My Tracker crashed between the time I left home and got out of my truck to join the Sunday running group, so best guestimate based on time, temperature and wind is 5km.
The cold weather that was forecast for Tuesday Wednesday, it arrived early.
Woke up to -15C and 8-10cm of snow ( 5F and 4in snow ), Tuesday forecast is now -26C ( -15F ) and Wednesday a balmy -30C ( -22F ). As long as the wind is not howling I know that our dedicated core group will be out for a jaunt in the dark. Actually with all the Christmas lights and decorations it rather enjoyable in the evening. Still had our core group of 5 dedicated (crazies) runners show up today. We were all a little off schedule this morning so ended up running by myself but joined the group for Coffee after. I believe we actually are a Coffee Crew with a mild running problem.

Rain stopped here in Dallas as I was contemplating bagging the run. Would love to say that I can pace perfectly, but that would be bunk! I was just running to the pace of my playlist.
Now I have to go back out to get my other 7500 walking steps for that challenge.
@BEERRUNNER Have you noticed another "local"?
Hi @alipsie19 ! I'm in Southern Oklahoma, raised in the north Dallas area. Glad you made it to the running challenge!
Just noticed @Elise4270 ! Hi @alipsie19 !! I'm Lisa and I live in DFW but on the west side of 35W. I'm running the HM in the Dallas marathon next Sunday.0 -

@greenolivetree Don't be afraid...I've lost on many a Sunday due to being a diehard Lions fan
@RunsOnEspresso Texans try hard not to laugh at everyone else's weather too1 -
Question... I will be traveling up to the burbs of Chicago this week for work. The temps look like they will drop into the teens later this week. Any recommendations about what layers are good for that weather so I don't freeze my butt off?0

1 more week until my next HM! This will be my 1st really big race. Tested out the clothes I plan to wear and a new pair of sunglasses. I was a little chilly when heading into the wind but better than being hot. Who knows what the weather will actually be like, but the current forecast looks to be a tad warmer.
Hope everyone has a great week, and looks like my Packers pulled off their 2nd win in a row.1 -

My competitive side loves a good college football matchup and I'll be cheering on my Buckeyes until the end, but it's all in good fun (win or lose a rude fan is the worst kind, IMO). I can't remember exactly where you're from but I'm guessing you're either a Clemson or Bama fan?

@BeeerRunner That is a Loaded question that is hard to give a simple answer to since we all have a different concept of what is chilly and what is cold. As a Big Dude from Northern Canada I tend to be warm/hot when others are cold/chilly.juliet3455 wrote: »The cold weather that was forecast for Tuesday Wednesday, it arrived early. I guess the answer is Layers and Arm / Pit Zip Ventilators on your coat.2 -

Nope, I'm an LSU fan living in Arkansas:-p
Got my 1.5 miles in. First mile I was thinking how am I gonna do this 28 more days?!
Question: Does wearing your watch under a jacket interfere with GPS signal? I thought the loop around the lake was always .4 but it registered as .5 today for 3 laps.1 -
12/1- 5.2 miles solo+ 0.8 miles with Stella
12/2-4.4 AM miles (last 0.7 with Stella)
12/3-11.2 miles
12/4-6.2 miles1 -
Well, by the time I got home there was at least 4-5 inches of snow on the ground, and all the roads are terrible. I'm too afraid to try running in that much wet, slippery snow. And I don't want to drive to the gym on the crappy roads. And my usual Sunday night depression is kicking in. So it looks like I'll be staying in tonight. Maybe, if I get bored out of my mind I'll dare to drive to the gym. Blah. Winter has arrived.1

Race Recap: Carman’s Women’s Half Marathon Sunday December 5 2016
Got home 10:15 pm last night; slept 5 hours; brain frazzled; feeling content.
My 5th half marathon, and first official one. Dream goal was a 2 hour 21.1 km, but with a previous PB of 2:07:02 and the warm temperatures predicted, it was a big goal.
Did it in 2:07:59.4
Met up with some online running friends beforehand – I was feeling happy, nervous, and well prepared after that.
It was about 15 C (56F) when we started at 7:30 am, and about 20 C (68F) when I finished at 9:37, though it felt much, much higher by then!
I was on track for a 2 hour HM until I passed 10 km, then I started getting slower as heat and fuelling started bugging me. I had 2 Winners gels, some jubes, a number of gulps of Endura (good stuff!) and a red snake from a random stranger during the run, which kept me going, but I was struggling trying to keep ahead of the bonk.
Had the usual brain battles after about 15 km, but I think it was around that point I passed a friend who was doing the 10 km who cheered me on and gave me the mental boost I needed to finish, and my pace picked up.
Met up with some of the online friends afterwards, and it was awesome. And on the bus home in the evening, I met a lady who’s been running for 10 years and we talked about running for 1.5 hours! Running friends are the best!
Missed you guys! I was away from home for 4 days and haven't been able to keep up with this thread. Hopefully I've kudo'd all your runs on Strava.

