Picking on Pop-tarts - Dirty Food?

I like reading the discussions about clean vs dirty foods- that seems to be the hot topic right now. I keep seeing Pop-tarts mentioned. That is nearly everyone's go to "dirty" food, but some people love them so much they slap some ice cream between two of them and make a sandwich. Look it up, there's some good food porn pics on that topic.

So without starting a debate, just for fun, what is the "dirtiest" food you can think of, not pesticide wise, but processed. Mine is those fruit or pudding pies sold in waxed paper at the "bread store". My mom would buy them and try to get me to eat them, but they tasted FAKE.

I would eat a Pop-tart over one of those any day- preferably the unfrosted strawberry kind, lightly toasted with the doughy corners picked off.

Pop-tarts and ice cream sounds so good! My dirty food would be those Pecan Pies in the baking section at Target, they have so many ingredients, mostly preservatives! I would take a piece of that pie, slather some ice cream on it then top it off with chocolate fudge and some nuts. I haven't eaten anything like that in forever but if I was going to do something dirty that's how it would go down.

My aunt can't make anything without sticking a cube of butter in it. Then she does stuff like pour sugar into corn, while it's cooking on the stove.

I absolutely hate seeing perfectly good food, slathered in things that in excess, aren't good for our bodies. Especially when there's so many ways to make veggies, meat and whole ingredients like brown rice without a lot of calories. That's worse then food you expect to be high in fat and sugar IMO.

  • The dirtiest food I can think of is Twinkies - they have enough artificial preservatives to survive a nuclear holocaust.

Another really dirty food is hot dogs - they are made up of the leftover bits of the animal that no one will eat or buy on its own.

No, I understand perfectly. However, if you buy a deep friend snickers bar, you know exactly what you're getting. I really don't have a problem with that. Junk food is junk food, deep fried, carb laden, sugar and/or sodium infested junk food, not pretending to be anything else.

So what I find the "dirtiest" is the stuff you expect to be healthy. The stuff that completely takes you by surprise. The menu item you pick because it sounds the healthiest and it has twice the calories as the hamburger you turned down.

Rich chocolate mousse cake (had 2 slices of one last week cause I felt like it and was estimated to be over 2000 calories with 100+ grams of sugar) topped with meringue and choc coated honeycomb.

I'm an IIFYM person and it totally blew my macros out for the day. Totally worth it though ;D

Take one mars bar, cover it in batter, and deep fry till the batter is crisp and golden and the inside is melted. Then eat. This is apparently the national dish of Scotland.

Pop Tart fires are not unheard of, especially when the toaster does not eject as scheduled.

Here's a time series photo of the phenomenon, courtesy the website "Strawberry Pop Tart Blow Torches."

The website further describes Strawberry Pop Tarts as a "cheap and inexpensive source of incendiary devices" and "flames can reach 10-18 inches in height" under the right conditions.

I make Heart Attack Brownies - a triple chocolate fudge brownie mix (with over 1.5lbs of lindt chocolate in the batter) marbled 50/50 with a cheesecake batter and baked. I've never worked out the calories, but I was on Weight Watchers at the time and the batch came in at around 350 propoints. That was 10 days food for me at the time.

no, you're thinking of HAGGIS! Or a Scotch Egg...mmm...scotch egg..followed by a deep fried Mars Bar, which, according to legend, did indeed originate in Scotland. There's a reason the Scottish aren't known for their great health..haha.

Oh, now you have ruined me on the State Fair of Texas - I thought all deep fried anything came from the State Fair of Texas... which I enjoy my utlimate dirty food - the super deep fried Corn Dog!

    Red velvet for me please!:drinker:

Why haven't I heard of any of these flavours here in Canada?!?!

I have yet to see Red Velvet, but I saw a coupon for peanut butter ones and had to buy them for the kids and hubby. My husband loves Reese's cereal also. That crap leaves a fat residue on the top of your mouth when you eat it.

Talking about cereal, what about Lucky Charms? My sons' school had that on the breakfast menu- seriously. There are a hundred other options, Cheerios, Kix, even Frosted Flakes that would be healthier than candy cereal. They also had doughnuts and you guessed it- Pop-tarts.

I totally relate with the poster who has an aunt throwing sugar into everything, I hated chili growing up b/c my mom made it sweet. She could also take about anything including veggies and bread it and fry it.. I also remember lots of frozen burritos, Hamburger Helper, and lots of excellent homemade candy. Basically I started out a skinny child and ballooned up, is there any wonder?

I try to stress to my sons those Pop-tarts are treats, in no way are they to be considered an actual food, they are like dessert. They also beg me for Lunchables, I have tried making them read the nutrition label, but they don't care, all the other kids pack them.

I had to break my husband's Little Debbie obsession when we first got married. We were grocery shopping just last week and there was a huge center display of various dirty things and I told him to get his eyes off those honey buns and he was like how did you know what I was looking at!? After 13 years he still looks at Little Debbie- the cheater.

My kids didn't like the peanut butter ones (I didn't try one) but I love the s'mores flavor...I don't consider them dirty, but they have too much sugar for me--I'd rather get my sugar from fruit.
