He is generally frowned upon on these forums. He is a very good journalist though and knows how to make money in journalism. His knowledge on nutrition is amusing at best, but hey, he's making money with it so good for him.20

Frowned upon is a bit of an understatement. He's generally considered a fraud who found a way to get rich through food scaring.20

Believe or it not, that is my "civil" reply to the topic. My actual thoughts would give too many *kitten*'s to be legible.11 -
Taubes is a pseudoscientific fraud with no actual training/education whatsoever in any subject even remotely related to health or nutrition. He's a snake oil peddler who sells books based upon junk science, woo and fearmongering. And that's being as nice about it as I can possibly be.22

I'm a fan. Lean-meat-healthy-whole-grains was a doozy to overcome but his Good Calories Bad Calories was instrumental for me in that regard. I think he's done a world of good for nutrition science.0

how has he done a world of good for nutrition science when he knows squat about it? thats like getting nutrition info from dan rather or any other newscaster/journalist. That would be like getting an eating plan from a podiatrist.15 -
I pretty much agree with what Anthony Colpo has to say about Taubes and his BS: http://anthonycolpo.com/the-art-of-*kitten*-part-1-gary-taubes-and-nusi/
[ETA:] The link above gets mangled by MFP's word censor. You have to substitute the slang word for male bovine excrement in place of *kitten* to get to the proper URL.5 -

By expecting it to be, you know, science. It doesn't matter whether what he personally believes is right or wrong he's had a huge impact on nutrition research for the better.0 -

He's had about as much of an impact as Dr. Oz has. And he has even less credibility than Dr. Oz (if that's possible), by virtue of the fact that he's nothing more than a journalist. He has no education or science background in nutrition and his "research" has been dismantled many times over by many people who do have training and education in the field. He himself has admitted that even if his own foundation (NuSi) found scientific evidence which contradicted his viewpoints, he wouldn't change his mind about them.13 -

science is one thing, what he spouts is not. you can get what he spouts from any magazine, doesnt make it legit, its like getting your news from the national enquirer and taking stock in it. I still want to know how he made an impact on nutrition when he knows zilch about it?6 -
Here is a peer-reviewed study led by Dr. Kevin Hall (who is a degreed physiologist and clinical researcher, as opposed to an uneducated journalist), who runs the research laboratory at the National Institute of Health, which thoroughly, systematically and scientifically dismantles Taubes' low-carb derp: http://itarget.com.br/newclients/sbgg.com.br/informativos/14-09-15/1.pdf12

I don't know, I suppose it could be argued that making wild, unsubstantiated claims which forces actual scientists to research and refute could be considered a service...12
-
Oh good grief no. He's a joke, (and yes I've read his books).4
-
He has plenty of fans, the people who follow/believe his points of views and advice like him. The people who disagree and do not follow his way of thinking hate him. Pretty much goes for every self proclaimed expert on the interwebs.2

Enjoyed reading the comments. Knew his ideas were controversial, just didn't know the extent of it in this forum.0
