Had an extremely awkward experience at the gym. I had an older lady glaring at me as I working out. I just joined the gym this week and I am gym newbie. I have no idea what her problem was but she was giving me this look like what are you doing here!

Erm... why would you assume that if she was glaring, it would be because you're not "ridiculously overweight"? Gyms are full of fit people. It's what they're for. You sure you didn't just crop dust her on the way past, or use her favourite pink dumbbells?7

Some old people are just mean...or maybe you were on her machine, who knows?3

Not only do I work out at a gym, but I work in one (I just totally sounded like an infomercial), and I see this all the time. People get mad because someone takes too long on a machine, or use their favorite treadmill. I even have a regular that will ask me to tell a new member to move, I never do, but it's amazing that he tries.
Just keep doing what you're doing, zone her glares out. Everyone deserves to gym. =D14 -

Haha no it was totally a like disgusted look. I totally don't crop dust in the gym ..... I do it at walmart !!! Then you have a whole aisle to get away. My gym is small and there is no getting away from your own bombs.7 -
Or. She could just have RBF and was staring through you not at you. I do this sometimes when I zone out, it's not deliberate or mean.
Or you're projecting because you're still uncomfortable with going to the gym.11 -

I am not uncomfortable ...it could have been resting b face. Never thought of that3 -
Don't over-think this. Most people at the gym are NOT looking at you, judging you, analyzing you - they're too busy doing THEIR workout. You do your thing - stop worrying about other people.5

Maybe you resemble someone she dislikes? They say everyone has a doppelganger somewhere. lol5
-
You never know what crawled up someone's ____. Maybe you reminded her of the chick who stole her boyfriend 60 years ago.... Maybe she thinks women your age should be at home with babies making dinner for the hubby, not at the gym....Maybe she's confused and thinks you're a reality tv star.... Maybe she just got botox and it froze her face in an unfortunate expression.
I had one the other day. I was struggling to carry a barbell from the rack to the bench and a (younger) very fit, very attractive young woman was walking toward me, totally focused on her phone. I had to stop walking and clear my throat and she still nearly hit me and stopped just inches short and muttered to me "hey, watch yourself" like I was the one doing something wrong. Moral of the story, you can't make everyone happy and some people are grouchy or having a bad day or just aren't nice people.9 -

Stare back at her with the creepiest look you can come up with. I do it with the guys, sometimes it works. Sometimes they think I'm hitting on then. It's 50/50 chance.5

She might not even be able to see as far as you lol Definitely wouldn't waste any time worrying about it.2

Or not ......1 -
Maybe she just had RBF? Or perhaps she was immersed in her workout and while her gaze might have been in your direction, she wasn't really seeing you? I generally look angry when I'm concentrating during a workout.1

There's no way we can possibly know what happened. I would just let it go and carry on.
Maybe she had a *kitten* day and you look like a coworker she hates.
Maybe her husband cheated on her with a girl that resembles you.
Maybe you had a wedgie that she didn't want to see.
Maybe she was just staring in your general direction lost in thought.
Maybe she was giving you a stink eye because she indiscriminately hates other women.
Who knows! Don't worry about it and let it go.4 -
Is it Friday agains
these threads4 -
Don't over think it! Just keep going!!
Or.... was she doing circuit training and you sat down in the middle of the circuit on her next machine.. that would do it.0 -
Why does it matter?0

You are the one making yourself uncomfortable by dwelling on this.
She may or may not have given you a look. So what? She didn't make nasty comments, dump water on you or anything really unpleasant. Maybe you actually have a less friendly expression on your face when you workout and she was thinking "WTF is her problem."
Maybe if you see her again smile and say hi.3 -
Maybe maybe she liked what you were wearing, maybe it was nothing but perhaps your own perception of what may or may not have been even happening..
What to do? nothing.1 -
What's the relevance of the 'older' in the subject and message? I would be classed as an older gym member (who has a RBF incidentally!) and am interested in why age has cropped up...... should I get paranoid about it? Was it me??? I do a lot of scrunched up faces as I can't wear my glasses in the gym and squint lots to see!4

Next time I'll blow her a kiss2

Lately, whenever I have a negative encounter with a stranger that leaves me scratching my head, I say this to them in my head: "May you be well. May you be happy. May you be free from suffering." I believe it's called a loving kindness meditation. It's from a book I'm reading. It really helps to move past situation like this because as others have said, it's hard to know what her problem was. It makes me feel better, at least.
Or if this ever happens again you can ask, "Excuse me, maam. Is there some problem I can help you with?" That's called the kill 'em with kindness. You may not like the answer, but at least you will know what the problem is.0 -
I'm an older lady. I try and keep the glares down to a minimum. As long as you wipe down the equipment after yourself I'm cool.7

inb4 we have a "some lady was making kissy faces towards me at the gym i feel violated" post7 -
I'd love to know what OP's definition of 'older lady' is. The poor woman is probably no more than 45, and was more than likely just concentrating on her workout.7
-
What does it matter that she was older? Do you think she was envious of your youth or dislikes you because you're younger? Haha, as one of the "old" people (55) at the gym, I can tell you I never even think about who is there, what they look like, or even what they are doing. Im pretty much intent on what I'm doing. This does make me wonder tho if anyone has ever thought this about me as I'm pretty sure I make "faces" when I get going....5

Is it just me that would have turned and said "Hi, I'm Suzanne. I'm new to this gym" ? Smile face1
