Today's notes: Finally felt in the groove today! I made a conscious decision to run a flatter route today, to help me keep HR/pace/form all better, and it worked! HR for each mile: 146, 149, 148, 148. Mile 2 was a headwind, but miles 3-4 on the way back were tailwind or no wind, and I picked up the pace a little and ended up with a 10:29 average. Felt great today. Now to see how tomorrow's 6 miler goes!

@virkati - That is a big difference! It's like you took a detour! My daughter ran the Portland, OR marathon a week ago and she was convinced from the beginning something was wrong. At the mile 1 marker, her Garmin said 1.5 and it just kept getting worse. Sure enough, she found out that a lot of people ran an extra half mile in certain corrals. Here is an article about it:

    http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2016/10/some_portland_marathoners_upse.html
She sent me that and said “can you believe the race director said it’s not a big deal?! They added a half mile on the beginning!” She still loved it - it was her first.

@kristinegift - Good idea on the massage! Great race, don’t know how you did those hills!
@mnlittlefinn - Glad you were in the groove!
    @mmteixeira - beautiful picture.
@katharmonic - that is shocking news! Glad it wasn't you that discovered it. That's my fear for my early morning runs.

The little Fall break we had was short lived. Summer is back. Walked out this morning and said "WOAH".
Trash day, so I skipped the part of the road where the bear was last week.

    10/1 - 5.1 miles
    10.2 - 7.3 miles
    10/3 - travel/rest day

    10/9 - 37 miles biking
    10/10 - 5.1 miles - perfect 65 degrees

    ran two 5ks this weekend
sweetest day was a trail run and it was vicious. the hills were killer. even the seasoned runners had a rough time. but i finished
sunday i did a hot cider hustle. there were a ton of people. a lot of walkers and people who didn't race much, so there was people walking all the way across the trail and blocking traffic. sooooo that was a little frustrating. but it was flatter and i was 3 min faster that day.

It was a little bittersweet because Adam was always at the finish line to tell me how proud he was of me. but i ran with his wedding ring so i carried him with me.

I just realized that, if I am able to follow my schedule for the rest of the month, I'll have less than 100 miles to run in Nov/Dec, to make my yearly mileage goal.

@_nikkiwolf_ I have thought about seeing my doctor. I am not due in to see her for another 2.5 months though and I don't really want to make a special visit just for this. Also, I am on enough meds already and would really like to avoid any new prescriptions if possible. I think I may try some Flonase. I have used it before and seem to remember that it does a pretty good job of clearing the airways. On another note, that is one beautiful run you had on that mountain trail. I probably couldn't have resisted it either!

@katharmonic Stella is adorable. Keep working with her and she'll be doing great on that leash in no time. Scary news about the body and the creeper dude. My parents are always giving me a hard time about being out alone so much on the bike and running in the wee hours. Honestly, though, I can't just stay in the house afraid all the time. Just gotta get out there and be alert and as safe as you can while still doing the things that you love.

@Orphia I think it is better to breathe through your nose if you can. I can't at all while running outdoors though I do manage it when I am inside on the treadmill where the air is drier. I also manage when I am riding my bike - though I am not going as hard and generally keep my HR down in the fat burn zone for my bike rides. Running I am up in the cardio zone the whole time with occasional peaks.

Good run today. My husband actually got up and came with me and the dogs which was nice. It also pushed me a bit since he is faster than I am. Of course, he went out fresh and I had already ridden my bike for 9 miles. It did result in me running a bit faster than usual though. We'll see if this becomes a more regular thing.

No run yesterday. I was just too darn tired. I also didn't wake up for my run this morning. I'm kind of angry at myself for missing two runs. But I've also been having some health issues I'm a little concerned about, mostly frequent fatigue and headaches, that have been getting in the way of running. I have a vacation coming up in a couple of weeks, which can't get here any sooner. I may wind up scheduling a doctor appointment for that week just so I can get some blood work done and see if I'm off anywhere. In the meantime, I'm hoping I can get to the gym tonight or at the very least get out for a run tomorrow morning. I really don't want to stop running, but sometimes I think my body wants me to.

@_nikkiwolf_ Thanks for sharing and for the confidence boost!

I am also finding allergies to be awful right now. I don't take anything, but it turns me into a mouth breather. I need to work on my snot rockets lol because right now I would only hit myself. I always carry a tissue.

