Easy 5k on the treadmill tonight. Passed the 75 mile goal. Let's see how much more I can get before Halloween.

As a person with IBS, I find it amazing that I've only had to poop during a walk or run only once. And it happened to be on my lunch walk, so the bathroom was just in the building. A few other runs, I've had some bad gas and was tooting all the way. I just know one of these days it's going to happen when I'm in the middle of the Prairie Path with no bathroom in sight on a long run.

@katharmonic - It's funny to hear your reports on your Stella. Sounds like she and my Stella are right at about the same place! Stella keeps getting better and it's so fun to see them progress. I have a hands free leash and it helps a ton! It's great because Stella knows the difference between her "running " and "walking" leashes and that helps too. The leash I have has a bungee like segment in it which is very nice to prevent pulling.

@lporter229 I didn't know you had a Stella also :) I just ordered a hands-free leash that has a bungee segment too. I'm excited to try it.

Today: made my goal for October! Had a group speedwork session tonight and I felt so much better than last week. We did 3 sets of 3-2-1 minute intervals, with 2 minutes recovery between each, plus sprints. I was happy with the pace I was able to maintain and that I increased the pace for the shorter intervals over the longer ones.

It was a cold evening though, so had to layer up - and then take off layers, and then put them back on. Not ready for this cold weather situation yet! I ordered some new gloves and some hand warmers so I'm going to be prepared. I have started to have symptoms of Raynaud's syndrome in my hands and I need to try to keep them from getting too cold. My dad had it terribly, and my older sister does, so I recognized the symptoms when they started recently.

Evening run. Kept it at an easy pace. I tried repeatedly counting to 6 out loud. I found out that in order to keep from breathing over exerted, I breath in while I am slowly counting 1-2-3 then breath out while slowly counting 4-5-6. The pace was about 9 to 9:30 min/mi while I was doing the counting.

Regarding crappy runs, I've been known to carry TP in a ziploc bag on my long runs before, and always to a race. Thankfully have never had to use it though.

Tonight I ran 6.4 miles with Kody on a cold, rainy night. 43F, rain, and a good breeze So I wore a lightweight long sleeve shirt and a super lightweight Brooks jacket but it was too much. After a mile and a half I had to take the jacket off.

While my calf was not an issue, my hamstrings were barking from the get go. I keep meaning to do more to warm up than just brisk walking so tonight I incorporated the lunge matrix and holy cow did that hurt! I think my form was good but just overextended on the step and it felt like my hammies were being pulled out of their sockets. Very tender go the entire run. Now I remember why I quit doing them last year.

Took a rest day yesterday (and fell behind by 140 messages), then did a short run tonight as I got in both a reasonable swim, and a longer easy bike ride today as I commuted to my early voting courthouse to cast my ballot (in case something comes up at the Ironman and I'm stuck out of town after the race).

Still, I'm feeling a touch of lingering soreness in my left quad, even after the rest day, so I just kept my run short and at an easy pace. Hopefully the next 10 days of easy running will have me back to 100% vs. the 98% I'm at right now. Just planning a few more recovery pace runs (9:00+) as from what I'm deducing online, my ironman marathon should be about 35 minutes slower than my standalone PR, provided I pace the bike correctly, which would put me at an 8:25 pace. Given my propensity to negative split, I'm going to just stick with that guideline, than pick it up at the 16 mile mark if all seems to be going well.

    10/1 - 5 miles (w. 5x800s @ 6:00 pace)
    10/2 - 8 miles (finished at MP)
    10/3 - 4 miles
    10/4 - 4 miles
    10/5 - 4 mile
    10/8 - 3 miles
    10/9 - 26.2 miles (3:04:57 - Chicago marathon, 7:03 pace)
    10/13 - 4 miles
    10/15 - 6 miles
    10/17 - 12 miles
    10/18 - 5 miles
    10/20 - 8 miles
    10/21 - 6 miles
    10/22 - 15 miles
    10/23 - 6 miles
    10/25 - 4 miles

    Total: 120 miles
    Goal: 140 miles
    Remaining: 20 miles

    2016 Race Schedule:
    Disney Marathon - Jan 6 - 3:29:09
    Gasparilla 15K - Feb 20 - 1:01:59
    Ironman 70.3 Florida - Apr 10 - 5:07:51
    Pittsburgh Marathon - May 1 - 3:08:25
    Ironman 70.3 Augusta - Sep 25 - 4:43:56
    Chicago Marathon - Oct 9 - 3:04:57
    Ironman Florida - Nov 5
    Rock 'n Roll Las Vegas 10K - Nov 13

@mobycarp - I think your coach is insane. I tend to air on the side of caution (and just avoid fast paced running when I'm not 100%), but if Boston is your A race for next year, absolutely no reason to risk making a full recovery with a cross-country meet in another 6 weeks as the upside (of pushing you further up the fitness/performance curve if you stay healthy) doesn't seem to offset the risks.

