Bike back to the shop to sort out some minor niggles. If I'd had the wit to take the lights off the bike I could have used my old bike tomorrow, but nooooo, I left them attached - so probably no more miles until Saturday or Monday. Doh!0 -
Cold ride. Did somebody say cold ride? I went out this morning at daybreak. It was like 32 - 33 degrees. Cold if you ain't working but for climbing cold is ok. Descent is a different story.
Puddles in the potholes had thin ice on them.
So I climbed like 2,200 feet in about 1 playlist plus a song. 93 maybe 95 minutes. I ain't no speed demon on my climbing track. But when I climb up it gets colder. So I think that 32 dwindles by 6 degrees near the top.
Here is a phenomena I ain't resolved. I use tubeless tires containing this sealant called Stans. My tires lost air I had to use co2 on my front. It was kind of scary. I envisioned being stuck walking in a cold place where people don't always go.
But I think that Stans freezes and doesn't seal my tires when below freezing. And I think the big deal is around the rim. I think it freezes and hardens and becomes worse at leaking then any good at sealing.
Sound plausible? Any reports of anyone else seeing this?0 -

A bit late to the party as I've been focusing on tapering for, racing, then recovering from my Ironman.
Going for another megameter this month (621 miles / 1000km) to continue the 4 month streak.
Ironman Florida went well as it was a bit windy (10mph from East), but I kept up a 21.6mph bike split for the race and still had fresh enough legs to post a 3:38 marathon that was about 33 minutes slower than my Chicago marathon from last month (generally a reasonable metric/difference). I was a bit weak in the swim, but finished in the top 100 (out of 2500 starters), so happy with the result. Finishing up my post-race recovery this week, but got back on my bike Wednesday & today for a bit of riding.

Starting to swap focus from cycling to strength training for the next few months.
At last I managed to get a proper cycle ride in this month! Just a gentle trundle in the countryside without chasing any particular time or distance, just for the pleasure of cycling in nice countryside. It seems my stupid hands and feet will tolerate temperatures of 9C comfortably, become marginal at 8C and get very cold at 7C.

I am like up to 112 riding, that ain't much, and 14,271 climbing, that's ok. I am still 10,000 short of that strava merit badge.
That strava is kind of weird when you look at it. I am always looking at elevation profiles. I mean there are guys that satisfy that climb challenge on day 1. So I go look at their climb profiles and see climbs over a hundred foot contour showing up as 1,000 in the profile. I think there might be something twisted in the unit conversions from maps in metric to strava account in feet and pounds. I just looked at the map and profile of a crit in AUS that is calculating 4,000 elevation gain. Now that crit only has like 200 foot contour in it. Granted, I can get to 4000 in 200 foot hill repeats but that ain't what they were doing.
But that ain't Strava doping eh? That is like when I forget to turn off garmin and get in the car.
I don't know. I think I wanted Strava to be more serious than it is.
But hey, I know guys that race things they call the divide trail... then use Strava as the timekeeper for that?
Well I guess it ain't like there is a huge entry fee and a cash prize. But some of those guys go to some serious trouble to get minimal. Am I missing something?1 -

After a trip to vegas to run a 10K/pace a buddy for 15 miles of a marathon, I finally got back on my bike the last 2 days for some commuting rides and went in for a fitting today, as my ironman power/wattage data showed I should have been about 15-20 minutes faster for that same effort at my race a week ago given my weight/size.
The fitting went pretty well, I now have a new position to adjust to on both my road bike and tri bike, and am looking forward to getting used to it over the next few weeks. It seems a bit low, but it allows me to apply power throughout more of the sweet part of my pedal stroke, and puts my body in a bit more aerodynamic of a position. If it works out, I should be able to shave another 10-20 minutes off my ironman 70.3/ironman bike splits and put myself in a much better position for a shot at the podium/world championship slots.

Went on my first team group hammer fest ride in the new fit position and I didn't have trouble with the pace and even ended up pulling pretty hard very late into the ride. The position still feels a bit compact but kept me drafting better.