December Running Totals (miles)
12/1 – 8.08 warmup + speed work
12/2 – rest day
12/3 – 10.13 warmup + 5K race + easy 30 minutes
12/4 – 8.07 easy
December total to date – 26.28
Nominal Challenge Goal – 150 miles
Real Goals: Finish transition to healthy running. Use Club Nationals as a learning experience on managing air travel to a race. Build a base toward Boston training. Avoid re-injury
Today's notes – Church this morning, then lunch with my daughter. We got chatting, and it was past 3:30 before I got out to run. On the bright side, the temperature was up to 39° F (4° C) by then, and the wind was negligible. I thought I might want to run 10 miles, since I didn't have a long run yesterday; but I wasn't brave enough to commit to a 10 mile loop. Instead, I chose a shorter route with options to add or cut distance after I saw how things went. My recovering Achilles briefly mentioned it wasn't 100% about mile 4, then was quiet until mile 6 or so. I ended up running a bit over 8 miles in a bit over an hour. Stretching and recovery went well.
I've done enough injury recovery by now that this is familiar. The ache is not serious, just a warning not to overdo things. 8 miles is the longest continual run I've done since Rochester, and today was not the day to try for 10 miles. The 10 mile run will come.
If there were no races on the horizon, I'd run 5 or 6 miles tomorrow. With Club Nationals next week, I'll take tomorrow as a rest day, do the light pre-race club workout on Tuesday, run my 5 to 6 miles on Wednesday, and travel on Thursday. Then I'll go with the flow. There will be many club members who have done this before, and I'm sure Coach will have a routine for us to follow on Friday and Saturday.

@Orphia Congratulations on the first "official" half marathon! Sometimes it's hard to remember that it's not cold and wintery everywhere in the world - racing in warm weather is really tough!
@RespectTheKitty Sorry that the weather keeps you trapped inside. If you can't run, maybe you can do some nice "yoga for runners" video or some strength training at home to cheer you up?
--
I just took some photos of the "bling" from yesterdays race: I got a backpack with the race logo that can be folded down into a small packet, and a bag sponsored by a large supermarket chain filled with a sachet of sports clothes laundry detergent, a travel-sized shower gel, some pasta, dates, a chocolate bar, crackers and a bottle of water. But no medal. I should be used to that by now... Is it crazy that I'd rather get a medal than a collection of useful things?
Another thing I didn't get yesterday was a chocolate crêpe after the race - the vendor was out of chocolate flakes, can you imagine? I got a hot chocolate drink and a caramel waffle instead, but was still a little disappointed, so I made a batch of nutella filled gingerspice cookies today.
I had thought about taking the day after the race as a rest day, but considering how many of those evil cookies somehow found their way into my belly, I changed my mind. I went out for a 13.6km run in the afternoon, just in time to watch the sunset on my way home. Cookies can be very motivating

Better than nothing. Way to get out there!RunsOnEspresso wrote: »
Hot Chocolate went as I hoped. I wanted to avg 11:30. Hit just below that, despite only getting about 3 hours sleep and not wanting to go. I debated wearing my jacket. It was cool waiting so I went with it but half way through I regretted the decision. I need to remember that sometimes you have to tough out the cold, for Arizona because I'm sure you all would have laughed at us.
Congratulations on the hot chocolate run! No sleep? Ugh!
Thanks! I had some weird insomnia last night. It seems to happen once a year about this time. Usually, I just have trouble falling/staying asleep. I prefer that to the insomnia stuff.
I use to fall asleep no problem and sleep all night. I guess hormones are changing (with some aches and pains) and I can't sleep for poop now. Everything wakes me up!
We did the dallas hot chocolate last year. It was cold cold cold! I can't have too much chocolate, but it was fun!0 -

