Marathon went well (3:04), but definitely kept me off the bike during the taper and recovery period.

Finally got in my team hurl and whirl ride yesterday, but luckily the fastest guy skipped the ride as he was recovering from the Ironman World Championships in Kona, and the other Kona racer was still in recovery, so the pace was a much more manageable 25-28mph. Got in an easy ride with a neighbor this afternoon. Planning something longer tomorrow, then will get in my last 120 mile training ride Wednesday before starting my taper for Ironman Florida.

    10/1 - 80 miles
    10/14 - 17 miles (team ride)
10/15 - 40 miles (slow recovery w. some threshold intervals)

    Total: 137 miles
    Goal: 400 miles
    Remaining: 263 miles

    2016 Bike Race Schedule:
    Ironman 70.3 Florida - Apr 10 - 5:07:51 (21mph 56 mile time trial bike split)
    Ironman 70.3 Augusta - Sep 25 - 4:43:56 (22.3mph 56.5 mile time trial bike split)
    Ironman Florida - Nov 5

@35dollars Great new bike! The black-and-white look is really classy.

I just rode round on the parking lot today. Finally a ride with my clip-in pedals! I bought them weeks ago (more like two month now). Right after getting them I tried practicing inside while leaning against a wall. But I just couldn't figure out how to clip in, so I thought trying them outside would be even worse.
Fortunately, it turned out that clipping in while moving is much easier! All in all, I did about 3km of start-stop clip-in clip-out exercises.
If it doesn't rain tomorrow, I might be brave enough to try them on the way to work. Although then I'll probably forget that I'm clipped and fall over the first time I have to stop, it still takes a lot of concentration to remember to turn my foot before stopping...

Thanks! :) Long distance cycling is my favourite and it does feel good to be getting back into it again. :)

    September: 371.3 km (230.7 miles) = 32 hours 20 min

All right, let's see what I can do for October. Unfortunately, I'm not off to a brilliant start ... sick again ... spent the first weekend of October sleeping. But hopefully the energy will come back quickly.
    Totals:
Oct Cycling Outside: 0 km (0 min)
    Oct Cycling Inside: 0 min
Oct Walking: 0 km (0 min)

    Oct Weightlifting: 0 min
Oct Rowing: 0 km (0 min)
Oct Time Total: 0 min = 0 hours 0 min
Oct Distance Total: 0 km = 0 miles
No cycling yet ... but soon, I hope!
    Oct 1 - sick
    Oct 2 - sick
    Oct 3 - 1.4 km walking (17 min)
    Oct 4 - 4 km walking (50 min)
    Oct 5 - 1.3 km walking (16 min)
    Oct 6 - 1.5 km walking (18 min)

Oct Distance Total: 8.2 km = 5 miles

    Oct 7 - 22.2 km (70 min) cycling

    Oct 8 - 390 km (19.5 hours) cycling

That's not a typo. That was a 600 km randonnee attempt ... but being sick so much lately meant that I haven't trained enough and just didn't have the strength to do the whole 600 km. We made it to 390 km and that was that.
    Oct 9 - 1 km (12 min) walking
    Oct 10 - 1.5 km (18 min) walking
Oct 11 - 0.5 km (6 min) walking ... at the airport on the way home

Got in a mid-distance ride mid-day today as the Florida sun and heat seemed to be making a return. Didn't fuel well in the first hour, so felt it around the 30 mile mark, but after stopping to properly refuel and rehydrate, had a good return ride back. Going to get in a rest day tomorrow as I have a long run and swim planned, but will do a quick recovery ride Tuesday before doing my final pre-ironman long ride Wednesday. After then, just planning to taper with some mid-distance rides and a few tempo/interval sessions to keep me sharp.

    10/1 - 80 miles
    10/14 - 17 miles (team ride)
10/15 - 40 miles (slow recovery w. some threshold intervals)
    10/16 - 69 miles

    Total: 207 miles
    Goal: 400 miles
    Remaining: 193 miles

    2016 Bike Race Schedule:
    Ironman 70.3 Florida - Apr 10 - 5:07:51 (21mph 56 mile time trial bike split)
    Ironman 70.3 Augusta - Sep 25 - 4:43:56 (22.3mph 56.5 mile time trial bike split)
    Ironman Florida - Nov 5

@35dollars - Understated, but nice looking new ride. Given the pannier, is that your commuter, or everyday ride?

