Please enlighten me on which chemically alerted artificial synthetic food additives are going to give me cancer.
May I see your diary?12 -

Might want to private your diary so people don't see that you eat as much "sooo many GMO, artificial synthetic food additives which ARE bad and unhealthy... and should be part of NO persons diet" foods. Unless you're logging foods that you actually make at home (congrats on having the time to make coconut oil and cheese from scratch) and just using the nearest equivalents in the database, but if you're doing that you really should use the recipe builder for more accuracy.
Chemicals alter all foods, even the "safe" and "healthy" home made stuff.16 -

You're personal opinion of others' attitudes toward "processed" foods doesn't change the facts. I'll happily continue eating as I always have. Just less of it.7 -

Is this another, "do as I say, not as I do" example? We've had a couple of these in the past week. There must have been a recent "sanctimonious Whole Foods antiGMO McDonalds is evil" convention...10 -
The point of eating everything in moderation is to avoid unhealthy food restrictions, which can lead to huge amounts of anxiety and disordered eating when taken too far- and can easily lead to social issues as food is an integral part of many social interactions.
A healthy relationship with food isn't just using food as fuel. It's enjoying the things you eat too.16 -

^ This post is just full of silly extremes.
Of course most people would not feed a young baby a cookie ( although I personally might give an older baby, say, 12 months, one) but we are assuming in our answer on MFP that we are talking about the diets of adults.
We are also assuming, unless stated otherwise, that the person doesnt have allergies or medical conditions - so, if OP had coeliac disease we probably wouldnt suggest having a small burger. Common sense.
and yes, people may well choose to spend their money at a local family store rather than Mcdonalds - but that is an ethical decision, nothing to do with nutrition - and particularly irrelevant to OP since her question is about how to do this when when she works at Mcdonalds.
Our cancer rates are higher than in the past due to one main reason - people are living longer than in the past and therefore living long enough to get cancer
and other big causes of death such as vaccine preventable diseases and antibiotic treatable infections have plummetted - thus cancer proportionately kills more people.
Of course we can control our cancer risk too - dont smoke, get skin changes checked etc - but eating processed food in moderation - No not a risk and no reason they cant be part of people's diet.
So, yes, there are those of us who bang on about all food is ok - because it is.
Of course in moderation and as part of a balanced diet and and in appropriate portion sizes

OMG the mcrib!!! Drool! Lol. I eat fast food multiple times a week. Normally it's like something grilled from chick fila or a kids meal, or a whole wheat subway, but I killed it at the gym this morning after having a light breakfast, so I could have that 540 calorie sandwich.
I hate to see people thinking stuff such as mcdonalds or any fast food is why folks are fat. Because it's not. While I am considered obese still, I'm steadily losing with takeaway in my diet. It's just too much of anything that makes us fat. If you ate 4,500 calories or organic gluten free superfood lettuce all day....you'd still be very fat an unhealthy7 -
Hmm. I think I'm going to have some McDonalds breakfast for lunch. It'll fit neatly in my deficit for today.5

Speaking of babies and cookies; I was born 3 months premature in the 80s and was in hospital for 3 months. When my mother was able to take me home, I was still quite fragile to the point where my doctor didn't think I'd make it. she fed me powdered arrowroot biscuits in warm milk to get my weight up. I don't know if your McDonald's sells salads but you could eat those with a light dressing. Their grilled chicken sandwiches are okay too. Just get a side salad instead of fries. Drink diet soda or water. There's always little tweaks that you can make that will save you hundreds of calories per day, at a fast food restaurant or at home. If you want to eat chips as a snack, count out 1 portion of chips, eat it, record it and move on. You make money at McDonald's, use some of it to get a few healthy snacks like fruits and veggies for yourself. I wish I was 5'5" and 135 pounds. I'm 5'3" and my goal weight is 130.2