Aw come on! I like um.... I guess Notre Dame, but home team is North Texas (Alma mater).
NFL? Dang sucky chargers are the team I'll always root for, no matter how bad they are.
See you can like a horrible team! Haha! MEAN JOE GREEN!1 -
@Orphia congrats on a great time for your first official half! I am impressed with that time - especially if it was rather warm and you hadn't had a lot of sleep! What awesome progress you've made and you will get under 2 soon, I have no doubt. And how awesome to meet up with runner friends - and make new ones.
@RunsOnEspresso good job on your Hot Chocolate run. It's so hard to gauge what to wear sometimes. Layers are great, but if you can't ditch them during the run it's tough.
@_nikkiwolf_ the lack of medal is a bit disappointing, but that's some great loot from your race! I would have bummed about the chocolate crepes though, that sounds delicious! How did your cookies turn out? They sound amazing.
Date:: :::: Miles :::: Dec total (goal = 80)

Today's run was intended to be a bit longer but I was also trying to complete a stair climbing challenge. So I did my run around campus, where there are tons of stairs, and managed over 600 during the course of my run. Which does not really mesh well with consistent pace or wanting to run longer. So I quit at 6 miles, conveniently at Starbucks. My quads and glutes are going to be feeling this one.
And that gives me 20 miles for the week, which was my minimum goal. I hear snow is on it's way this week - we'll see how it pans out!5 -

Date Km Today - Km for Dec.
12/1 6.17 - 6.17
12/4 5.77 - 11.94

Goal 75 km
Since I wasn't feeling well and knew I would have to run though high winds if I ran outside, I wimped out and ran on the treadmill today. I'm able to run for an hour with just a 1 minute walking break on the treadmill now. I need about 5 or 6 walking breaks and my heart rate goes through the roof when I run outside.
Congratulations to everyone who raced this weekend, I loved reading about your race experiences.
Upcoming Races:
Resolution Run 5km - 12/31
Polar Hero 5km OCR? - 2/4

Ok... I still haven't figured out my winter/spring marathon plan for 2017, but I'll commit to 180 this month as I need to ramp things back up and am having trouble finding motivation to get out for runs otherwise. Leaning towards Austin, but may do Ft. Lauderdale A1A instead (both are the weekend of February 19th).
Ended up signing up at the lastminute for a mid-sized (110 runner) holiday 5K that was earlier today for the sake of the post-race dinner (Chase the Dreidel 5K - as they served potato pancakes & jelly donuts after). I finished in 2nd place last year, and figured I'd have a shot at winning as I'm in better shape now but really haven't oriented my training around 5Ks. Shaved 1:13 off last year's time, and won the race by 30 seconds with a time of 18:13. The course measured at 2.98 miles on my garmin, so I'm a bit skeptical if it was a true 5K time, but given it was over 80 degrees, sunny, and humid at the start, I'll call it a PR for now.
12/2 - 7 miles
12/3 - 5 miles
12/4 - 4 miles (warmup + 5K race)
Total: 16 miles
Goal: 180 miles
Remaining: 164 miles
2016 Race Schedule:
Disney Marathon - Jan 6 - 3:29:09
Gasparilla 15K - Feb 20 - 1:01:59
Ironman 70.3 Florida - Apr 10 - 5:07:51
Pittsburgh Marathon - May 1 - 3:08:25
Ironman 70.3 Augusta - Sep 25 - 4:43:56
Chicago Marathon - Oct 9 - 3:04:57
Ironman Florida - Nov 5 - 10:21:27 (3:38:20 marathon time)
Rock 'n Roll Las Vegas 10K - Nov 12 - 41:37 (easy run - there to pace a friend for marathon)
Chase the Dreidel 5K - Dec 4 - 18:132 -

Haha! I'm in Plano once a week (PT)! Ft Worth is good for pancakes, and races!
There's the A2A here in March. The 5k is hilly, there a half, 20 miles just for kicks, and a full. Not much else worth the drive! Well maybe Windstar for concerts.1 -

I'm kinda dreading getting out at 30F in the morning for 1 mile to keep the streak going. I haven't ran early before work in a long time. But tomorrow morning is the only chance I'll have. Tuesday I can run after work. Wednesday I'll have to go early again. Anyway, I figured I'll get started with some exercise inside first and when I'm nice and warm, run out and just knock out a mile. I can do this..... I have to do this!2
