So I usually have about 1 cup of porridge with milk. I want to try and find a healthy substitute that doesn't make me feel so bloated but keeps me full. ( I eat at 6:30am and don't have lunch till 12pm) so I need my breakfast to be realistic ! Oh and I live in Honduras so food variety is limited .... any ideas for a good easy breaky ?

What about oatmeal with some fruit?
Just FYI, oatmeal is porridge. Porridge is the British / Commonwealth name for it.
OP, what about something with a bit more protein & fat to help with satiety? Some scrambled eggs on an English muffin maybe or some breakfast burritos that you can pre-make and freeze for the week might be something.5 -
So you don't want to eat the porridge because you believe it is bloating you? Or it could be the milk too right?
Either way there are zillions of breakfast ideas. I love a small potato with eggs and salsa for satiety. Yogurt and fruit is nice as well.1 -
Hmmm... I just plugged this Baleadas recipe into the tracker (note: it's using commercially prepared flour tortillas, rather than the 'do-them-yourself' recipe lower down on the page.) It seems that if you get four servings, each one would be 214 calories. That's with cotija cheese.

Drop the milk first before abandoning your porridge. Adding some brown sugar instead. The sugar and calories will probably be less than the milk. Also try having a a one egg omelet with it.
Oatmeal is a wonderful complex carb which doesn't spike your blood sugar and takes a good while to break down through the day.
It will be hard to replace especially if your calorie allowance is low.6 -
Try lowfat milk instead of full-fat, if that's what you're using.2

It depends, is the porridge is too hot? Too cold? Or juuuuust right? haha, I'm no help!26

Is it for weight loss reasons that you want to drop
It? I just added it to my diet and am wondering if it's a good idea.0 -
Go to the recipes section of the community, there are tons of posts there about what to eat for breakfast.
I generally have a PB sandwich for breakfast because I can make it real quick (read: not away for another 2hrs and my coffee). Between breakfast and coffee (a decent amount of creamer in it, so it's a snack), I don't eat lunch for 5hrs after I get to work. Snacks are sometimes necessary (ie string cheese, beef jerky, etc).
Before I got pretty sick of them I'd have a slice of toast and 2 hard boiled eggs, sometimes a frittata (freezing them isn't bad).0 -
I find oatmeal to be not filling at all and quite calorie dense. I love the stuff but don't touch it. I need about 5 servings to be happy. I'd personally choose something with more protein and less carbs.6

I don't know if you can get it, but I really like Bob's Red Mill 10-grain cereal as an alternative to oatmeal/porridge. I make it with unsweetened almond milk in the microwave. I add blackberries, Splenda and chopped walnuts to it.4

When I lived in a tropical location, my normal breakfast was:
- a big slice of papaya
- bowl of homemade yogurt with a spoon of raw muscovado mixed in (DELICIOUS!)
maybe try half porridge mixed with yogurt? Yogurt will up your protein a bit.
No excuse for you not to have fruit regularly4 -
Is there a chance that the milk is a problem for you?4

I make overnight oats with coconut milk often and it's never bothered me. I load it with fruit and some almonds on top. I also make my hot porridge with water and then spice it up with cinnamon and brown sugar or apples. Also, I often have congee/jook (rice porridge) in the mornings with an egg.1

Whole milk is fine, whoever said to switch to low fat is misinformed. Whole milk is more satisfying and the calorie difference isn't significant.
1 cup is a lot!! I usually just have half a cup. Maybe you are feeling bloated because you are eating too much? Try just eating half a cup and adding some fresh fruit.2 -
I make mine with water then add a bit of milk over it to serve. Also try traditional rolled oats instead of quick oats.1

I'd entirely agree with trying switching out the milk and adding eggs to breakfast, but I'm curious about the brown sugar recommendation - what's the rationale for that?
Everyone has a different experiance of satiety, but I'd find that deliberately/unnecessarily adding sugar would generally increase calories, whilst the meal less filling1 -

I think he means it has a distinct taste that goes well with oatmeal minimizing the need for milk so it doesn't taste bland.
ETA: I agree. Drop the milk first to see if it's causing the bloat. You may not need to give up your porridge all together if that's what's filling for you if you replace the milk with something else like some kind of nut milk (if you aren't also allergic to nuts) or plain water with brown sugar or apple pieces.2 -
Porridge is one of my favourite breakfast cereals! I mix it with water to cook then add a splash of milk to cool it, a teaspoon of honey instead of sugar and slice a banana on top.
Now I have a craving for it!!2 -

Just wanted to add that I don't find it bloats me as much when I use water. Adding a splash of semi-skimmed milk gives it a creamier texture. I log this method into my diary and it does come up to 445 cals and the carbs comes in at 72g but it's a slow release energy.0 -
Halve the amount and make it with water, and have protein with it - eggs are good. I have oatbran or porridge with water every day, but have eggs, cheese or fish too0

Echoing those saying a whole cup of oats is a huge portion, I couldn't eat that much without being absolutely stuffed to the gills!
I usually have 20-30g (I don't use cups, first I'm British so they are a bit alien and they aren't designed for solids).
But agree, try without dairy milk, it could be that. I use honey or maple syrup as my sweetener so could be a nice flavour like the brown sugar suggestion if made with water/ a less creamy milk alternative. The switch of the liquid would offset the adding of something sweet. I also add about 15g of dried fruit of some kind.1 -

Beating then adding the eggs directly in, before the oats are done cooking creams up the texture as well. It even works when making rolled oats in the microwave.
My favorite so far is two eggs, 2 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp tumeric, 1 tsp cumin.0 -

Oh yes! I love adding cinnamon.

Porridge/oatmeal is perfectly healthy food. Instead of substituting the oats, try it without milk. I get very gassy when I make it with milk and no gas at all with just water or a plant milk like almond milk.0

I hope she wasn't just a tease.
I hate those *kitten* teases that get a group engaged on a topic, and then they vanish.1 -

Well, what do you like and what keeps you full?
I like oatmeal (about .25 cup dry, not sure what that is cooked, I never measure and I'd bad at eyeballing), although I eat other foods with it too (berries, vegetables, sometimes an egg). But for me, unlike you, it doesn't make me feel bloated and I do find it filling (I eat around 6 and again around 12:30, so similar schedule).
I enjoy eggs and vegetables as my usual breakfast (sometimes an omelet, sometimes not, often with cottage cheese too). But that's what I like. What you like might be different -- just experiment and remember there's no need to eat special breakfast foods, if you like dinner leftovers, eat that.
I do agree that if you have a lactose issue it could be the milk that is making you feel bloated. Have you experimented with cutting out dairy or do you know already that you are fine with dairy?0
