No, why would it be unhealthy? That people are so paranoid about sugar that they think fruit should be avoided makes me so frustrated.
IMO, fruit is great unless you eat so much you go over calories, don't get enough of other things you need (protein, sources of healthy fats), or use it as a replacement for vegetables.35 -
It's not good for me to eat a lot of fruit, but that's because of the oxalates in it since I tend to form kidney stones. I wouldn't be worried about the sugar though.3

Great source of nutrients, great taste, good for you. The sugar might not be great for your teeth, so brush well, but it's definitely healthy.4

What could be unhealthy about fruit? This is the trouble with this insane demonisation of sugar these days. It's fruit, for goodness sake, not poison.22

Fruit is an important part of a healthy diet.
There is tons of poor advice out there, especially when it comes to diet. Learn to check your sources.

Have you looked at the sources of this information? Fruit has sugar, yes. Fruit also has fibre and micronutrients. Different fruits contain different amounts of these. Eating a serving or two of fruit can certainly be part of a healthy diet, including one that is intended for weight loss. The amount of BS that is out on the webz these days is mind blowing.9

This is why I loathe all the 'sugar is evil' bunk that's the in-thing right now. Of course fruit is good for you!
edit for epic grammar catch lol7 -
I'm a diabetic, so I really do have to watch my carbs and particularly simple carbs like sugar, and I can tell you first hand that fruit is not bad for you. I don't have to guess - I have a testing machine and can see the effect on my blood sugar directly. Because whole fruits contain fiber, the uptake of carbs is slowed down and the blood sugar spike is much less than with something like soda or candy, or even bread or rice. This is consistent with research and the recommendations of the ADA. Eating fruit regularly has been found to LOWER the risk of diabetes.
I eat several pieces of fruit every day and my A1c is 4.9, which is within the normal range, without any medication other than metformin. Ordinarily I eat a piece of fruit before my morning workout to give me enough glucose to get through the workout, and then fruit plus protein (such as berries and Greek yogurt) after workouts to replenish.17 -
Limiting fruit is not a bad thing. It is not crucial to health but it can be healthful. Fruit has a lot of healthy nutrition in it.
If one wishes to limit sugar and insulin response (often a healthy thing as well) then you can easily switch to lower sugar fruits and limit sugary fruits like dates, figs, dried fruits like raisins, and tropical sugary fruits like bananas or mangos.
Or switch to veggies.10 -
If you're scared of fruit having an adverse effect always have protein with it and/or vegetables. That's what I do. Examples are raspberries with cashews or almonds. Since it's summer time I usually freeze the fruits I eat so it tastes like ice cream.3

You only have to be strict about portions if you have blood sugar problems. Which I do, but I take small portions and pair the fruit with a protein so as to keep my blood sugar from spiking. Cantaloupe is particularly low cal and so are strawberries if that is a concern.2

Fruit is very healthy. You just need to watch calories and your good. Case in point. I used to drink fruit juice with ervy meal until I started counting calories and realized how many I was drinking. Using inherently wrong with sugar unless you need to avoid it medically. The sugar it contains is all natural unlike the refined and processed junk contained in junk food.1

I split up my meals into carbs, protein and veggies. I just count fruit as carbs and don't worry about it. I am a huge advocate for fruit being healthy. Fruit gets a bad rap because it is considered a simple sugar (like table sugar) and not a complex carb (like sweet potatoes). The fiber in fruit slows down the uptake of sugar and doesn't cause as much of a blood sugar spike as say table sugar. Look up glycemic index and it will explain it better4

Can you share some of these mixed reviews? I don't know why but the concept of bad fruit reviews is making me want to laugh4

Do you have a medical reason to avoid sugar? If not then ignore the fear mongering nonsense and eat fruit if you enjoy it and it fits your calories and other goals.5

Fruit is a healthy part of a well balanced diet. Fruit has sugar...sugar isn't some evil thing...over-consumption of sugar isn't a good thing, but sugar in moderation is just fine...and I'm pretty sure most people aren't over-consuming sugar with fruit. Fruit also provides fiber and other micro-nutrients that are required for good health. They are also a great source of antioxidants. A couple servings of fruit everyday is a wonderful thing.6

I personally don´t fear fruit... But I learned since I stated using MFP that too much of everything is bad.
I use fruit as a snack... Bananas, Cantaloupes, pears and apples are my personally favorite. And if I do smoothies I use berries.
Just watch portions and enjoy because fruits are a great source of vitamins, fiber... and delicious!4 -
I really enjoy fresh raw fruit AND it's all in season currently. A whole fruit has fiber, which moderates the insulin impact of the sugar content. I often eat a few nuts or add dollop of cream or a 1/2 serving of plain yoghurt, when I am eating fruit. The added fat and protein furthers moderates the insulin impact. So, I am all for enjoying the taste of fruit and all the nutrients and digestive enzymes fruit provides...in moderation.0

Fruit sugar does not metabolize the same way as table sugar. It has many vitamins, antioxidants, fiber, and healthy nutrients that you give you energy and protect your cells. This is a MYTH that needs to be debunked!! Ofcourse Fruits are good for you!!! Animal fats and dairy is what you should stay away from or limit in your diet! Not fruits & veggies!! If you want to be healthy at least...29

I am a big believer in eating a rainbow, which is hard to do without fruit. In fact, one of the chefs at work just brought me a giant bowl of fresh fruit (I LOVE fruit, particularly in season stuff). I will eat all of it and not feel one bit of remorse. That being said, I'll eat more protein later today and try to get some leafy greens, too, to balance it all out.
Part of the reason I love it is that it is light and refreshing and the evil natural sugars give me a pleasant little energy boost. Fruit was a staple for me when I was still seriously competitively horseback riding because of all that. It was something I could eat easily on a nervous stomach. Love me some fruit!4 -
I have essentially cut them out except for raspberries occasionally because I am doing a modified keto diet (low carb low sugar). I still have veggies though. I love fruit but I have discovered how much sugar they have so I pretty much make it an occasional treat.1

Why can't we just say "yay fruit" without demonizing other foods? This does nothing but contribute to the confusion.21 -

Years ago, when I was a teenager, I visited the Central Park zoo in NYC and saw a three-year-old male lowland gorilla playing with a large truck tire, the kind from a large delivery truck. The gorilla was twisting the tire into a figure-eight and letting it go so it flew across the enclosure. And doing it again and again.
Know what he eats? Yeah...fruit.
