Protein Bar Questions

I keep my protein bars in the refrigerator because I think they taste better cold. Sometimes I eat one with some fat-free/lite cool whip, and/or with a little peanut butter. I prefer the Atkins Cookies N Creme bars. I don't see any reason not to have one 2- 3 hours before bed, but I would think it's better to have them earlier in the day.
Oh, yeah - I forgot. My wife loves the Chocolate Deluxe, heated up in the microwave for 5-10 seconds with a little peanut butter. I haven't tried it, but it sounds TREMENDOUS.

1. Sure. Nutrient timing can play a part in one's nutrition, but it should only be considered well after calories, macronutrients, and micronutrients have been prioritized.
2. Cookies and Cream was my favorite, though several of the flavors were good. Heat in a microwave either for 7 seconds on high or 15 seconds at 50% power.
3. Costco recently came out with protein bars similar in texture to Quest bars (under their Kirkland brand). They're less than half the cost of Quest bars, have as much or more protein than any of them (21g), and have lots of fiber (15g). They come in two solid flavors, which may be a downside if you have a psychological need for variety. I don't, and reach for Kirkland every time, but many people get upset and irritable if they don't have lots of choices.1 -
I love the coconut cashew quest bars! Also delish are the chocolate chip cookie dough and white chocolate raspberry.0

GNC LEAN BARS are pretty good & comparable to the quest bars. Not as many flavors that is the only downside but i like the chocolate chip & brownie flavors anyways0

Chocolate mint is by far my favorite. It tastes like Girl Scout Cookies (Thin mints!) and doesn't need to be heated up. Second place are the chocolate chip cookie dough and s'mores, each heated about 10-15 seconds. Amazing. Last night I tried the lemon cream pie and was shocked that I love it. The double chocolate chunk is also good. I absolutely hated the coconut cashew and chocolate peanut butter. I threw each of them out after a bite.1

I can answer #2 easily; S'mores.....all the way. I've also had Cookies and Creme too but it was ok. Quest bars were better in the day before they changed the ingredients. It use to be Whey protein listed first before the milk protein. Still love them and eat them when I get a chance.
#3. I've had Think Thin; those aren't bad. 20g of protein and are a good price. I try to stick with the powder protein because it feels like it does more justice based on having a full stomach. But bars would be my go to if I was low on cash.
#1 I never had an issue having a protein bar a couple hrs before bed. If you are hungry, I would suggest cottage cheese. There's an article on bodybuilding.com for those that do night snacking that are beneficial for your health and exercise.

I LOVE the White Chocolate Raspberry bar from Quest, but I only eat them occasionally. They are made with sucralose, which I like to avoid. Coscto has a kirkland brand of the quest bar in the chocolate chip and brownie one. I think they taste identical and they have better ingredients.1

My favorite qwest bar is the s'mores, though I like the cookies and cream too, haven't tried any others. I don't heat mine up, never even thought to try that. Lol. but s'mores is good on it's own. Super satisfying. 3 hours before bed should be fine, though maybe if you have problems with it maybe have it late afternoon. If I'm hungry within 2-3 hours of bed I have an Ostrim beef jerky or turkey jerky or whatever kind I feel like. You can get those at GNC, they are my favorite, sometimes I pair them with a qwest bar and that's my lunch.0

My rule of thumb with protein bars is simple. just because its a health bar doesn't mean its right for you. Look at the label and think of it as another food source. i can eat a higher calorie bar because my body has a huger caloric need. if you are trying to lose then pay attention to the calories and carbs.2

I'm a huge Quest fan, so it's hard to pin my favourite down. I've tried all of them with the exception of Key Lime and Cheesecake (and maybe one or two others). My favourites right now are Double Chocolate Chunk and S'mores. The mint chocolate chip and cookies-and-cream are close seconds. I even like the apple pie and berry ones. Go figure. The peanut butter ones and the cinnamon roll are kinda meh.
I'll eat them for postworkout snacks or when I'm feeling sick and need to get my macros but don't want to eat lots of food. Or if I'm on a trip and don't have access to enough food to fit my macros.0 -
ONE BARS cinnamon roll flavor. that and quest cookie dough are life.0

