I've been crying (your not alone @WhatMeRunning) about my calories and not understanding why I'm eating so much. It dawned in me today, that quite possibly I need it to rehab muscles. How is anything going to get stronger on a deficit? So, I happily bought ice cream and brownie fixin's to enjoy after homemade Indian food.

This month isn't looking too good. I almost didn't come back to the group. Gluten and vacation got the better of me. Today was super slow for me (13:01 avg). I am determined to get back into the swing of workouts. 4 am wake ups are hard BUT I feel so much better when I do them & get my run in, still too hot to run later in the day.

No new running mileage updates as yesterday was a planned rest day and today was an unplanned rest day. I'm feeling under the weather but took the day off of work and have gotten a lot of rest, so hopefully tomorrow I will feel well enough to get a run in.
@Orphia Congrats on knocking a few awesome bucket list items off the list!
@lporter229 Thanks for the feedback on the Flying Pig. I've heard that it's a bit hilly from others as well, but I'm glad to know that it's mostly in the first half. I actually haven't done Columbus before because it always falls the week after Chicago, which I have run the past three years since I started running full marathons. I don't think I'm putting my name in the hat for Chicago next year though, so I'll probably end up doing Columbus.
@MNLittleFinn I'm enjoying running in 50 and 60 degree weather and am refusing to believe that it will soon be much colder. We were spoiled with a very mild winter last year, but I've heard we're not going to be so lucky this year.
@Stoshew71 The USAF marathon was actually supposed to be my first marathon, but instead it was my first DNS due to a shin stress fracture diagnosed just a week prior. I'm happy the KDM ended up being my first because I ran the USAF one the following year and it wasn't exactly the most exciting marathon. Good idea about Pittsburgh...I have a feeling it's in the fall, but I'll look into it.
@7lenny7 Thanks for the link. I use that website all the time to find races. I was sort of looking for personal recommendations though since it's kind of hard to get a feel for a race though a link. I'll have to look through some of the reviews.
@kristinegift Haha, thanks for the LOL but glad you're okay and didn't get hit by a car!
Sorry guys, I tried to catch up on all the posts I missed but I'm going to have to skim the last few pages

No soreness on today's hot afternoon recovery run, despite having biked pretty hard with my tri team this morning (including a bunch of garmin connect top 10 segments). I think my fixie bike seat is a bit high, which is what did in my left quad yesterday, as I felt like I was 100% today. As a result, I'll stay off the fixie until after the IM then play around with seat height. Just planning some easy runs, then a final longer run this weekend before my final taper week.

Dang, @WhatMeRunning, you brought some spunk back with you to these threads! I like it!!
@BeeerRunner - LOVE the picture!!!! Who gets a good picture at the finish!? None of us! Your son looks so happy, and so do you, it's just absolutely adorable! You should definitely print it and frame it. He'll be grown up in two blinks (trust us with adult children on that!)
@_nikkiwolf_ - it's so frustrating the way they change the models/versions of pants and bras so often! I always have that issue with sports bras. I have two Under Armour ones I love - but I can't find them online. They are relatively new and I bought them in a sports store that went out of business (Sports Authority). There are tons of bras on the UA website, but none seem to match the ones I love. My old favorite sports bra was a Victoria Secret sports bra - I got it when they first came out with their sports line about 3 years ago. I decided after a month that I loved it and went to buy another one and they were all gone already. I guess if we find pants/shorts/bras we love we need to just buy a bunch at once. Although who can afford to do that!
@skippygirlsmom - Skip is a trip! TOO funny! Why be miserable, just let it go!

@mobycarp - I think your coach is insane. I tend to air on the side of caution (and just avoid fast paced running when I'm not 100%), but if Boston is your A race for next year, absolutely no reason to risk making a full recovery with a cross-country meet in another 6 weeks as the upside (of pushing you further up the fitness/performance curve if you stay healthy) doesn't seem to offset the risks.
Yes, I know I won't be in the top 25 for my age group when I make it to Boston (as hopefully my BQ-10 will be good enough for 2018), but I'd much rather take on a less intense training & recovery schedule with much more cardio base building at MP+2 minutes, which will help me finish marathons in the top 5% of my age group, than take on a training plan that keeps me on the edge of an injury so I can finish in the top 1% of my age group. As a fellow retiree, I get way too much personal satisfaction for my daily runs, rides, swims, etc. and not being able to enjoy them due to being on the sidelines would be much more devastating than occasionally missing a BQ or finishing off the podium at mid-sized races.
@Ohhim - Thank you for that perspective. I'm still working on figuring out how I feel about things. The goal is definitely to finish Boston without being beat up, rather than finish in the top 25 of my age group, which I didn't manage in 2016 anyway. If I get caught up in the race and end up putting myself out of action for a couple months afterward, that will be my last marathon. Not worth it.
I certainly understand and share the personal satisfaction of daily runs, though I'm not much of a swimmer or cyclist. However, I find that not being able to run isn't nearly as stressful in retirement as it was when I was working. Go figure. Still, I want to avoid the sidelines. I suspect that will be fairly easy if I never race anything longer than a half; but I have too much pride invested to skip Boston 2017 unless I just plain can't run that far at that time.
Swirling around with the pride and commitment stuff is a feeling that I owe it to the club to run in club nationals. I've got some good training and good advice out of this club, and what they want most of all is to do well in USATF national events at all age group levels. Even if I'm not 100%, I can help the club in the Super Vet age group.
So there are competing visions of what I want to do going forward: Learn to manage a marathon. Give up marathons and live for halfs. Do the USATF national events thing. Learn cross country. De-emphasize racing, run a lot of easy, and enjoy pacing long runs for beginner half marathon trainees. I'll probably figure out what I want by observing what I end up doing.

