Well, the flat tire saga continues, life got in the way and no ride for 4 days, and to have it cut short by a flat tire just sucks. There seems to be a lot of small rocks on the road for some reason. Seems road bike tires don't like small rocks. I don't know if the city hasn't swept the street for awhile or why there are so many, I know we haven't had any good hard rains for awhile that could wash them away. Anyway, I think I'll go back to my hybrid with the bigger/thicker tires for awhile. I hadn't had a flat tire for about 3 months, now I have had 3 in the last 2 weeks. Mileage goal for the month is not going to happen again. :-(

Road bike tires... My city has things called goatheads. They grow on things called puncture vines. My solution was a thorn resistant tube and a tire liner like a Mr Tuffy. I can't say I never got a flat after that but I been known to go as long as a year. That configuration is not good for racing though. Makes your wheel too heavy at the circumference. But for climbing, hey, nothing matters not even wind.

Now I am a mountain biker. I got a thing called tubeless tires. I squirt in this goo called Stan's. I ain't had a flat on those tires in, well, however long I had that bike. A year, has it been a year? I lost track.

Had a buddy visiting from up north for work, so he crashed with me on the beach and we ended up doing a nice 26 mile ride for Donuts yesterday morning up/back along the barrier islands before he needed to head off to work. Luckily, he fit my road bike, and brought shoes/helmet, so it worked out well as he rode that and I rode my tri bike. I think it was his first ride on a full carbon bike, and it definitely helped him figure out the benefits to the material which I think comes more from the dull thuds on bumps vs. hard jarring bumps on alumnium (as weight differences are minimal).

Got in my Friday AM sufferfest ride with my tri-team today. Winds were favorable (8MPH blowing SW) and the route went south, so I put up a slightly improved garmin segment record for a 6 mile stretch at 28.5mph. Still, my old garmin segment was only 2 spots below the new one, and it was done without any wind aid, so I'm not sure if I want to make the ride public and overwrite the old number (as 28.4mph w. no wind is more impressive than 28.5 w. 8mph wind). Regardless, I'm nice and sore now, but glad I got in a final hard ride leading up to my IM in a week. Just planning an easy 60 miler on Sunday, a short 36 miler Monday to reach 1000km for the month, then a 35 mile team ride Wednesday en route up to Tallahassee/Panama City for the race.

    10/1 - 80 miles
    10/14 - 17 miles (team ride)
10/15 - 40 miles (slow recovery w. some threshold intervals)
    10/16 - 69 miles

    10/25 - 37 miles
    10/26 - 33 miles
    10/27 - 26 miles
    10/28 - 26 miles

    Total: 525 miles
    Goal: 400 miles
    Remaining: Done

Still raining! Looks like rain all weekend also. Sad Face! Did a short ride on the recumbent yesterday just to get some miles in. This morning I rode longer, I also upped the resistance to 10 from 9. I didn't think I would last too long at 10, but did just fine. Ended up staying on 10 for 30 minutes!!! Go Me!

@35Dollars, Congrats on making this months goal.

@tcaley4, Sorry about the flats. I run Continental Gatorskins on my bike and they seem to be pretty good. I still get flats, though not near as often as I used to. Amazon had a special where the foldable tire was cheaper than the not-folded. Usually the foldable tire is more expensive. That might be something worth checking out. Also I use Park Tools Boot for tire rips and Park Tools patches for punctures. - Good Luck!

146km of 200km October goal done

Not going to make my goal this month - horrible weather for most of the last week. Today it was sunny, and I was really tempted to do a little evening ride, but my running training plan tells me I should rest before the race on Sunday; so the trip home/work/home will have to be enough. Would have liked to get at least to 150km. Maybe Monday?
All in all, the weather isn't going to get any nicer in November, so maybe setting my goal next month to 150km in the first place would be more realistic.

    ---

@Elise4270 Can't help you with the phone holder, sorry. I just start Strava on my phone before I leave and then stuff it in a pocket. During the ride, I use one of these little (probably super old-fashioned nowadays) bike computers that shows speed and distance - can't hatch Pokemon, I'm afraid ;-)

@bocasdelbob Congratulations on the climb segment PR! Your elevation gain for the month is impressive.

@tcaley4 Again a flat? Was it the front tire again this time? Maybe you've got something stuck in the rim, though I guess you already checked for that. In any case, I hope that was the last one for a while!

@sijomial Congrats on the Strava success, that's great! I never scored a bike one, and the only running ones I got are on due to living in an area with few Strava runners, of which fewer still run some of the more "fun" trail segments, and almost none of them are female.

I got another 2000 foot climb in today.
That puts me up to 26,100 so I have roughly 4000 to go.
I got Sunday and monday to pull that off.
    -- but --
on Oct 4 I climbed 2000 but that was before I got my Garmin.
So I don't know. I think I am going to climb 2000 on each of Sunday and monday to have it on Garmin.
Strava doesn't show the fourth as a climb. It just shows it as a 14 mile 0 climb bike ride.
Oh well. I think the weather is supposed to be good.
    Cheers.

@_nikkiwolf_ Thanks! I didn't make it out for a real ride yet. I might be wise to wait a bit longer. An inch of recovery doesn't mean I can run/ride miles, yet.

    Heh, heh, heh,
Got 1,997feet of climb this morning.
PR'd a segment. I keep thinking I am going to run out of room to PR.
I mean it is easy to PR when you first establish record keeping but you can't just keep going faster and faster.