I've tried pretty much every brand I've ever seen for protein bars. Quest is rather average, maybe a notch above average. For that particular brand, Cookies & Cream is my preference.
MP Combat Crunch is by far #1 for me. Cinnamon Twist, Chocolate Cake, and Chocolate Peanut Butter are notable.
I recently tried the brand B UP and rather liked the bars I bought. This brand looks like it has the highest fibre content (20 g typically) in this category.
I dig MuscleTech Mission1 bars.
Pretty good, but not notably so - FitJoy, Oh Yeah One, Quest.
Meh - Power Crunch, Robert Irvine's Fitcrunch, Ahhhnald's bar (whatever it's called), Think Thin tastes ok but has mediocre macros/calorie.
Pure Protein is good but provides very little fibre compared to the others listed. I see they have a product called "Pure Protein Plus" that does offer decent fibre (15ish g), but I haven't tried this yet. If it tastes as good as the regular bars, then I'd move them up.
Awful, awful, awful and should never be consumed by humans ever - BPI Protein Bars. I don't know how these ever left some taste tester's approval.
One note I'd like to add is that many of these products are cost prohibitive from a brick & mortar store. I buy in bulk online from whoever has a great sale and it makes a big difference. If you walk into a GNC, the Combat Crunch bars will cost at least $30 USD (whatever that converts to in your currency) but I end up paying around $20 a box, including s&h.5 -
I really like Questbars as well - Smore's, peanut butter and jelly and cookies & cream are my favorite. I've never heated them up as I like them room temp. Interested to try a few mentioned here though!0

I found one called fitjoy,they are a bit pricey and only found them online but they have 20g of protein and 13g of fiber. they are really good too. also a pretty good one is the birthday cake flavor by fit crunch.0

I like the Kirkland Protein Bars which some have said are similar to Quest Bars but less costly. Sold at Costco.1

I am on a paleo diet, so I am careful to eat that kind of protein bar. I love Caveman bars, particularly blueberry. I also really like RX bars, and Kit's Organic Cashew Bars (which come from Clif). I eat them as a meal, mostly breakfast, not as a snack.0

Robert Irvine's Fit Crunch bars are the best protein bars I've had and I feel like I've tried them all. My favorite is the Cookie Dough.0

Costco is a bulk seller. As far as I know, you can only get them in the 20 count twin packs (40 bars total).0 -
White Chocolate/Raspberry and Cookies and Cream quest bars are good, but I love the Daryl's All Natural Caramel Salted Peanut. Yum!0

Id recommend a casein type protein at night along with a healthy fat item (avocado). I say this assuming your eating it at bed time as a means to stave off Catobolism while your sleeping, but I may be incorrect in that assumption.
For me a protein bar is for "on the go". I often eat one on the way to the gym if I hadn't had anything to eat in the 2-3 hours prior to my workout as to provide some fuel. Sometimes I eat them at work if I get hunger pangs. Most are loaded with alcohol sugars (or some sugar)0 -

Personally, my eating schedule is wack because I have a long commute, long work day and spend hours in the gym. I usually eat two protein bars x day because they're easy to eat on-the-go and aren't too much to eat right before or after the gym. I eat dinner around 9PM and go to bed at 11PM, so if you want to eat a protein bar then, I don't see a problem with it. I know tons of people who are totally against pre-bedtime eating, but with a crazy schedule, it's impossible for me to NOT eat late and it hasn't caused me any harm so far. A protein bar 2-3 hours before bed is a better alternative than anything else I could imagine getting munched on at night (i.e. ice cream, chips, etc.)
Also, as for Quest Bars - Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Cookies & Cream are the best. S'mores and Mint Chocolate Chunk are good too. I never heat them up though. As for other brands, try OhYeah ONE Bars Birthday Cake - the rest of their flavors are also amazing. These taste great when chilled.0 -

- I do, I don't think the times matter but I'm not doing fasting or anything special. I eat them mostly when I need to get a protein boost and am feeling hungry.

- Double chocolate chunk and the smores flavors are my TOP top favorites and are a must try imo. The oreo looking ones are ok. The peanut butter and jelly flavor.. yeah don't bother, lol! I don't heat them up but their IG page shows people baking with them and such, so it's possible.
Other than Quest, what are your favorite protein bars?
- Oh Yeah One bars are low carb and are very good, although they taste much sweeter than Quest bars. Their birthday cake flavor has sprinkles!
Costco sells their own brand (Kirkland) of protein bars but be aware the texture is VERY different from Quest bars. They almost have a chewy/taffy texture. They taste fine though. You get a big box of around 18 bars or so and the flavors are chocolate chip and brownie.

Agree. I think the Zone Perfect are definitely the best tasting.
Quest bars aren't awful, but they are absurdly expensive.0 -