Yes, I know I won't be in the top 25 for my age group when I make it to Boston (as hopefully my BQ-10 will be good enough for 2018), but I'd much rather take on a less intense training & recovery schedule with much more cardio base building at MP+2 minutes, which will help me finish marathons in the top 5% of my age group, than take on a training plan that keeps me on the edge of an injury so I can finish in the top 1% of my age group. As a fellow retiree, I get way too much personal satisfaction for my daily runs, rides, swims, etc. and not being able to enjoy them due to being on the sidelines would be much more devastating than occasionally missing a BQ or finishing off the podium at mid-sized races.

First truly chilly run this morning! The cars had frost on them and a significant exhale fogged up my headlamp. There was no breeze though, so it was a pleasantly crisp kind of cold, not a chill-you-to-your-bones cold. Can we keep THIS instead of the blustery kind of cold weather is sure to come??

Lots of poop talk! When I run my normal early run during the week, I can always run back by the house to stop. But it only happens once in awhile. When I do long runs outside of the neighborhood I know where there are bathrooms to go to and have had to stop a few times. But the last HM I did I took 2 imodium one hour before the race. That worked great. My friend, who has been a long time runner, said she always does that before an official race. The first time she told me that, I thought "NO WAY! I'm not messing up my bodily functions with that!" But I was having such issues on my long runs that I decided I would try it, just for the HM. I will probably do it again for my two HMs in February. But I certainly wouldn't do that on any regular basis. I don't like to take anything - and don't have to luckily (except thyroid meds).

    10/1 - 5.1 miles
    10.2 - 7.3 miles
    10/3 - travel/rest day
    10/4 - rest
    10/5 - 5.1
    10/6 - 5.2
    10/7 - hurricane day
    10/8 - 7.5 miles - trail running on sidewalks
    10/9 - 37 miles biking
    10/10 - 5.1 miles - perfect 65 degrees
    10/11 - 5 miles - still nice out!
    10/12 - strength training
    10/13 - 4 miles
    10/14 - strength training

13/10 3 miles- 3rd run of week and my ankle doesn't feel too bad!
19/10 3 miles - thought it was going to be 4 miles as I was feeling great but the sun came out and started beating down on me and I crumbled, my legs felt fine but my heartrate rocketed and I overheated so I just did the 3. I've told myself I'd be better to do 3 - 4 days at 3 miles instead of pushing the 4. I started out too fast anyway, but I was feeling the best in ages. A well.
    21/10 3 miles
    22/10 3 miles
23/10 3 miles - best week I've had since early June!

    Total: 110.91/70

Today's notes. Took another run on the new out and back I tried yesterday. Wind was switching from E to SE at about 6mph, which is enough for me to feel it. It also meant that I caught some headwind on bouth the outbound and inbound leg of the run. This cost me 1bpm average HR and a few more walk breaks....

....on the bright side, my average pace over the last 7 days has been only 14sec/mile slower than what I'm hoping my GMP will be this summer.

    Total miles: 6.03
    Total time: 1:03:19
    Average pace: 10:30
    Average HR: 153
    HR zone avg: 2.8

Speaking of poop...yeah, miles 4-6 were not fun, some of my walk breaks were to relieve pressure in some places....

It's to keep me in check. For example, on this morning's run (as well as last night's) there was a temptation to rush through that last mile. Knowing that I only have 13 or 14 miles per week to gun it (and I already used 6 yesterday), it enabled me to hold back and wait till Saturday.

I think I want to try what @kristinegift did on her long run, do 6 miles in the middle of my long run where I am alternating between GHMP and GMP.

That sounds very similar to Fitzgerald's Long Run with Speed play. It's also what I'll be looking at doing in a couple months.
