You'd think so, but the official explanation says otherwise.5 -
I intend to just not use it in cases where the post I'd like to "Woo" would be interpreted as me supporting the bad idea contained within it. Instead, I'll just continue to use "Insightful" "Inspiring" or "Awesome" to support the posts that counter it.5

My first thought was:
Woo |wuː|
verb (woos, wooing, wooed) [with object]
try to gain the love of (a woman), especially with a view to marriage: he wooed her with quotes from Shakespeare.14 -
I'm just gonna use it for everything. Like Frank's Red Hot sauce.
MFP is one big woo-fest anyway. :laugh:9 -
In our nearby top tech school many programmers look like they are from China. Could woo mean something extremely positive in that country? I had to ask. Not being racist. Not at all. Maybe India? Outsourcing is also a thing. Cheap programmers in other countries.3

And yet....2 -
I miss the "agree" button. That was so handy!
I kind of like that the "woo" button has more than one meaning. Nobody knows whether you think something is woo or are cheering someone on. So everyone is right all the time!4 -
Re "it must be woo hoo since MFP is positive only" -- MFP has issued an official explanation of what it means. (This is discussed upthread.) One of the meanings is "too good to be true." I do not consider pointing out that something is too good to be true = negative, but if you do this may be distressing for you.
I also kind of enjoy that it's ambiguous. And now that WooHoo! from the start of Blur's Song 2 keeps running through my head.6 -

Woo was picked by users in a vote on the forum, nothing to do with the developers. For most of us who voted I assume that's because of the amount of broscience/scam/misinformation posts.

What the wha? :noway:7 -
A programmer or tech manager had to make the final decision. They may have not known it was negative. I wonder. UnderArmour is hurting financially. It is possible it is all outsourced. MFP would not allow a negative button. Woo-hoo is very popular where I am from.4

Then why have they said that it could refer to a more negative "something that is too good to be true" response as well as the positive "woo-hoo"in their official announcement? We use woohoo here too, but then one would assume they would use the full word, not woo, not like they need to shorten it for character length.6 -

They took a poll of users - it was one of several options. I think all the suggested reactions were vetted long before the poll started.7 -
Anyone can tell me the other suggestions? Any of the others negative?
I'm still spooked MFP would allow anything slightly negative to be here. Woo-hoo is something I use often. I have never heard woo as in woo medicine. I live in the states.2 -

You probably have never seen so many questions asking if x pill/potion/lotion/wrap/diet will magically make people lose weight/give them super fit abs either as you will on the boards here either.
I don't really see it as a negative as such, more a critical response to information posted as a reply without any scientific backup like "eating 1200 calories for 1 week will make people go into starvation mode" or "Diet Coke makes you fat"
