Spring 2017 Dog Walking Challenge
Replies

Walking Buddies: Jen and April (Apes) - golden retriever-standard poodle mix
Weekly Goal: Hit the long trail once or twice a week plus regular walks.
How long/far did you walk this week?: Didn't catch the mileage because we just walked around the boring old neighborhood instead of the usual nature trails, but it was around 2 hours total, so going by old dog pace it was probably about 4.5-5 miles...
Successes: Short, trimmed coat kept the pup cool in these warmer temps.
Challenges: I could be taking her on more hikes, but I'm selfish and I want to go on my long trail runs, too. Can't take the dog on my runs because she's old and I don't want to kill her. I don't have the time or energy to do both all the time!

Still consistently walking Roxie for 13 minutes twice a day. She's getting her Soring groom on Tuesday!2
-
Spring groom is what I meant.
Ready to walk your dog? Let's go!1 -
Walking buddies: Wick Artoo and Rose
Weekly goal: I can't remember (I
This is probably why I'm so bad at sticking to things lol)
How far this week: about one mile a day for each dog... yesterday we did 3.12 miles had a couple of tired dogs!
Successes: We went to the vet for our annual heartworm test and they were both negative, and Wick has lost 2 pounds (and needs to lose 10 total so we are very excited about this!)
Challenges: I have been waking up late, so it's too hot to go farther than a mile- hoping to get on a better schedule this week.

Missed out on the challenge this past weekend since I was up in the mountains for my birthday weekend. I left my dog with my sister because I couldn't bring her to the place I was staying. When I came back to pick her up, the back gate was unlatched and she had gotten out. YIKES!!! (My sister was at work and didn't know she'd gotten loose.)
I thought it was the end, but after hiking around a bit, I found her a few blocks away exploring in a field. Who knows where she'd been or how long she'd been out... It looked like she was on her way back, though. She was damp, like she'd had a swim, too. So I guess my dog decided to go and do the challenge without me...Here she is all tuckered out after her big adventure:

At least once a day. About 10 miles a week. My wife takes them another 15 miles a week, I'd imagine. They would go another 25 a week if the people could manage it!3

I am SO GLAD she is okay and home safe! This is our worse nightmare. You must be so relieved, she is probably so tired! I can't tell you how happy I am that she got home safe and sound.2 -
We managed 12 miles this week!
Challenges: We saw a mama black bear and her three cubs, which freaked me out and now I'm a little nervous hiking haha
Successes: We visited another State park in the area that is HUGE and shady and SO GREEN. This place has so many places to explore, so even though it's a little further away we can't wait to go back and see all the nooks and crannies. I have a feeling that our mileage will be going up from now on!

With that dense vegetation where you are it would be hard to see bears in advance. That IS scary not knowing what's around the next bend. I like to trail run, and I could just picture myself running right into a bear on that trail in your pic. Where I live (in Southern California) the vegetation is more sparse, so you have a better view of your surroundings most of the time. I've seen bears while hiking, but only from a distance. There aren't any bears in the local area that I run, although there are mountain lions (never seen one).0 -
@jenilla1 We have been just walking the roads, since the sighting (but even these are enclosed by the dense brush, so still scary). There are also feral hogs in the area, so I have begun playing music while we walk, better safe than sorry haha!
We have lived in Oceanside, Bakersfield and Tehachapi (we travel for my husbands work) so we know Southern California pretty well! I always figure when we are there, nothing I do is going to stop a mountain lion if it wants to kill me, and there is no use looking for them, so we will just pray they don't!
(Actually my profile picture was taken in Acton CA )2 -
@jenilla1 well I don't have to worry about visibility on the road anymore, a brush fire burned it down yesterday !!!!!!!0

Oh, wow. That's pretty terrible. Hope everything turns out OK - no one hurt, etc...0 -
This is such a great idea! Uniquely, I take my cats for walk... Yes, you read that correctly. We went for a 2.4 mile walk/hike yesterday.3

Luckily it looks like they caught it before it hit any private property and there was no one hurt, just 68 acres of wilderness brush! I had no clue that happened, hiked there yesterday, came back today for our daily walk and it was all burned, and smoldering and burning still in some areas (apparently its 75% contained). They stopped it before it hit the state park too, so even though it's sad, at least it wasn't worse (their is and orchard and houses across the street, literally the fire burned the fence at the orchard and that was it!).

Welcome, cats! (My cat is too good for walks. She refuses the leash. I guess she has better things to do, like lay around in the sun..)
P.S. She's actually a small cat. Doesn't look like it here because she's all puffed up and sprawled out.2 -
Finished my challenge this week, three days of walking with my pals. I might get a walk in Saturday evening but I don't know when I will get home from work. The joys of being a nurse, working 12+ hour shifts. I don't want to complain to much because I love my job and I love having four days off per week. I will try and get pictures of my babies on next walk. Happy trails with your pals!3

Awesome nice work! I can't wait to see pictures and thank you for your service, nurses are so incredible and important!!!1 -
I'm joining today as I need some motivation to go walk my dog every day or mostly every day... What helps me is my mp3. I listen to music while my dog is smelling every tree, every fence, every strand of grass!!! I'm from Montreal, Quebec.
Walking Buddy: Tobi, a 14 y.o American Cocker Spaniel
Weekly Goal: A 20 to 30 minutes walk every day
How long/far did you walk this week?: I've walked Tobi 4 days since last Monday, First day we walked about 30 minutes. Every other day was around 20 minutes. Tobi is getting old so we can walk like we used to in the past.
Successes: Motivation is a little more important this week.
Challenges: Find a time slot that's convenient.

We've been slacking off due to my increased workload this time of year. Should be back at it in a few weeks, though.1
-
Fell into a coffee table and sliced both my hands in the glass, had to take a week off but we got back at it today with a great hike of 2 miles!

We're glad you're ok! I'm sure that was scary1

Haha thanks! It was a little freaky right after it happened because I was bleeding all over the floor but couldn't feel any of the cuts so I wasn't sure how bad it was (not horrible, only one of the cuts were even stitch worthy, and the doc even let me skip them for glue instead with some convincing). Pretty sure it scared my husband more than me though, he watched the whole thing. The funny things is I was rolling up my yoga mat when it happened! dang exercise is dangerous.
I hope your workload lightens up a little, but at least you are staying busy