So I gets to my starting point at the crack of dawn as usual. I like to be the first one up the hill so I get to see the wildlife before anyone scares it off. Alas, as I am getting put together a Jeep goes by.

But still at about minute 30 I see a deer. I like that just fine. Then at about minute 75 I see two deer right on the road in front of me. I think those guys might be habituating to me. They don't know what a mountain bike is. Maybe they think I am a cow or something. After a few moments of mutual contemplation they go bounding off.

But then at about minute 107 I see what I thought was a coyote up the road. I closed on it and yowza! Not a coyote a bobcat! I think that is the second time in my life that I ever seen one of those.

Climbing, climbing, climbing, I only got 450m (1,485feet) to go to get my Strava October climbing merit badge. Unless something weird comes up I should be able to pull that off tomorrow. Yay!

Made the mistake of trying to go out for a harder mid-distance ride yesterday, without giving my body enough recovery time from Friday's sufferfest tempo ride, and felt it about 15 miles into a planned 60 mile ride. As a result, I just turned around at the 17 mile mark, headed home into a nasty headwind, and just suffered for the last hour as my mis-adjusted rubbing front right brake and headwind slowed me all the way back home.

Ended up going for an easy 20 mile recovery ride with a neighbor after a long run this morning, and I think I'll just try for a final mid-effort 55 mile ride tomorrow to get me to the megameter mark for the month (621 miles / 1000 KM), a moderate 33 mile team ride Wednesday and just lots of rest otherwise to get my legs fresh for my full Ironman next weekend. If the winds aren't too ugly Saturday, I'll aim for 21-21.5mph, and just make sure my power stays even, and my heart rate doesn't creep up too far before my run starts. If all goes well, I'll finish the flat fast bike in 5:15, and the course in 10:15. Although a sub-10 hour ironman is a bit of a badge of honor amongst teammates (although not quite as prestigious as a Kona slot), I don't think my fitness is in a place where it'll be feasible, and for my first full Ironman, I'd rather not blow up on the run as racing a marathon when already tired really sucks.

    10/1 - 80 miles
    10/14 - 17 miles (team ride)
10/15 - 40 miles (slow recovery w. some threshold intervals)
    10/16 - 69 miles

    10/27 - 26 miles
    10/28 - 26 miles
    10/29 - 34 miles
    10/30 - 20 miles

I've really been hitting the recumbent with all the rain. I think I'm going to make it, just barely. :-)

The recumbent is starting to make a ticking sound on every stroke, I think the bearing is starting to wear out. :(

No mileage or event goals this month - just simply to get as much riding in as possible. Short days and colder temperatures that affect my Raynaud's afflicted fingers and toes limits my opportunities.

    Sunday 2nd - 56.9 miles
Tuesday 4th - 21.8 virtual miles, intervals on eSpinning bike
    Saturday 8th - 57 miles
    Sunday 9th - 36.4 miles

    Running total = 172.1 miles.

Box Hill in Surrey has a couple of new signs which made me chuckle on the way to a new PR up Zig Zag Rd today.

About a third of the way up - "It's Only Gravity"
About half way up - "Shut Up Legs"

Tuesday - 22.4 virtual miles, "time trial" on WattBike Pro
Thursday - 21.8 virtual miles, 5 minutes interval training on WattBike Pro
Saturday - 51 miles having fun chasing some Strava PRs on long fast segments and hills.

    Highlight!
Taking 33 seconds off my best time on the very nasty Combe Lane climb. 7% average but with a 19% lung busting finish.

    Running total = 267.3 miles.

Quiet cycling week this week as I was away in the Cotswolds for a few days - think I will have to return there next year with my bike as it's beautiful and the roads are so peaceful compared to my local area....

Tuesday - 21.4 virtual miles on WattBike Pro
    Sunday - 45.1 miles.

Really pleased to get my first ever Strava podium on the segment nearest to home, a few days of eating full English breakfasts must have refuelled me nicely. :)

    Running total = 333.8 miles.

Work got in the way of training/cycling this week....

Tuesday 20.9 virtual miles on eSpinning bike.
Sunday 26.5 miles just blasting round local roads before sunset (sunset @16:37 - how depressing!)

Total for the month = 381.2 miles

Got in a decent final 56 mile spin today, getting me over the megameter mark (1000km) for the 4th month in a row.

Felt pretty good on my ride, despite it getting a bit hot and facing steady side winds for much of the ride. Overall, I was able to average 20mph while staying about 8bpm below my target IM heart rate and 20 watts below my target IM power, which bodes well for the race once I'll be in aero gear, won't have to continuously stop/restart for traffic lights, and will do some pre-race shaving (as my legs have returned to chewbacca status). I'm still debating if I should get in a mid-intensity ride Wednesday en route up to the race (Saturday) or if I'd be better off getting extra rest. I'll play around in trainingpeaks to see what my fatigue number would be at for the race then either skip it, sit on the back the entire time, or go for it.

    10/1 - 80 miles
    10/14 - 17 miles
    10/15 - 40 miles
    10/16 - 69 miles

    10/29 - 34 miles

    Total: 635 miles
    Goal: 400 miles

Surprised to find that I kept pedalling, on and off, this month, between travelling - and the weather held, and hills got easier, and I still seem to be getting better at this New Thing. Next month will be the month of the indoor bike I suspect! Fog and murk outside today.
