    Indeed

Sadly my desk job coupled with a hyper-mobile spine aren't helping and sometimes the problems just flare up. Physiotherapy was a life changer for me since I now know that most core exercises (think crunch and back extensions) are about the worst thing I can do and were just aggravating the problem. So planks it is. I plank when I can (and oddly enough, I actually like it  )

For me it's the opposite really, the back extensions, stretches arching the back backwards to compress discs back where they should be, and crunches, helped me in the long run. They were uncomfortable at first but got easier. For a while I tried sit ups and that was a mistake so I went back to crunches. I was doing something like 200 sit ups a day with a 15lb weight on my chest. Managed to screw up my back, so had to give that up. Now I just do 2 sets of 25 crunches, then 2 sets of 25 side crunches on each side before I do my planks. I do yoga for my neck and lower back (mostly stretches, press-ups/etc.) before and after my workout.

Eh. Goes to show how important the diagnosis step is for back problems. One person's salvation might be the next person's damnation.

I was also doing an insane amount of crunches and back extensions, thinking that that would strengthen my muscles and lead to less pain... Thankfully the MRI, once I finally took myself to the doctor in November, showed no structural damage (my back was going numb in some places and I sometimes lost sensation in my feet... I kinda freaked a bit). So it was all caught early enough that I only have to deal with tissue problems.

I'm in again. Still need to total up for last month, but I'll post as soon as I've done that. Although I'm pretty certain I didn't get to 60 minutes. So that'll stay my goal for the month.

    April
    01.04 0 minutes
    02.04 0 minutes

    Total: 0 minutes
    Goal: 60 minutes
    Left: 60 minutes

I'm afraid that's what April stayed at for me. My back acted up again and beyond walking there wasn't much exercise for me to do. Thankfully I nipped those problems in the bud (immediately went to the doc and got the referral for physiotherapy) so I can slowly start working out again.

Here's to more success next month.

No worries, just keep coming back and giving it a shot. Eventually you'll get it done. This challenge has made my core a brick house over the last few months which keeps my back from causing me problems. So it's a worthy effort when you can do it.

    Indeed

The word "hyper-mobile" caught my eye here. I have hypermobility all over my body. I've suffered so many strains and sprains of varying degrees over the last 6 years. A couple of times it severely impacted range of motion and I thought I'd never bounce back from it; but Physical Therapy helped me through the worst of it and I've come out so much stronger. It was a painful battle and I wanted to quit so many times, but I stuck with it and regained full range of motion and came out the other side stronger than when I started -- so it was definitely worth it in the end. I wish you the same outcome in your journey of building strength!

EDITED to add that I still strain things all the time (like straining my left pec just about a week ago), but I bounce back much quicker now!

Complete failure for this month. Back issues, and just laziness, which then lead to more back issues. So with my tail between my legs I am coming back for another month! see you there!
