So I am a little bummed that I didn't stick it out for another three quarters of a mile or so so I could break 70 this month, but I surpassed my 50 mile goal so I am happy about that. Was having some trouble with my left leg today. My knee was sore and the top of my foot was hurting as well. I stuck it out for 2.5 miles, but it just wasn't in the cards today. Mike was with me though which is three days in a row for him. Today is our 24th wedding anniversary so it was extra nice to have him out with me. I'll make a runner out of him yet.

@RespectTheKitty Great job on that long run. It feels so good to tackle a new distance, doesn't it?

@_nikkiwolf_ Congratulations. Great job on your first marathon. Speaking of weird things eating before a marathon, I actually have a baked potato before my last few major races including last year's RCM.

Congrats @_nikkiwolf_ on your first marathon!! I loved the recap; great details! That 4:30 pacer sounds like a nightmare though... they aren't supposed to be standing/cheering and dashing back and forth, they're supposed to lead a pack through to a 4:29-4:30 finish time! At least you had her to entertain you now and again on the course? lol

Yes, very true. But if they keep you entertained and relaxed, that is a bonus. Had a pair of pacers that I ran with at last year's RCM that were cracking jokes the whole time. And every time we come up to a spirit group (RCM has set groups on certain points on the course to provide "spirit"), our pacers encouraged us to out spirit the spirit group. hahahaha They were fun to run with which helps keep you relaxed.

So spirit groups on the RCM course would be like a marching band or a drum & bugle corps, the boy scouts had a spirit group and were handing out aid and stuff, a couple live bands playing rock music, one guy had a loud boom box playing Rocky music, and different things like that.

I had to re-read @_nikkiwolf_ 's race recap. I wasn't able to take in all of what you wrote when I was reading it late last night. Anyway, while it's great to have a pacer entertain you, they shouldn't be leaving their pack alone. RCM has a pair of pacers. So in case one has to drop back (injury, bathroom break, or some other unforeseen event) their is always a back-up pacer to stay with the group. If it's a crowded race, the first few miles will be below race pace since everyone is crowded up. A good pacer will help you make up that time slowly. In my first RCM, I had a couple of pacers that made up time too fast and the first half of the marathon was actually faster than what our average pace was supposed to be. That's not good either. These pacers are supposed to be pacing a finish time that is at least 30 minutes slower than their marathon PR, so it's no big deal for them to start out a little too fast, but for a novice, 3 minutes ahead of goal can be a huge big deal towards the end. Anyway, again congratulations on your race.

Congrats @_nikkiwolf_! Great report, and a terrific race. Way to go!

And congrats to all who hit their monthly goals. Dittos re "amazing" on some of the monthly totals!

No running for me yesterday or today. I had a very fun 6 mile outing on the trails on Saturday morning. I felt great and that pretty much made my whole weekend. My favorite close-to-home trails were a bit muddy. Fun!

    I end Oct with:

    - 45 miles logged
    - 13 of 13 scheduled runs done
    - 1 of 4 alternate cardio workouts done
    - zero of 9 strength workouts done (but I can still get one done this evening!)

I guess it's obvious where I put my emphasis, right?

@_nikkiwolf_ loved your race report and you know I read the whole thing girl! Congrats on a fantastic job! I would have had to punch the pacer in the face LOL I have to say if I was with the 4:30 pacer and she brought me in a 4:38 I would be angry, especially with all the goofing around she was doing.
    @respectthekitty great long distance run!!
congrats to everyone who made goal
    Awesome work!

Been a tad delinquent posting runs here. Ended with just shy of 109 miles this month, the fewest miles since January. I did however feel like I need a break after the marathon early in the month. I'm still way ahead of my yearly goal of 2k miles, which currently stands at 1885 miles. I'm officially getting back on the wagon in November since all of my runs the past few weeks have felt pretty good and i feel like I'm fully recovered.

@_nikkiwolf_ Awesome job on the marathon. You put in the work all summer and it paid off.

