You guys rock!!!
Our team has already raised over $200!
Not sure how this virtual run works, but usually with virtual runs (I've done a few) you send in some sort of evidence you've done the run to the organisers.
I'll quote the team info again for those who haven't had time to join up yet:@HonuNui
I've registered and created a team.
Our team page:
https://walk.aimatmelanoma.org/Hilo2017/mfpmonthlyrunningchallenge
Hopefully that works and people can sign up and join the team from that link.
If not, when registering, you have the option to join a team during registration.
The team is called "MFP Monthly Running Challenge".
(You can choose either the virtual or physical run when registering too.)
@WhatMeRunning I created the logo a while back, and actually have it on a running tank top. One day I might get round to setting up a page where you can order your own.
I like the idea of a shirt. I'd even have to get Alex one. "Embrace the Suck" has become his new motto.5 -
Today's 8 mile speedwork assignment was a 2 mile warm up followed by six 1/2 mile intervals at 85% to 90% HRMax with 1/4 mile recovery, and 1.5 mile cool down.
All was good through the warm up and the first interval. The second interval has a big hill that I stopped on at the top then continued. After that it became fast moving fartleks through the rest of the speedy stuff.
I haven't yet been able to last to my target of 90% HRMax, usually really starting to crap out at about 85%. I'm beginning to wonder if my estimated HRMax is too high. If so...that would really be depressing, meaning I'm not even as fast as my super slow current pace.
For now, I'll just keep trying to get there.

Well, as you (USAers) are heading out for the first official long summer weekend, I'm going to beg you to protect your skin....and I'll bore you (and implore you) to consider joining with me for a Virtual 5k on October 14, 2017 to raise awareness and money for research against Melanoma (from which, for those who don't know, my only son died on April 3rd.)7
-
@juliet3455 great story behind the username. I spent a while on a daoist forum with everyone convinced I was make sure to a misunderstand (which I deliberately didn't correct) so it happens!!
I've just got through ten pages, and sorry if I didn't read through in detail. Some good runs going on. @HonuNui I've been careful to wear plenty of sunscreen on my recent holiday, and thought of your request. Nice tat. It looks like international registration for your virtual 5k is possible so will sort it out tomorrow. Although I am looking for somewhere to travel to in around September/October.......

So a busy few days. A dance festival last weekend left me exhausted, but eventually I made it to the island of Capraia off the cost of Italy. My friends were diving (I no longer dive) so I had taken my running kit to explore the trails.
Went out mid-morning on the Wednesday (after slapping on the P20 factor 50) to aim for a trail along a Roman road to a beach. . I got a bit lost, and ended up running through a vineyard
The owners sent me on the right type and I carried on my scramble. It really WAS a scramble!!! Lots of big rocks to clamber over, I managed to run much of it but there was the occasional fear for my ankles!!
I didn't make it to the beach. I got to a point where it was too hot and I still had to make it back to meet my friends, so I gave up around half an hour from the end. Still an amazing run.5 -
Second run. Decided to wait until the afternoon for the run, as I figured being a long way from home would be better with the weather getting cooler. I headed north to try and get to the northern tip (this is a very small island!!!). There are a few signs for walkers, but the trails aren't that obvious. Plus, this being before the start of open season, no one has pushed back the plants to reveal the trail. Does anyone know when I'll be old enough not to have constant bruises and scratches on my legs?
Through an old penal colony where the prisoners concentrated on agriculture, to an abandoned lookout point. Proprioception was most definitely need as much of the time through the undergrowth I couldn't see what I was putting my feet onto!!
Dropped down towards the beach which was impossible not to get in. Has anyone noticed how running gear makes suitable temporary swimming gear??? My shoes will take a while to dry properly I think!!

So yesterday I wound up having enough time for a long run, so I set out for 8 miles. It was a gorgeous day. 76F and no humidity and mostly sunny.
8 miles was tough, especially in the last 2.5 miles. And then at right about the exact 8 mile mark I got a really odd pain in my upper abdomen. Not a side stitch. It was a definite abdominal pain and it went away when I slowed to a walk but started up again when I started running again. So at that point I had to stop.
Not sure what caused this abdominal pain, and I'm a bit discouraged that it happened. It makes me worry that I won't be able to get back up to 10 miles and longer when I start HM training. The only thing I can think of is that I didn't have much to eat that day so I probably wasn't fueled properly. I was also drinking a lot of water, stopping at all the fountains on the Path, so maybe that contributed. I don't know. Any advice is welcome.
Anyway, 14 miles over the weekend constitutes a rest day today. My right achilles is a bit tight so I will be doing some yoga and stretching today.4 -

@girlinahat Fantastic pictures; truly beautiful! But where's your hat?
As it's Memorial Day here for us folks in the US, no work meant I obviously had no need to get up early to do my regular morning run. Nor did I have the need to drive to my workplace to run it, so I plotted out a new run that took me on a trail by the local lake.
And once again, just for the OCD types out there...I did 14.99 miles. Happy Memorial Day!