I've been really unmotivated with my running lately and I've really struggled to even get out there most days. I've decided to start again from the very beginning and follow couch to 10k. I'm hoping this is going to keep me motivated as I seem to do better when following a plan. My new target for October is to carry on the couch to 10k plan and run 3 times a week, and use my elliptical trainer 3 times a week as well. So far so good, I'm on week 2 :)

Catching up on the last few days of posts.

@katharmonic wow on the body and the flasher. When I was a teenager we were in a boat fishing on the lake I lived on and my friend pulled a dead body up on his fishing pole. True story. He was a guy who was passing through town and evidently was drunk (bar across from the lake) and fell in and couldn't get out. That end of the lake had a 10 foot drop immediately as you got in. Then the flasher, my goodness!!! Stay safe.
@ereck44 great news on the health numbers! The best result of running and taking care of ourselves.
@respectthekitty wow wow wow on the gift card. I just love it!
@runrachellerun regarding paces. Pretty much everyone here is smarter than me on this topic. I'm a run with no thought kinda person. I don't check my heart rate, I don't know a tempo run from a walk, I don't read about running plans or anything. It's just not my thing. Like Kristine said I judge by how I feel while I'm running. I do have the tendency to go out fast sometimes, but usually by mile 2 I have that under control. I find that if there is no pace group for me (in a HM) I'll stroll back to mid pack and just ask people? Hey what is your pace? What's your expected time? This way I can usually find someone who will be going about the same as me. I ran a half last year when I started to chat with the 2 guys next to me, they were running together I would occasionally throw in a comment to them and they would ask me a question. Best 9 miles of my life. I didn't have to concentrate on my running I just ran. Unfortunately they slowed way down around mile 9.5 because the one gentleman was older and needed to slow down. But they helped me pace to a PR. Different things work for different people.

Seems like a lot of us are numbers/data geeks! Would love to know how many here have math/stats/engineering backgrounds???

I'll start off - my degree is in mathematics with minors in computer science, chemistry and biology. I did computer performance and capacity analytics for many years...

Bachelors in Computer Science. My regular coursework would have been 2 courses shy of a duel major in CS & Mathematics. I knew lots of people that did that. I instead went for a minor in Business. I had enough of math after my numerical analysis class & differential equations class.

Thanks you guys. It turns out the body was a suicide. She handcuffed herself to a mountain bike and rode into the lake. There was a note. It's very sad. This particular lake is extremely deep in the center and the note said she did not expect her body to ever be found. It's heartbreaking to think about. I've been in a very bad place with depression in the past and my heart goes out to people who are in so much pain as to take this step.

@RunRachelleRun as you know I just did my first HM so I"m no expert. But I agree with the idea to start very slowly if you can find someone else to run with, do it! My friend and I kept each other company and kept each other from going out way too fast. Then we were able to push and encourage each other to a faster pace later on. I thought of the first couple of miles as a warmup. I mostly ran by feel but did check my Garmin pace every once in a while to make sure it wasn't way too fast or slow. I don't look at my heartrate ever during a run.

So, I haven't posted my mileage on here since last Thursday, eek. I have been reading and keeping up though!

I had a really rough weekend. My bf of 2 years and I decided on Saturday that we finally needed to throw in the towel. It's just an all around sh***y situation because we were perfect for each other. His family however, is from another country (as is he, but they all live here now) and they (not him obviously) are extremely conservative and religious. In 2 years he never got an inch closer to even getting his parents to agree to meet me. We finally had to accept that he can't just abandon his entire family, and they will never change, and I can't live my entire life being ostracized by my SO's family. I know it'll get easier over time, but right now I'm def struggling. :'( I'm very happy to have running as one of my 'escape' options.

Since I've spent the last day and a half staying super busy to keep myself occupied, I've so far managed to:

    - Rework part of the vacation we had planned together for December so I can now obsessively plan my solo Walt Disney World trip to FINALLY see the parks/hotels decorated for Christmas! (note about me: I am a self-admitted Disney freak and Christmas freak, lol)
    - Register for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon at Disneyland in CA in May (will finally be my first time in Disneyland)
    - Plan and order my costume for this Saturday's Sleepy Hollow 10k (Belle in her blue dress from Beauty & the Beast)

Anyway, sorry for the ramble! Just helps to be able to talk it all out, and try to focus on other things

    Fall Harvest 5k – 11/13

    @garygse welcome!

    Thanks again for the welcomes!

I couldn't run on Friday due to knee pain, so after five days of rest I was finally able to get up and run again (my goal is 100 miles):

    03 - 10.84
    05 - 10.01
    10 - 10.75
    12 - 10.13
    17 - 10.05

    Current total: 51.78 miles

    Over half way there! :)