Nominal Challenge Goal – no stated distance
Real Goal: Return to regular running
Today's notes – I started the day with an agnostic attitude toward whether it would be a running day. The morning hallway jog produced no counter-indications, but I got a good long walk in before making the decision. When I still felt like I could run at 4 PM, I went out. It was a 43° F (6° C) and overcast with a bit of wind, just the kind of chill fall weather that makes standing around uncomfortable. The psychology of a runner is such that when I put on a long sleeve tech shirt instead of a flannel shirt, I felt warm enough. Absent injury, it was another day when running 5 to 10 miles would have been pleasant.
It turns out that about a mile and a half was my range today. I went a little farther, and less than a minute longer, than yesterday; but I recognized time to quit and got myself recovered well enough to putter around the house.
Tomorrow I'll make a judgment call between a rest day and another run; if I run, Friday will definitely be a rest day.

I just realized I've been building mileage the last 4 weeks 28.2, 30.38, 32.2, 34(assuming 6 tomorrow, 4 friday and 8 sat) Looks like next week will be a cutback week, looking at 3-4-5-4-3-9 as a cutback, then my BIG Jump to start my next cycle, which will be 4 weeks total.....6-6-6-6-6-10 to get me up to my 40mpw winter mileage goal.
I'll be playing around with the mileage, and possibly adding in alternating HMP/MP segments into one of the 6 milers each week to keep things interesting, but that will be my general mileage for a while. Then in January/February, I'll start building the LR mileage out to 16, which will keep me JUST barely under the 35% mark. This is, of course, all just a general idea, but hopefully it will put me in the position to start 18 mile runs in April when the weather should be more permitting.2 -

Also, you mentioned having Raynaud's. My mother has it very badly and over the last few years, both my brother and I have begun to notice symptoms as well. Yesterday was 50F when I was running and my hands were white and completely numb. Looks like I am going to have to break out the gloves early this year. It definitely gets worse with age
@lporter229 Oh, I'm offering - no, INSISTING - that you post another photo of Stella. Must see!
I just got my handwarmers bulk order. I've been wearing gloves but my hands are still getting really cold. Sorry you have that too. Ah, getting older.
Here's my Stella, just so we're fair about it She wore a hoodie today because we had our first snowflakes. She appears to be more tolerant of wearing clothes than my last dog
OK, one more

I think I have spent more time READING the copious posts on this thread than actually getting out running.....
running for October for me has been hit and miss and more miss than anything else. I didn't run this morning because my hip and hamstring is feeling a bit twingy, and I'm off to Barcelona this weekend for a dance festival/workshop (yes, me with the Shag dancing....) so don't want to push it.
However, it will be all systems go for November, especially as I have a 12k race the first weekend!!!1 -

Today's notes: Nice cool run today, with the temp near 40. Run felt good today, I was on a little flatter of a route, so it worked my muscled differently from the more rolling hill route the last 2 days. HR was still a little higher than I would like, but Average was still in z2.
Distance: 6.04 miles
Time: 1:02:05
Avg. pace: 10:17
avg HR: 153
One note on the run. 10:17 is right around my hoped for GMP for this summer so, hopefully I can keep building miles right around where I am with pace/HR and be able to run it for 26.2 this summer.2 -
I skipped my run last night. My quads and hamstrings are still quite sore from over doing that lunge matrix Tuesday, and my son wanted to watch the season opener for the Timberwolves so I did that instead. I'll get out tonight, pain or not.

everyone is doing so well.
i got up this morning. there was lots of arguing in my head and the dog tried laying on top of me to keep me in bed, but i got a run in. 40 min of sprints and 15 of hills. it felt good. I've got a lot of work to do to get back to where i was and to get back in half marathon shape but I've got till June. I've been toying with the idea of running the full marathon.10 -

So to ease myself back into running I've decided to make October my marathon month in that I will run at least a marathon distance over the month (hopefully more, but since I'm just getting back into it I don't wanna go too crazy although my body is saying run more, run more, run more lol).
So goal: 26.2 miles
October 4 - 1.7 miles
October 5 - Rest
October 6 - Rest
October 7 - 1.75 miles
October 8 - Rest
October 9 - Ended up doing a super long walk with the dog, so didn't run but enjoyed the fall weather
October 10 - 1.75 miles
October 11 - 16 - Resting a nagging hip and foam rolling . . . not sure what I did because I didn't run that much but it hurt.
October 17 - 1.8 miles
October 18 - Rest
October 19 - Massage for my nagging hip pain . . . turns out it's actually potential tendinitis in one of the tendons connecting my knee to my hip but it's super tight, so that's why it feels like hip pain. Was told to rest . . . so . . . might not make it to 26.2, we will see
October 20 - Rest
October 21 - Rest
October 22 - 1.5 Miles
October 23 - Rest
October 24 - 1 Mile
October 25 - 1 Mile
October 26 - 1 Mile
October 27 - 1 Mile
Distance to goal: 13.7 miles
It doesn't look like I'll get there but I'm confident my tendon injury is healing just fine with proper stretching and warming up . . . so not runnerlike with proper stretching . . .

Well, since you INSIST, how can I refuse?
Your Stella is adorable. I love the little hoodie. I am not sure my Stella would tolerate it. She doesn't even take kindly to putting on a harness.
Here is a photo taken yesterday by our neighbor girl who walks her for us during the day. She loves playing in the leaves.
