I love coffee. Who doesn't? Rhetorical question Lol
I like my coffee sweet. International Delights French Vanilla creamer, like a lot of it, and 3 tsp sugar. My morning coffee devours my breakfast calories. But I still need to eat breakfast which has me starving myself until dinner to save those calories.
Does anyone have any suggestions how to cut my sugar and calorie intake with my morning coffee? I can't drink it black. I've tried. I've tried coconut creamer, its Ok but watery. I like my coffee more creamy, and I can't drink other nut milk/creamer (allergy)
Am I at a loss or what? Green Tea is too much for me.

If you don't drink it black, it is not the coffee that you are craving, it is really the cream and sugar that you love. Maybe try a different brand of coffee? If you don't want to drink it black maybe you can cut the amount of the items you are adding? Maybe find another way to get caffeine each day?7

How much creamer are you using?
Often what works the best is to gradually cut back on the amounts until you find a lower-calorie option that's still yummy.
So, you currently use 2 TBSPs of creamer, take it back to 1 TBSP + 2tsps for a while, and keep lowering until it's still good, but lower calorie.
What brand of coffee are you using?

Cut back slowly. Go to 2.5 tsp of sugar and a little less creamer. Once you are accustomed to that, cut back a bit again until you have hit either a reasonable amount of calories or black coffee. Also, maybe do an extra morning workout. Tell yourself that this extra workout is so you can drink your coffee creamy. You might give up some of that cream and sugar faster that way. If not, at least you would be compensating for the calories.8

How about coffee creamer/half-half cut with milk to go further with real vanilla extract and a sugar substitute? Cut the sugar slowly by replacing it with the sugar sub.
Or a sugar free low cal version of your coffee creamer?6 -
Slowly cut down on the added extras. Lose a teaspoon of sugar for a week. Then another. Then another. The less creamer for a week etc.
When I was a teenager I would have multiple sugars in my tea and coffee, now it would make me gag. I did the above of slowly reducing. You just have to retrain your palate.6 -
Sweeteners would be my first suggestion. The 3tsps of sugar is what is ramping up the calories more than a splash of creamer (unless we are talking 50/50). Maybe swap the sugar out straight away then try to reduce the amount of creamer used.
Alternatively, enjoy your coffee exactly as you want it and increase exercise or reduce calories later in the day to account for it.6 -
Put milk in your coffee. Nearly every morning I drink 6-8 oz of Fairlife milk (2% or whole) in 24 oz of coffee. It's a good source of protein. I don't sweeten it but if you like it sweet, try a few different sweeteners like Splenda or Stevia if you don't want to spend many calories on it. Also, you can add a bit of actual vanilla extract to your coffee for flavoring.1

It means buying a gadget, but if it's the creaminess that you like you can try frothing some regular milk instead of using cream or half-and-half. A quick google search had milk frothers at $10-20. I like a little frothed milk in my tea2

Try using sugar free vanilla syrup in place of the sugar. You can use the creamer, also available in sugar free.1

IME as both a barista and consumer, frothed milk doesn't make milk creamier, just.....frothed!7 -
I used fat-free, sugar-free creamer when I was drinking a lot of coffee. Now I just use one measured tablespoon of the regular stuff. If you want a lot of sugar in it, try switching to Splenda or Equal or whichever artificial sweetener you like best.2

Sugar free creamer at 15cals per 15ml2
-
I've been adding a powdered fiber supplement to my coffee which helps me feel a little more full and it's only like 15 calories. and it doesn't effect the flavor at all.0
-
I actually use a hills cappuccino mix with milk and sweetner as a treat which is probably less calories, about 130-150 depending on milk as I use fat free, not sure what yours works out as but might give you a better sweet/creamy hit than the sugar and cream.0