@MNLittleFinn Adding speedwork for a marathon is a bit different than a half. I was able to handle all 10x100 strides sessions & the threshold work in my plan, but the z5 stuff kicked my butt. I do feel it's important to mix up your paces, but I felt like I got the best bang for my buck on the marathon pace runs. Doing a 10 mile pace session during a 16 mile long run was a huge confidence builder. I ended up doing as much as 16 @ pace during an 18 mile run. These sessions were about once every 4 weeks. The strides were about once a week, sometimes twice. The threshold work was in the 2nd mesocycle and the vo2max in the 3rd. About 4-5 sessions of each. My personal feelings on the yasso session is you don't run hard enough to get into threshold typically on an 800, and you are not running far enough to get the benefit if you did. It's a time predictor only, and it's a long workout to do the complete session, like 10 miles. 10x800 is 5 miles, 9x400 recovery is 2.25 miles, with a 2 mile warmup and a cooldown it's a long session that really doesn't give you a lot of benefit, in my opinion at least. I think a 10 mile tempo at MP would be a better indicator and give better training results.

10/18: Body Pump and 30 minutes (7.5 miles) on Stationary Bike

10/30: 2 mile run on pavement: Hamstring felt good…just a little tight and tender on turns and hopping to avoid mud. Also did 5 miles on the Zero Runner
10:31: 3 mile very slow run: Hamstring is worst in the early morning so I took it very slow and focused on form. Not as great as previous test runs.

    Cowtown Marathon (Full) Feb 26

Happy to be running outside again, but taking it really slow. I can’t wait to be back to normal again. In the meantime it feels good to be running for real and have the wind in my hair...even if the mileage is low and I'm going slow. Temps in the upper 60’s this morning…perfect running weather!

Picked up a new pair of shoes on Saturday!! I got the Saucony Kinvara 7s. They have a 4mm drop compared to my ISO 2s that have an 8mm drop. They also feel quite a bit lighter. So far, I really like them. I also tried some Hoka Ones and Altras at the store. The Hoka Ones were way too squishy feeling. I liked the Altras, but they were such a huge difference compared to my current shoes, I didn’t want to jump right down to those. I really liked the toe box on them since I have wide feet. I’ll probably go back and buy those in about a month or so and gradually rotate them in.

I need to catch up on all the postings. We just won a new contract at work so it’s going to be super busy at work for the next several weeks.

@RunsOnEspresso Being stopped mid-race is awful. Those races aren't cheap and it's completely unfair! Sorry you had to experience that.

@MNLittleFinn I love it when race schedules and training schedules match! Yay!

@louubelle16 I don't currently have a Garmin or use Strava, so I track shoe mileage on runningahead.com, which is where I log all of my running into. It also keeps track of race PRs, can run reports, etc. I like that it isn't dependent on having a particular device.

@_nikkiwolf_ Congrats on finishing your first marathon! How exciting!!

Y'all have convinced me that 1) I need new shoes and 2) one of those pairs should be Cascadias. The Cascadias were on my list this summer when training for Ragnar Trail, but since I didn't know how much I would even like trail running, I went with a clearance pair of Reeboks. I like them, but hope to increase the trail running once my marathon is done.

As far as the challenge goes, I'm ending October 10 miles short of my goal for the month. I'm okay with that. On the plus side, I ran my fastest 5k in over a year this weekend. I'm also on track to hit 1,000 miles for my running career by the end of November AND will be on track for my highest mileage year yet. I'm pretty excited to reach these milestones.

High five to everyone who hit their October goals!

Not a bad month. I'm in a funky mood. I corrected someone yester that "I use to be a runner". I am no longer. But honestly, I know I've made leaps and bounds this month- improvement isn't over.

Thanks for all the support everyone! It's been great being able to hang out and stay semi-focused.

You'll get there again Elise. You're just on hiatus that's longer than you'd like.

Cool stuff you come across running by the tracks

In the first photo, are both figures sculptures or is the one on the right painted on the building? Very cool, interesting, and a really nice find.