Six miles through my neighborhood. Nothing much to report except my daily *kitten* about the stupid weather. I am so glad tomorrow is indoor yoga class day - air conditioned yoga. I will never understand the Bikram "hot" yoga trend. All yoga is hot yoga for me. No need to turn off the AC and make everything suckfest with the stink and heat. I get enough of that on my runs.

Okay this race HATES me. Skip and I ran the Cotton Row 10K today, they also have a 5K and 1 mile fun run. It has probably the biggest participation of any race here and if you run here you MUST do Cotton Row at least once. It also has the hill from HELL!! Seriously watch this video, the hill is at mile 3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWQUMsVmxgw
Elevation:
Anyway last year I just barely made it to mile 2 and I thought it was a fluke, no same thing this year. My legs felt like *kitten* from the start. The first 3 miles is mostly uphill long slow upgrades and then downhill for the most part after "the hill". I pretty much ran/walked - this race is the only one I've ever done this. My time was horrible 1:23.39 like 25 mins slower than my 10K PR. I finished 1713 out of I think ~1900 maybe (final results are not posted). Last year I thought the EMTs were going to have to take me to the hospital, this year I felt okay except my legs were tired. I'm not going to be too hard on myself, since being hurt I've only run 6 miles a couple of times. Oh well NEXT YEAR!!
Skip on the other hand killed her race. She finished 3rd in her AG, which as @stoshew71 can tell you is a BIG deal in this race. She was 455 overall and finally won herself a medal in this race. She PR'd at 54:04. She said she had to stop at the top of the hill because her heart was pounding so much, so she might have cracked the 54 min if she didn't.
@stoshew71 I thought I heard you yell at me, if you did thanks!!

Just a short recovery walk today. My back was stiff, not sure why. But it was a nice day and my boyfriend came with me. Too bad he's not a runner, would love to have someone to run with.5 -
Well, I'm not sure about that pain @RespectTheKitty. I was thinking a strained muscle, but that position is a bit odd. Hope it clears right up!
@skippygirlsmom - Long, slow uphill grades are my nemesis!! At least you finished! And congrats to Skip!1 -
@RespectTheKitty could the abdominal pain be gallbladder?0
-
@whatmerunning and @MNLittleFinn thank you! It really is a tough course and wants to kill me haha0
-
@RespectTheKitty - have you had this pain before or is it new - it sounded like you thought it only came on whilst running?
I find I get pain along that line (just below the ribcage) when I get IBS cramps, but I have also had it from disordered breathing (I noticed something similar after scuba diving). You said you drank lots of fluids so it may be associated with that.0 -

Ran with my husband this morning. My hip is in a lot of pain, but I'm trying a new pair of sneakers. Hoka Bondi 5s. They are so cushiony! I hope it works. I was able to pick up the pace after the first mile and my last mile was just under 9 min pace. The sun was shining and it was warm, but not terribly humid.
Have 4 miles to run tomorrow.3 -
I had a pretty good run today and unless something strange happens tomorrow I should make my goal. At one point I actually had that feeling of just not wanting to stop! It has been a while... It was a little warm again 72-73F and I think Hobbes was tired and overheating even though I was trying to stay on the dirt paths and away from the pavement. When I stopped in the bathroom he flopped on the floor and refused to get up again. I let him rest a bit before we headed slowly home. He does seem to be fine now!
@girlinahat - love the pictures and I would not be able to resist going for a swim there either!
@garygse - if I had that nearby to run, I wouldn't want to run anywhere else!
@skippygirlsmom - you did awesome on that tough course!! Next year when you are healthy and have been training for that hill you will come back and kill it! Tell Skippygirl congratulations! She looks so cute in that picture!
@HonuNui - all signed up for the virtual race but will be making mai tais and pretending I am in Hawaii with you!
I think we should plan to repost about the race every couple of weeks as a reminder to others and newbies who join here and might be interested. What do you all think?

I make a note of my time for the mileage I run to keep track of my run times, But I always plan out routes so I have at least a half mile cool down walk.
I can't even stop Runkeeper until it hits :30 or :00 seconds. I will keep walking until it happens.3
