So you know how the Pam cooking spray says it's zero calories? That's for 1/4 second and 0.25g, which rounds down to zero.
This is not what happens in my house.
In my house, actual use means I cover a 10inch nonstick pan with a thin layer.
I put it on my food scale, and it measured 3 grams.
Pam is made of a mix of oils, but the number one ingredient is Canola oil, so I just went with that.
3g of canola oil = 26 calories.
Every calorie counts!! Measure EVERYTHING!
Can you think of other examples like this?

No, these r irrelevant in my logging. Anything less than 73 calories (Ferrero rocher) doesn't get much play in my daily log and I lose weight just fine. I'd think Youd shoot up your stress level over 26 cals why too high which impacts cortisol n weight loss way more than these 26 cals14

Don't stress so much. When you use a product like cooking spray, most of it stays in the pan. Even if you were to weigh the pan after you finished cooking you would have a hard time determining how much was the spray and how much was from the food.4

It's a slippery slope, deciding things like this don't count.
It's totally significant for me. I'm cutting 250 calories a day, and if I do this 3x a day, that's 78 calories. That's 30% of my calorie deficit. It counts.

but are you using all that pam spray??? probably not...lots is burning up unused by you...
Yes 250 is a small deficit...but it can be over come with 1k extra steps.9 -
I like this thread! I have discovered all kinds of stuff that I thought was calorie free.
My sugar free Hawaiian Punch packets are 10 calories each. I have at least 2 of these a day.
The big dill pickles are 30 calories each (I thought they were just 5)
My coffee has 3 calories per 16 ounces...how? lol

My daily vitamins are 14 calories. I track them to help me remember to take them, but I'm not losing sleep over the 14 calories. I also logged 2 sec of Pam.2

I log everything too. I like to see where I am with macros and micros. Not as worried about calories. I prefer a calorie target range.3 -
I don't worry too much about spray.. I believe there's other stuff mixed in too so I'm not sure those 3g are really oil?1

If its a problem for you, get a Ceramic coating pan? Needs 0 oil or sprays.4

Yes, it's oil, which has calories, it's good that you've recognised this, it seems that lots of people find this surprising.
You might also like to know that non stick sprays usually contain propellants that can ruin the non stick surface if your pan - if it's a good quality pan I suggest you check online and see if they say anything about it, I ruined two nice Scanpans with the stuff before I found out.

This is why I look fairly darkly at the FDA's guideline allowing anything with a 'serve' which is less than 5 calories to be rounded down to 0. When you combine that with the fact that USA labeling requirements only require the per serving information, it leads people to actually believe there are 0 calorie items - not to mention, they get entered into the database as 0 calories so no matter how many serves you add, it stays 0 in the food diary.
I am actually very grateful for Australia's labeling laws which require the info per 100g to be included on labels. It makes it very very easy to compare two different products at a glance, and it provides a clear picture of the actual calorie and macro content of the product, rather than it being skewed by listing a very small serving size.13 -

But if you eat a dozen things a day that are 72 calories that's 864 extra calories a day - and over 6,000 in a week. I can easily just take a few bites of this a nibble of that keeping it all under 73 calories and rack up hundreds of extra uncounted calories a day.13 -
I weighed my dry skillet once, then sprayed my typical spray of olive oil. The weight changed by 1 gram. Now I log 1 gram of olive oil each time I stir-fry.4

You've never seen how oily dark roasted coffee beans are? Those are the natural oils in the beans driven to the surface by the roast. Oils = fats. There is also a small amount of natural sugar in the bean.
Not much of either ends up in the brewed drink, but enough to add a calorie or two.6 -
my rule: not to log anything below 5 calories. So I do not record coffee, diet sodas, etc.
Now I try to be careful with the "obvious" stuff. Pure fats (butter, oils, etc), IMO are very easy to "forget" and add 9 calories per gram. Even doing de finest beef will take 3-5 grams of fat. Important from macro (around 10% of macro count) and 30-50 cals. If you do it 3 times a day (small salad, chicken beef, scramble egg), then you are missing a lot of info and people open posts of style "why I log everything, I do deficit but no change in weight".

How much do you still have left to lose? How big is your deficit?
When you get down to losing a few pounds of vanity weight and are cutting it close on creating a small deficit, tight logging is very, very important. Especially if you use a lot of cooking spray. Cook three or four times a day, and there's 100 calories right there. If your deficit is 250, that adds up.
OP, I already knew about the calories in Pam, and have been logging it. I log everything.4 -
I don't concern myself with things such as cooking sprays. I figure it all evens out in the end. If I mix a recipe in a bowl that then pour it over in to a pan some food stays behind that was weighed and measure. So you are losing a few calories that were left behind (unless you lick the bowl). Same goes when you empty food out of a pot...some stays behind on the surface of the pan.
When I do muffins I spray the pan with butter flavored Pam. Whatever calories that got sprayed on is divided by 12. When the muffins are removed there is still a coating of spray covering the pan. The muffins didn't absorb the spray that landed on top.
My sanity is worth a few hidden calories. I usually try save(sometimes) the last 50-100 calories in case I have any logging problems anyways.5 -

DayQuil I typically do. The NyQuil pills don't work in the sleepy aspect, so I'm stuck gagging the syrup down.

I believe children's nyquil is the exact same dosage as adults but tastes like cherries.1 -
Clearly then I would log 12 servings of 72 calories if it went to that level DAILY. But 3 sprays of Pam is not even on my mind while logging. If it raises your cortisol levels... go ahead and don't log it.
My cortisol if much happier knowing that I've logged my 9 Cal of cinnamon and 18 Cal of Pam and 4 Cal of pepper and 18 Cal of coffee.
And that no calorie will remain unaccounted for or for that matter un-eaten without good reason!6 -

When I use the "0 calorie" cooking spray, I count one mississippi, two mississippi, and use 20 calories per second.
The package says 0 cals per serving and that a serving is 1/4 of a second. Since up to 5 cals can be rounded to 0 cals, I am assuming that one serving is 4.999 or something equally annoying. 5 × 4 = 20.
So, that is why I use 20 cals per second.

Put a cold frying pan on the scale. Repeat your experiment. I've come up with approximately 1 gram per second which would make it about 9 calories for one of my seconds. Of course each person's subjective seconds could wvary2 -

Exactly this. I log everything, even my gum as it's 5 calories per piece. It doesn't stress me out one bit to do so and takes a second to do. The more accurate my data is, the happier I am.3 -
Personally, I wouldn't use Pam, I used this:
You can put in any oil you want, just have to pump it to create pressure in the canister.3 -
Diet pop has a few calories (some more, some less depending on the pop). I think most things that claim zero calories per serving you have to calculate how many calories per container. Vitamins and things like this have some too. When I make muffins, I use the cupcake liners, saves a few calories, and clean up is a breeze.
The mister above is a good piece of equipment to have. You know what you are actually spraying on your food or in your pan.0
