out for a change, 19.3 miles.
Saturday - Quick 33.8 miles. Wind was blowing from the atypical direction so good for Strava PRs, bad for a headwind on the way home.
Sunday - 4 miles to/from the gym for more strength training (legs got a break though)
Monday - Lovely day so steady ride out into the countryside, 64.7 miles.

    Week 4 total - 141.8 miles
    Monthly total - 540.7

Got a non-biking neighbor out on a short cruiser ride around the neighborhood and some neighboring islands last night before dinner. Mostly recovered otherwise, but my left hand is still store (as those cuts are slower to heal), so debating my mileage plans for the next 2 days, especially as a tropical storm/depression moves through the area. If things clear up by Wednesday, I may attempt another century (as I'd really like to nail my on-bike raceday nutrition plan before I start tapering), but will play that by ear.

Where there is a goal, there is a way ... 1031km, with one day to spare

800km is within striking distance (strike off...), 900km will need some pushing (done...), 1000km is a big nah (hmm no)

@BeckyCMcClinton - Awesome job nailing your goal for the month!!
@cpanus - Almost at double! Nice work.
@narak_lol - Congrads on your megametre!

Just going for 35 tomorrow to get to 800 miles as the tropical storm moving through the area hasn't been cooperating with my plans to bike outside the past 2 days. If that ride is killed, I may just hook up the trainer (now that I have a power meter) for some interval sweatfests.

That was the month, that was - absolutely trounced my best ever month for miles (by 129) and hours in the saddle (by over 8). That's likely to stand for a while - don't expect to beat that before Spring, but I'm very satisfied with that as a month.

I'm going to push my annual target up to 2500, which gives me about 12 weeks to do 800 miles, which should be doable.

    Finished the month off with:
Tuesday - 9.4 miles on my hybrid just enjoying a beautiful sunny evening with a gentle trundle alongside the Thames past Hampton Court Palace.
Wednesday - 4 miles to the gym.

    August Total - 554.1

Back from vacation last weekend but couldn't get on the bike for commute until today.

Two round trips commuting this week to close out the month with something close to 140 miles. September should be better, hoping for 250 at least.

With tropical storms killing my triathlon team group ride this morning, I spent 2 hours at my local team shop's pain cave for a session racing the ironman Augusta 70.3 course on their tacx trainer. The session was interesting as my power numbers were well above what my pedal-based power meter was telling me (so we adjusted with a torque wrench, which may help). That was pretty reassuring given what I've seen at the gym before vs. what I've seen on rides so far.

The trainer crashed mid-way out on the 56 mile course, so they reset it mid-way through and I ended up biking the return trip + 14 miles outbound for a 40 mile ride. At my easy heart rate range, I was putting out an average of 240 watts, so my initial guess of an FTP of 280-300 watts is likely accurate. I guess I'll see how my garmin vector does on my next few rides, and either return, or send in for service if it doesn't cooperate now that it has been properly torqued.

    8/3 - 20.09 miles
    8/6 - 65.49 miles
    8/9 - 6.87 miles
8/11 - 3.29 Had breakin a week ago, been busy contacting neighbors, tracking things down. Not much time for riding this week. Got kids yesterday but things not over yet.
8/16 - 3.30 miles shortened by the rain. Just won't stop!
    8/17 - 16.52 miles
    8/23 - 12.05 miles
    8/29 - 13.02 miles
    8/31 - 10.41 miles

With the break in and dealing with that, and the rain over 9 inches this month the worst riding mileage this year for the month. At least for a warm weather month.

I did some walking on August 29 and 30 but my records are at work.

I haven't been feeling well for a little while, and on Tuesday night I developed a rather serious, extensive (head to toe) rash. Went to the Dr on Wednesday and again this evening. Looks like this rash is a viral exanthem quite possibly loosely associated with measles. I'm going for bloodwork tomorrow to check things further.

Meanwhile, no exercise for me. And I'm not actually sure when I'll be able to exercise again.

I had a long ride planned for Saturday ... that will not happen now.
