    they'd discussed earlier how they should all prepare their own food because the Thing infecting them via food or drink was a possibility. a human Childs wouldn't have taken that drink.
    Mac even laughs a bit to himself right after Childs does it, because he knew.

    plus the whole scene was a bit of a foreshadowing payoff from one of Mac's earlier scenes in the movie.
    he was drinking and playing a computer chess game and the game outsmarted him, so he pours his drink into the machine and kills it. so mac's next move after the movie ends probably would've been to try and kill Childs as well i think.