No mileage or event goals this month - just simply to get as much riding in as possible. Short days and colder temperatures that affect my Raynaud's afflicted fingers and toes limits my opportunities.

    Sunday 2nd - 56.9 miles
Tuesday 4th - 21.8 virtual miles, intervals on eSpinning bike
    Saturday 8th - 57 miles
    Sunday 9th - 36.4 miles

    Running total = 172.1 miles.

Box Hill in Surrey has a couple of new signs which made me chuckle on the way to a new PR up Zig Zag Rd today.

About a third of the way up - "It's Only Gravity"
About half way up - "Shut Up Legs"

Tuesday - 22.4 virtual miles, "time trial" on WattBike Pro
Thursday - 21.8 virtual miles, 5 minutes interval training on WattBike Pro
Saturday - 51 miles having fun chasing some Strava PRs on long fast segments and hills.

    Highlight!
Taking 33 seconds off my best time on the very nasty Combe Lane climb. 7% average but with a 19% lung busting finish.

    Running total = 267.3 miles.

Yep, that's going to be my winter (and possibly all-year, depending how it compares to my other bike) commuter ride. And maybe going to do some CX on it (minus rack and mudguards), if I manage to translate "nice idea" into actual action. To be honest, I would have preferred something a bit brighter in colouration, but that's this years' colour scheme, so Hobson's choice.

First ride commute on it this morning, and very nearly my first crash - filtering through traffic, the car in front closed the gap I was going through, I was basically standing still, still clipped in and had nowhere to go - managed to fend myself off against the car enough to regain balance. Car driver very irate, though I couldn't tell what he was actually saying - presumably would have preferred me to crash the bike into his wing rather than have one glove touch his window?

A couple of falls due to forgetting your clipped in, and you'll be good to go after that. It happened to all of us way back when learning how to use them. B)

Good Luck with the clip ins. Unclip well before a stop. Also, the fall overs I've witnessed with people new to clipping in, including myself, is talking before a stop or fiddling with garmin before a stop...distracted stopping.

    10/13 - 21.2 miles, REB, 149.9 down, 250.1 to go
    10/15 - 12.0 miles, REB, 161.9 down, 238.1 to go
    10/16 - 12.0 miles, REB, 173.9 down, 226.1 to go
    10/17 - 12.0 miles, REB, 185.9 down, 214.1 to go

Lots of indoor riding due to weather

    Mon 17 - 26.42 miles

    MTD 246.64 / 400, YTD 2226.55 / 2500

First day on the new bike. Initial impressions:
    • The riding position is more upright, and the bars are turned up more and the brake hods set further up around the curve. Felt a bit weird (slightly top heavy) to start with, but has the effect of giving me a better view ahead, with less pressure on my neck, and with my hands naturally falling at the brake hoods - all in all, definitely positive for the winter conditions
    • The gearset - oh my god, so smooth compared to my several-year-old not-terribly-well-maintained Tiagra set. Almost silent in operation, both pedalling and doing changes. Decent range of gears (11 instead of 9) without needing the 3rd chainring that I had before
    • Road Handling - the wider tyres + the disc brakes gave me a lot more confidence on the road, and the bike felt much less twitchy in the rain. Definitely a win there. As well as that, I don't know if it's the tyres or the frame, but it seems to soak up more of the impact from the less-than-perfectly maintained roads, transmitting less of the bumping to my hands and saddle area.
    • Which brings me to the reinforced concrete medieval torture device called the saddle. Far stiffer and smaller than my previous saddle, and by the end of the ride I was definitely feeling as though my poor petite derriere had been receiving the unwanted attentions of a rambunctious rhinoceros. Against which, it definitely provided a more stable platform, and felt like I was able to transfer more power to the pedals in certain sections, without the bouncing in the saddle that sometimes kicked in previously
    All in all, very happy.