Try the torani syrups.5 -

What kind of coffee do you drink...I used to put all kinds of crap in my coffee until I met my wife who was from Seattle and a coffee snob...she introduced me to really good coffee and I found that it didn't need all of that stuff. I transitioned from creamers that were packed with other things that added calories to just 1/2 and 1/2 and over time, the amount I put in decreased and I eventually just transitioned to 1% milk...now I drink it black most of the time unless my wife picks up a dark roast and then I have to cut it with a little milk...I prefer a more mellow medium roast.7 -
I simply kept cutting back. I now drink a medium roast with 1 tsp of stevia, black. I use to drink a bold but really just lost the taste to french vanilla cream , and the stevia. I kept cutting back the FVC till I got to 1 tablespoon. But now I actually enjoy it black. I'm drinking donut blend or toffee. Like anything else you get use to it and your taste buds change.0
-
Like most have said, gradually cutting back worked for me, and then I switched to a small amount of Sugar free torani syrup, and now I've just made enough room in my calories for two measured Tbsp of flavored creamer each morning with no sugar, etc.0
-
I just use skim milk and splenda.1
-
I love black coffee, But maybe try like vanilla almond milk? Get a bit of the milky sweet taste without the calories.0

I used to have such a sweet tooth for coffee. When I first started lifting, I cut my sugars to less than 40 grams per day. I could either drink my super-sweet coffee and then be limited the rest of the day, or I could stop the coffee habit and have more filling, nutritious foods. I decided on the latter. But let me tell you, I found alternatives. I always got a latte from Starbuck's, usually the in-season flavor, or an iced coffee with vanilla and cream. My alternatives? Replace cream with skim milk and get the sugar-free flavor options. They are just as good and have 0 grams of sugar (usually 0 calories as well). My daily latte was replaced with a grande Americano with steamed skim milk and 6 shots of sugar-free vanilla.0 -
Side note: You can buy the sugar-free syrups from Starbuck's online store if you like to brew your own.0
-
1 tsp. Heavy cream or a little more half and half is about 20 cal. and really lightens my coffee. I don't use sweetener (anymore, former DD "extra sugar extra light" coffee drinker here) but use a little Splenda or whatever.
I gave up sugar in my coffee years ago, cold turkey, somehow didn't miss it.2 -
I put protein powder in my coffee, with a tsp of Bailey's mudslide. The protein powder makes it creamier and I get the extra 25g of protein without the added calories of milk/almond milk.2

Also a former barista- frothed milk has a different mouth-feel than plain milk- it might get closer to that viscosity of the creamer.

I use liquid sugar free creamer and a packet of stevia in mine, sweet enough for me. Still some calories in the creamer of course, but less because it's sugar free. Stevia has carbs but no calories.0
-
I do frothed whipping cream or unfrothed heavy cream (half & half is the lightest I'll go). No sweetener. I weaned myself down off of a lot of sugar when I went low carb. Tried xylitol at first but it upset my stomach so now I just do the cream.0
-
I have to doctor my coffee big time. I use xylitol instead of sugar. It is a 1:1 exchange with sugar. I use a powdered creamer instead of liquid as I tend to use less of it for some reason. I allow for myself to have 2-3 cups per day and still have breakfast.0

I can't drink tea or coffee without milk, but i did manage to cut out the 3tsp of sugar i was adding to each cup of tea. I drink 6-7 cups a day, so that was a boatload of sugar and wasted calories. I just simply reduced the amount of sugar slowly until i was down to none, and now, even a half tsp of sugar tastes too sweet!
My recommendation would be to add some vanilla protein powder, add maybe 10-15g and a little milk then blend with a stick blender to make it smooth and frothy, then top up with boiling water. You shouldn't have to add any or much sugar at all.
I'm in Australia and the only choices we have are milk or black, we don't have creamers here.0 -
Maybe try cutting back slowly on the sugar and creamer. Example first week or two have 2tsp of sugar instead of three, and so on. When you are down to one tsp then go on onto the creamer, only having one serving of creamer and one tsp of sugar at the end.0