The day I binged on celery was the day I decided to stop eating only "healthy food". I was only eating lean protein, fresh fruits and vegetables, ect you know "healthy" natural foods and was miserable. I was 145 bigger than I had been during either pregnancy, I began eating anything I wanted im moderation and have lost weight and feel better. Good job on losing weight!6 -

I was thinking the exact same thing. The narrative sounds awfully familiar, as does the diary full of the same things the poster is demonizing. Do we believe in reincarnation?
...and as usual in those kind of posts, it's a binary argument which completely fails to address context and dosage within the overall diet. Very restrictive and polarized mindset toward food.9 -

Well, not sure why everyone suddenly defends McDonald's so much, and why kiwiapplepear is under so much criticism and ambush. Generally, she's correct, processed foods are not so good and healthy, we should try to avoid them, if possible, for our own good, supporting small businesses in your neighborhood is wonderful especially if they work hard to bring a good change, in our food choices, for instance. Also, she pointed out some healthy changes OP can make for herself and her family, including getting involved and helping out with cooking. All good things to try. I, myself, do not eat processed foods for years, a lot of home cooked meals, relatively inexpensive, and mostly organic too. I believe it's a good approach for me ans my family, although i won't be preaching foe everyone to do the same, but i think if i can cut back the unneeded chemicals and additives out of my diet, it can only benefit me.

Just picking out a couple of the absurdities here.
"would you feed a baby processed cookies, etc."
Sure. What do you think teething biscuits/Arrowroot biscuits/animal crackers are?
You do know that it took thousands of years to develop apples from some tiny hard fruit you'd have a hard time eating if your life depended on it (and of which you would have to force down dozens to get a couple hundred calories). The apples you eat wouldn't reproduce "true" if allowed to reseed -- they have to be grafted onto other apple trees that aren't allowed to produce the apples that their own genetic heritage would produce. How is that "natural"?15 -

Nobody is defending Mcdonalds specifically - they are defending the idea that one can have healthy foods within a calorie allowance at Mcdonalds- eg salads, burgers without fries, small portions, bottled water etc
Of course one can have these things without going to Mcdonalds too and one can have a balanced diet with other things -but since OP works at Mcdonalds ,these are suggestions pertaining to her situation.
Supporting small businesses is all well and good - but irrelevant to OP's question.
and most people do not need to worry about additives and chemicals -if they have an overall balanced diet.

That lovely, whole, pure, all natural banana doesn't look anything like a wild banana either. Bananas have been genetically modified to be more palatable/edible, or we probably wouldn't be eating them at all.10 -

Yeah, pretty much every banana you buy in a grocery store grew on a tree that was genetically identical (i.e., essentially a clone) to the trees that grew all the other bananas you've ever eaten. No biodiversity in commercial bananas.
I still eat them.

The OP works at McD's & they provide free or discounted food to their employees. While supporting local businesses is great, we all have to work with the resources we have available to us. For people on a reduced income (like, say, minimum wage in America) it's not always feasible to spend money elsewhere when perfectly good free food is available. The food the OP is provided is a perfectly valid option if they can work it into their diet.11 -

I by no means eat "clean" or "healthy" by standards the people think "healthy" is. Health is more than just about eating. There are lots of people who I know eat "healthier" than I do, but yet can't lose weight nor physically look or avoid illness the same as I do.
Others components to good health revolve around: physical activity, right amount of rest, correct weight for one's frame and build, risk behavior (smoking, drugs, risky sports), genetics, mental health, and how happy one is with oneself. If anyone of those are jeopardized, then it still wouldn't matter how "healthy" one eats.

The binary argument usually projected in "clean eating" threads is that you're either stuffing your face with McDonald's and 2-pound bags of sugar all day every day, or you're eating nothing but 100% organic vegetables watered by unicorn tears and lovingly hand-harvested by fairy elves under the full moon. Complete logic fail, as there is plenty of room between the two extremes to make for a healthy, well balanced, enjoyable and sustainable diet.
2) That's an awfully sweeping statement to make about "processed foods". There are a lot of foods which are considered "processed" that are perfectly healthy, nutritious and safe to eat.22
