Scariest Movie Ever

The first movie that scared me was the original Poltergeist. I had a clown doll just like the one in the movie, and after I watched it, I gave the doll to my younger sisters...
Oh, The Shining freaked me out as a kid too. Not because of Jack Nicholson's character, but the Grady twins. To this day, I dislike children that speak in unison.
I just recently saw The Witch and found that very unnerving/creepy.0 -

Hands down, the original Exorcist movie.

The original Exorcist did nothing for me. I watched it by myself in the dark and... applesauce.
It had no impact on me at all. none.
I suppose I can see how others found it frightening. *shrug0 -
I feel the same way about The Exorcist, Motorsheen. Ho hum. Also Halloween. That movie is boring as *kitten*.0

Right? All of those teenage scream fest movies just don't do it for me.
If others like them, great; no worries. Have fun with them.
The genre that strikes a nerve for me is: Japanese Horror.
There are films out there like the original 'Ring' and 'Audition' that are very good and a bit more cerebral than your bog standard slasher flick.

It is being remade as we type. I think the new Pennywise is going to be much creepier. (Huge Stephen King fan here). "Come play with us, we all float down here"0 -

But I also thought Insidious was a creepy movie (that whole "Tip Toe through the Tulps" thing... ~shivers~". The Conjuring (the first one) was awesome...and also Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project.
for 3rd runners up I'd like to add The Boy. It's about a creepy doll...and has a weird plot twist towards the end that makes you be like "WTF is going on?"
If you like zombie movies, 28 Weeks Later freaked me out!
...now I'm considering a horror movie marathon this week....
Wow!
You named all the movies that I think are the scariest,
Except "the boy".hahh
I think these scare me because they can actually happen, also because they involve children, I'm a mom so the thought of this happening to one of my children freaks me out.0 -
Excorcist,
Even though there are newer maybe scarier movies today, this was the first horror movie that scared the **** out of me..
Just brought home conjuring 2, October's my favorite month cause of "31 days of horror" movies on T. V.

If you like Cthulu stuff, The Resurrected is pretty good. Dagon is better but Chris Sarandon puts in a great performance in The Resurrected.0

Evil Dead 2 had some good jump scares.0

don't worry
building a spreadsheet isn't on my to do list.
..... if fact, here is my actual to-do list:
it feels great to check that off, it damn sure does1 -
I think The Exorcist is only scary if you hold certain religious beliefs. I found the whole film spectacularly boring.
The Shining I actually laughed at certain points as it was so ridiculous. Jack Nicholson's worst performance by a country mile... so over-the-top!

Hands down, the original Exorcist movie.Hands down, the original Exorcist movie.
Exorcist 3 was the scariest to me, I havent watched it in like 20 years, but I remember there was a scene in a nursing home, and a little old lady crawled across the ceiling! CREEPY!
The original conjuring gave me nightmares for weeks - I didn't like the 2nd one at all though.
I think one of the scariest movies for me was The Strangers... anything that can happen in real life is horrifying to me!0 -
The horribly slow murderer with an extremely inefficient weapon is the scariest movie ever1

Ooo, Yes! Pet Semetary! The movie was scary, but the book absolutely gave me nightmares! I always read in bed, but that's one book I could NOT finish. I read all but the last 2 chapters..I can relate to the road scene where the baby gets hit. I SWEAR, I have "the road" right in front of my house! We are in the country, but the road in front of us is a major thoroughfare for semi trucks delivering and receiving from the many hog and chicken/turkey farms down the way. There is also a huge chicken processing plant in that path too. The road does indeed use up many animals, just like Mr. Judd Crandall said in the movie....I know there are much scarier movies out these days, but the supernatural and psychological nature of them disturbs me too much to watch them!0

Not really a movie but a fantastic TV mini-series: Dead Set. It's made by the same fellow that does Black Mirror, some of the best, scariest TV around, Charlie Brooker.0
