you *can* do anything i guess depending on how dedicated you are. like you could probably capture one if you really wanted.
but then it's not really ever your bat either. its really like, nature's bat, you know
What if you sneak one out of the zoo?
If I'm stealing from the zoo it'll be a penguin.
penguins are the worst though. they cheat on each other. we've been over this before don't make me post the homewrecking penguin video again.4 -
aw, i always wanted a fox bat. i feel like my lab mix and a fox bat are long lost cousins
but after reading the poor domestication rates1 -

Please get a couple of baby bats and try to domesticate them, and document it!
This conjures a hilarious and adorable image! I picture them sitting on your shoulder and then getting spooked and getting caught in your hair trying to fly away.
Would they need little bat sunglasses if you tried to change their day/night cycle?
...wow, I'm taking this way too far
I love the thought you've put into this. I'd definitely want to start with babies.
Would they have to hang on me upside down though? Maybe if I had a little branch on a necklace. Not sure about the day/night schedule yet.
Guess you'd have to wear a sweater or something for them to grip, while they hung...and be prepared for the looks...you know the random guy in town who walks around with the bird on his shoulder? That'll be you now, but slightly more eccentric!1 -
Someone just needs to invent domestic immortal cyborg bats1

I hope one day to be some kind of *that* person.
We have a patient that comes in with a parrot on his shoulder. It's my favorite work day of the year.2 -

You can have my barn bats. They’re supposed to be great at getting rid of mosquitoes but they’re slacking
ETA: not now, in summer
What if I build a small barn as like a habitat?
I believe there are actual bat houses you can put up to attract them. They really are important to the ... what’s the word? Ecosystem?
I was hoping more for a cuddly pet. The things I just want to attract around my yard are birds of prey.
you should just get a sugar glider2 -

i was actually curious and decided to google it. the first link says:
This is sad and reminds me of two occasions.
When I was about 8, my brother and I caught some frogs and kept them in a bucket. We went around the house and collected dead flies from the window sills to feed them. Went to my dad's house for the weekend and was horrified to find them dead when I came home.
And recently at work we kept a feral cat inside too long, "half domesticated" it, it was unfair and kinda cruel even tho we were trying to do a good thing.

Is a chimney more or less effective than a barn do you think?
Barns are more hygeinic for the bats but chimneys and belfreys are more intimate for cross species socialization.

I had a disturbing dream the other night, where towords the end I decided I was in my own personal purgatory.
Just now the song "Africa" came on the radio and reminded me of the dream....now I'll add to my version of purgatory the song Africa is playing on an infinite loop2 -
